Denis Villeneuve's Dune is now playing in U.S. theaters and on HBO Max. The movie has been performing very well overseas up to this point and is expected to have a strong global opening weekend (domestic estimates are between $30M-$35M), but there's still a lot of uncertainly surrounding that all-important sequel.
Villeneuve has always seemed confident that he will get the opportunity to make Dune: Part 2, and previous reports have indicated that Warner Bros. gave the filmmaker certain assurances to convince him to agree to the day-and-date streaming release, meaning diminished box office returns wouldn't necessarily prohibit him from moving forward with a sequel.
Now, WarnerMedia CEO Ann Sarnoff has suggested that a follow-up may already be greenlit. “Will we have a sequel to Dune? If you watch the movie you see how it ends. I think you pretty much know the answer to that,” she told Deadline.
You might assume this stance could be subject to change if Dune greatly underperforms, but consider this: The Many Saints of Newark flopped, and Sarnoff also confirmed that talks are now underway with Sopranos creator David Chase about developing a spin-off series for HBO Max.
