DUNE: Here's How The Ending Of Denis Villeneuve's Sci-Fi Epic Sets Up PART 2 - SPOILERS

Dune is now playing in theaters and on HBO Max in the US, and being "Part 1" of a much larger story, the conclusion of the film is obviously left open for a direct sequel. Spoilers follow...

Though Dune has been (mostly) well-received by critics and fans alike (it currently sits at 83% on Rotten Tomatoes with a 94% audience score), the end of the movie has proved to be somewhat divisive. Even knowing that the film is "Part 1" going in, the conclusion of this first installment is being perceived as anticlimactic by some.

It's easy enough to understand why: there are no big battles, no resolutions to any major plotlines, and things are very much left up in the air for pretty much all of the surviving characters. However, the final scenes of the movie are more important than many seem to realize.

After narrowly escaping the Emperor's Sardaukar soldiers in the aftermath of a Harkonnen-planned attack that resulted in the deaths of several loved ones, Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet) and his mother Jessica (Rebecca Fergusson) find themselves at the mercy of the desert and seeking aid from the notoriously inhospitable Fremen. Stilgar (Javier Bardem) agrees to take them under his protection after being bested by Jessica, but Jamis (Babs Olusanmokun) demands that they prove themselves in combat first, and Paul agrees to face the Fremen warrior.

Jamis severely underestimates the well-trained teenager, and while Paul is reluctant to take a life, he is forced to land a killing blow. The movie ends with Paul and Jessica being accepted into the tribe and led deeper into Fremen territory where they will attempt to harness "desert power" and strike back at the Harkonnens.

Without getting too far into (potential) spoilers for Part 2, Paul choosing to kill Jamis is an event which will ultimately shape his destiny and set him on a path that leads to... well, if you've read the books you'll know what happens, but let's just say there are big hints in some of the prophetic visions we glimpse throughout the movie.

What did you guys make of the ending? Are you excited to see a sequel? Drop us a comment down below, and check out our review if you're still on the fence about seeing Dune on the big screen.

I gotta watch it again. Too many distractions going on. But from what I seen and understood it was cool. I plan on giving it another watch later.

Stunning movie. Left the Imax theater in awe with the jaw dropping imagery and amazing execution used creating this epic. Movies just aren't made like this anymore. Some will say it's slowly paced, it's not. I appreciate the desire to fully flesh out the story by giving us such a rich landscape of character development. Every actor brought something special to each character. Movies like this inspired me as a kid to draw, be creative and eventually start a career in digital art and animation.

@rcd3d - "Some will say it's slowly paced, it's not."

Sentences like these have irony written all over it.

I saw Dune 1984 with Sting and part 2 is a lot like part 1. I wasn't a fan of Dune 1984.

Rotten Tomatoes Critic Consensus 1984 had a 46% score.

This truncated adaptation of Frank Herbert's sci-fi masterwork is too dry to work as grand entertainment, but David Lynch's flair for the surreal gives it some spice.

One Critic review.

This is a film that doesn't dramatically harness the vast forces it's gesturing at, but trundles determinedly along with very little variation of tone or pace.

Technically brilliant but hollow. Paul just iant interesting enough to follow him thrpugh a "chosen one arc" yet.

Also easiest paycheck in Zendayas career lmao.

@Jeight8 - Paul was a very dull character here. The plot sort of pushes him through everything. I never found him that interesting in the books though either.

@Jeight8 - I have to agree here. I felt nothing when I left the theater other that a bit of surprise that WB allowed such a strange yet glorious film to be made. This was my most anticipated movie of the year and perhaps I built it up too much in my head but I was slightly disappointed after watching. I will be surprised if it finds an audience in the main stream. My mother in law left the theater and went home 2/3 through it because she was bored. I did like it and it is a technical masterpiece.

@Jeight8 - Paul is less active in first part and more conventional chosen one. Second part he becomes a more active hero and the books plays with chosen one expectations in interesting ways

@BlackBeltJones - chalamet has this lethargic way of acting into everything he stars. It worked for call my by your name but it doesn't work here.

Ferguson who was phenomenal here stole all their scenes together.

@MrDandy - I haven't read the books so I only judged the film. There aren't many emotional moments there for us to latch to him.

He is just there. Acting wise and writing wise I wasn't impressed.

@Jeight8 - I've never understood the hype over him. There's this stilted dullness to his acting. Like he's trying to always come off as if he's reckoning with something internally but it feels inauthentic and very boring. He clenches the jaw and expresses things so faintly.

It’s visually masterful. Not only that but the sound design and score help make it not just a film but a sensory experience.

The wide shots of the Arrakis and just the sandworm are gorgeous

That being said, the pacing TAKES A HUGE TOLL. Hard to believe it’s a whole half hour shorter than something like ENDGAME. And the script has some issues here and there. It’s very dense and at times it struggles with all that it is juggling. I really wonder how the GA will respond as at times it felt like the movie expected you to know certain things as if you were familiar with the world going in.

It's frustrating I really thought I was going to love this movie but it feels so emotionless and incomplete.
Beautiful movie but fails to tell a satisfying story in its first part, not like Deathly Hallows or Infinity War that feel complete.

@Zoldyck93 - This might be a case where you'll have to watch the movies back to back to get the wanted experience, like binging a limited series.
Also, Infinity War I can understand, but Deathly Hallows? I can barely remember the first part, which should tell you how I feel about it. But from what I remember, it didn't do much sotry-wise.

That scene on the Sardaukar planet was T E R R I F Y I N G.

Also I got a question for anyone who's familiar witht he source material. From my understanding, there are several books about the Dune universe. Are we gonna get all of it in just 2 movies? Is that even possible? Or does the story of Paul not encompass all the books?
