DUNE: PART 2 Set To Begin Shooting On July 18; Florence Pugh And Austin Butler Officially Join Cast

Warner Bros. has officially announced that Denis Villeneuve's Dune sequel will begin filming this July, with both Florence Pugh and Austin Butler on board as Princess Irulan and Feyd-Rautha.

Recent reports indicated that Denis Villeneuve's Dune: Part 2 was set to begin shooting this summer, and Warner Bros. (via SFF Gazette) has now announced that production will kick-off in Budapest on July 18!

The studio has also confirmed that both Florence Pugh and Austin Butler have officially joined the cast. The Black Widow star is set to play Princess Irulan, while the up-and-coming Elvis actor will take on the role of the villainous Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen.

The press release included a brief synopsis, although it doesn't really tell us anything we couldn't have gleaned from the conclusion of the first film. “Part Two will focus on Paul assembling a massive army of Fremen to combat the ruthless Harkonnen, as he essentially becomes a mythical messiah figure to the inhabitants of Arrakis.”

In Frank Herbert's novel, Feyd is the nephew of Baron Harkonnen, and every bit as sadistic and cunning as his vile uncle. Sting famously portrayed the character in David Lynch's '80s adaptation. Irulan does not have a prominent part to play in the first book, but we assume her role will be expanded for Villeneuve's sequel.

Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Josh Brolin, Javier Bardem, Dave Bautista and the rest of the principal cast expected to return. Dune: Part 2 is set to hit theaters on Oct. 20, 2023

Didn't care for the first one much but it did enough for me to give the second one a go. Denis Villeneuve will always have me hooked.

Denis was the star of part I. Amazing technically & visually but the story and performances (outside of Ferguson who was amazing) didn’t grab me much. Hope everything comes together wel for 2.

Ok but when will Kevin Feige take accountability for not yet announcing BW2 with Yelena continuing her arc and teaming up with her hot milf fake mom?

Brilliant, Pugh is great casting.

Just finished reading the novel, makes me appreciate the movie even more.
In Villeneuve we trust for Part 2.

@BrainySleep -
He really did nail it hard. Didn't worry about changing things up to fit some modern image of what a movie should be, just translated as faithfully as possible to the big screen.

Pugh is absolutely perfect for that role, although small. If he manages to get to a third installment she will play a much larger role.

Only 2 things I didn’t like about part 1. I disliked that they didn’t show enough of the actual streets of arakeen and the oppressed people that the books focus so much on. A couple sweeping shots of cityscape instead of sandscapes could have done it without sacrificing anything we already had.

Second thing is the lack of the ‘brutal Harkonens’ actual brutality. Blurry cutaways of Bautista swinging a sword in the direction of people doesn’t do it, and while the hand-to-hand fight scenes were well choreographed, they didn’t illustrate the brutality of the Harkonens nor did they showcase the efficiency and ruthlessness of the Sardaukar.

Also, as an aside, there was 0 point to NOT hiding the sardaukar as Harkonens.

This felt like Dune homogenized for the GA. Too much worldbuilding was left out that could have been done through visuals and small dialogue changes. I think that DV filmed the perfect Dune adaption, or will have when all is said and done. But I also don’t think that’s what we are getting right now.

I freaking loved the first movie in all of its aspects, but oddly enough the thing I'm most looking forward to is whatever new additions Hans Zimmer is bringing to that incredible score.

@BestAtWhatIDo - Willem Defoe could be one choice. All though Charles Dance would be a real solid choice as well.

@IcePyke - I'd prefer someone closer to Leto's age, per the book. Mads Mikkelsen is a name that's been thrown about, and he'd be good, but that's kind of a safe choice. I'd go with someone more left field and impactful, like Denzel Washington (I know he's older, but not OLD old) or maybe Ralph Fiennes for a traditional choice.

Getting a big actor like Pugh for this seems to me to be more geared toward a posible Dune Messiah sequel, like Zendaya was for Dune Part 1, since all she has here is a bit part at the end.
