DUNE: PART TWO Likely To Include This Discarded Sandworm Idea; First Movie's Original Ending Revealed

Dune very nearly included a more detailed exploration of Arrakis' Sandworms, but it sounds like those "psychedelic" plans are being saved for the sequel. We also have word on the movie's original ending.

During a recent interview with Vulture (via SFFGazette.com), Dune Sound Designers Theo Green and Mark Mangini revealed that the movie originally included Sandworm larvae. Known as "Sandtrout," they were featured prominently in Frank Herbert's novel and Paul's Spice dreams in the movie were originally going to depict the Sandworms' life cycle while revealing more about how they exist on Arrakis.

"It was something that was only ever in the storyboard phase and not developed further, but we did create a few sounds for it," Green confirmed, describing this scrapped part of the movie as a "psychedelic" experience for viewers. "We had Paul seeing the sandtrout and came up with a very strange sound, like a heartbeat, like a watery heartbeat. That could be tapped into for Part Two."

"In the end, we don’t really hear them in this part, but I think we will be digging into those pieces of research when we come to part two," Mangini added. "We were giving hints in the early parts of this film that it will become something bigger in the next one."

Production Designer Patrice Vermette, meanwhile, revealed in a separate interview with the site that the story didn't always end with Paul and his mother Jessica walking with the Fremen through the desert after Paul kills Jamis. "We were initially going to go further into the story. Throughout preproduction, the script moves, it finds its place. It’s never definite until a certain time."

"So during the soft prep, there were areas of the screenplay that we did not end up covering when we locked the script and decided to shoot," he added, confirming that "there are elements already designed that will be in Part Two." This is likely a reference to Paul's arrival at the Fremen Sietch, the tribe's hidden communities where the legend of Muad'Dib is born and the story picks up the pace.

Dune: Part Two is expected to be released on October 20, 2023.

The ending felt so random with Paul suddenly being challenged by some odd dude. Would've felt way more impactful if it was a named character that had chased Paul for the whole movie

Dune is honestly one of my favorites of all time just from the IMAX experience alone. But damn it felt like a religious/spiritual experience all on its own. Can’t wait for Part 2!

The first movie very much felt like a part 1, and that is probably my biggest complaint about it. There are plenty of part 1 films out there that stand on their own, but this film certainly felt like half of a film/story. And yeah, it did end a bit randomly and suddenly. Also, for such a long film, there was not a whole lot at times happening of importance for big stretches.

Anyways, a beautifully shot and sounding, well-made, well-acted, and well-directed film that never quite arose to the epic and spectacular heights that it could/should have- a really good but not excellent film. Hoping the sequel is great!

@HeavyMetal4Life - Yeah, that was my problem with it too. From moment to moment it was really good but as a whole it felt underwhelming. I still think it was better this way than cramming everything into just one film. I'm confident that together with Part 2 it will be great if you see them back to back. Villeneuve is one of the few filmmakers I trust blindly, in my opinion he's only made masterpieces in the last 10-15 years.

@Pssst - yeah, and I'll confess that I'm not very familiar with the source material, and there was a bit more that I would have liked to have explained for the average viewer. So I'm not sure if there could have been some stuff from part 2 included in this film, and vice versa, to make the movie more palatable and well-balanced. Idk. I know this is a really tough book/series to adapt, and Villeneuve largely handled it very well.

I definitely will rewatch this again right before seeing the sequel.

The sound design during the escape where Paul ran back into the fray and Gurney saved him was A MASTERCLASS

I finally found time to watch Dune last week. Good movie. I re-watched Blade Runner 2049 last night (after not having seen it in at least a year). Dune won 6 Oscars to 2049's 2 Oscars. I guess it's just me, but I thought 2049 is the far better work.

@GeneralZod - I loved them both so much. Dune is more artsy, so maybe that's what put it over the top in terms of awards, but doesn't mean its a better movie.

@Shivermetimbers - 2049 is such a thought-provoking film. Dune is also, but 2049 is just on another level. Much like the original Blade Runner! But alas, the original Dune was awful.

I re-watched Dune last week in theater after (re-)watching The Batman in the same theater - over 5.5 hours of film.

Batman could have used a streamlined first act and the final act was unnecessary.
It felt overlong.

I could have watched another 155 minutes of "Dune part 2" after seeing part 1 or even the near 5 hour cut that Villeneuve shot, though.

Personally i think that Dune - part 2 will do much better at the box office than part 1 with the pandemic no longer being a factor and that "Dune: Messiah" will definetly be made.

I read an interview with Villeneuve last week where he said he wants to do three movies and i think that we will see the third one in 2025.
