"The past can be a great teacher..."

M. Night Shyamalan's 2010 The Last Airbender movie was universally panned by fans and critics, to the point that many wondered if we'd ever see another attempt to adapt the property in live-action form.

Netflix took up the challenge, and based on what we've seen up until now and in this full trailer, the streamer's upcoming Avatar: The Last Airbender series seems to have done a much better job overall.

The eight-episode series is set to premiere globally on February 22, and follows Aang (Gordon Cormier) as he learns to master the four elements (Water, Earth, Fire, Air) to restore balance to a world threatened by the ruthless Fire Nation.

Per the official logline, “Alongside his newfound friends Sokka and Katara, siblings and members of the Southern Water Tribe, Aang embarks on a fantastical, action-packed quest to save the world and fight back against the fearsome onslaught of Fire Lord Ozai. But with a driven Crown Prince Zuko determined to capture them, it won’t be an easy task.”

This promo gives us our best look yet at Aang and his pals in action, and also features our first look at several supporting characters, including King Bumi, June and Jet.

Check out the brand-new trailer below, along with the recent posters and some promo stills.

Avatar: The Last Airbender also stars Kiawentiio as Katara, Ian Ousley as Sokka and Dallas Liu as Zuko. Additionally, Daniel Dae Kim stars as Fire Lord Ozai, Paul Sun-Hyung Lee as General Iroh, Casey Camp-Horinek as Gran Gran, Arden Cho as June, Maria Zhang as Suki, Sebastien Amoruso as Jet, Utkarsh Ambudkar as King Bumi and Danny Pudi as The Mechanist.

Albert Kim serves as showrunner and executive producer. Michael Goi and Jabbar Raisani direct and executive produce with Rideback’s Dan Lin and Lindsey Liberatore. Co-executive producer Roseanne Liu and Jet Wilkinson also direct.

The Avatar: The Last Airbender animated series ran on Nickelodeon for three seasons from 2005 to 2008, and was followed by four seasons of The Legend of Korra starting in 2012. There was also the M. Night Shyamalan movie we don't talk about.

Back in 2021, we learned that Nickelodeon was set to launch Avatar Studios, a new division designed to create original content spanning animated series and movies based in the world of The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra, with original creators and executive producers Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko on board as co-chief creative officers.

The first project out of the gate was said to be a new animated theatrical film, but updates have been few and far between since.

I never watched the anime, but this looks pretty bad to me... is it supposed to?

@MarkCassidy - As someone who enjoyed the animated show a lot, this looks like it might ve a good adaptation. The visuals look pretty on point. Some of the acting is a bit childish, but the first season of eje show is too and the characters mature over time.

I’d have zero faith in this if not for how good the One Piece adaptation turned out.

@MarkCassidy - I feel like it’s made with a child’s youthful exuberance but ithe anime was pretty good. Some of the visuals here look bad but I watched the trailer on mute so I can’t say about the acting

@MarkCassidy - all these Netflix adaptations look the same in this weird way that’s not good

@mountainman - One Piece really has shattered the glass ceiling for adaptations.

Hopefully Hollywood will learn from it that heavily involving the creators makes for good content. Doubt it though as they'll probably want to avoid contracts that give up that much control

@MarkCassidy - looks pretty damn good to me.
BassMan

@MarkCassidy - that is very much the backbone of the whole show, about friendship and helping one another when things get bad. That line did sound a bit cheesy, but it is very much in line with the show. Personally, it looks damn good. The interactions, characters, and action look very faithful. I’m optimistic it will be enjoyable for those who haven’t seen the original show.

@Evansly - Agreed, but maybe that is a knock against this one since the creators were originally involved and then left.

@MarkCassidy - the animated show is incredible Ror. This does look bad. Notice the bending scenes are Uber edited with quick cuts. Zuko looks entirely miscast. The CGI looks so overdone. Good on the original creators Brian Konietzo and Michael DiMartino for walking. At least they got to create their own studio and are bringing us a new Avatar series and animated film.

@BassMan - all the dialogue in this trailer is bad. Zuko looks awful and sounds worse.

@mountainman - good take and glad you mentionet the childish action and that's how the anime goes at the start and then starts to grow. I mean glad you said that, before people start yapping and nagging, lol.

@MarkCassidy - it's kinda like what @GhostDog is saying. It's just that same fantasy look every streaming show has.

Pair that with this show trying to copy the cinematography style of the animated show, and this is what you end up with. It just doesn't look original
mountainman
mountainman - 1/24/2024, 10:17 AM
@RegularPoochie - I tried rewatching the show a few years back, and felt that first season was way to childish to me. This seems to adapt it pretty accurately.

Not a popular opinion, but I actually find Kora to be superior to TLA. TLA is a somewhat formulaic savior storyline. Big bad guy needs to be defeated by the hero. It’s the traditional heroes journey. A very well done one, but it is fairly standard.

Kora has a more unique story to tell, I love seeing how the world evolved, and there a multiple incredibly compelling villains during that show. Plus it is more mature.

@mountainman - I love korra but it could have ended season 3. Season 4 was an interesting way to start a story but it just didn’t flow or land well. To me there is no moment more peak emotion than ginora(not sure how to spell it) is doing her air tornado with the other airbenders to bring zaheer down. The moment had some of the same emotional heights as zuko and azula’s final fight. Plus zaheer was such an awesome villain
mountainman
mountainman - 1/24/2024, 4:54 PM
@whoknows - Agree. Season 4 was the weakest one and Zaheer was the best villain. I am also quite partial to Amon, just based on how different he made the first season of that show feel from TLA.

GhostDog
GhostDog - 1/23/2024, 8:43 PM
It looks waaaay better than the movie adaptation but it still looks kind of eh. Something about it. All the Netflix adaptations have this same-y look. Maybe it’s unconscious bias since the creators left. And the animated revival is going to objectively be better.

@GhostDog - My gf swears by this show so i finally gave it a shot and I’m hooked. She told me Korra is mid tho so idk if i should skip it or not
GhostDog
GhostDog - 1/23/2024, 9:26 PM
@tmp3 - na watch Korra! Best villains in the whole ATLA universe. Worth it. Korra isn’t my favorite but her adversaries are fire
SheepishOne
SheepishOne - 1/23/2024, 10:29 PM
@tmp3 - Korra is great. Personally, I thought it was more interesting than TLA, but I could be biased bc I saw Korra first. Korra is also a more mature series, sort of aging with the audience of TLA.
BatmanBeenDrinking
BatmanBeenDrinking - 1/23/2024, 10:50 PM
@GhostDog - Korra is great, but it has its issues. As the other person mentioned, it has the best villains in the series, but what it lacks is structure. ATLA was vreated with the full picture in mind while korra was originally only supposed to be one season. Because of this it felt disconnected season to season until the 3rd and 4th season.

It you love the world then youll love korra and the animation is beautiful 🤩 also season 2 sucks but it has one of the best moments towards the end
GhostDog
GhostDog - 1/23/2024, 11:18 PM
@BatmanBeenDrinking - I can’t disagree with you. You feel the shaky structure as the show progresses too.
BatmanBeenDrinking
BatmanBeenDrinking - 1/23/2024, 11:45 PM
@GhostDog - I feel that only from seasons1 to 2 and 2 to 3 but 3 and 4 have a cohesive story that is set up in 3 with the fallout and plays out in season 4. They also use elements from season two. I feel like if they have taken out season 2 it would have been a better over all experience and obviously if the writers had known they were going to get greenlit for more seasons they could have connected it better
McMurdo
McMurdo - 1/23/2024, 11:58 PM
@tmp3 - korra is still good just not on the same level. Except for Korra s3 which is 100 percent on par with the original series and is incredible.

Looks decent , cautiously optimistic so far!!.

This might just be the trailer but the show does seem to be somewhat missing the charm of the original (which makes sense since the animation medium I feel added that).

The production value looks good though as does the bending imo!!.

Thankfully we aren’t atleast getting something like this it seems…
