DUNE Sequel Could Still Move Forward... Even If PART 1 Doesn't Perform Particularly Well At The Box Office

Though Warner Bros. will obviously be hoping that Dune: Part 1 is a massive box office success, diminishing returns won't necessarily stand in the way of Denis Villeneuve getting to make his sequel.

There is a lot of uncertainly surrounding Dune's box office performance, with many seeming to feel it's a foregone conclusion that a sequel won't be greenlit if Part 1 doesn't prove to be at least a moderate success for Warner Bros.

It's a logical assumption to make - especially for a movie with a reported $165+ million price tag - but, in this case, it may not be quite so cut and dry.

Variety reports that director Denis Villeneuve could still get the opportunity to make Dune: Part 2 if the first film underperforms in theatres, because the studio gave the filmmaker certain assurances to convince him to agree to the day and date streaming release. So, diminished box office returns won’t necessarily prohibit him from moving forward with a sequel, as long as the movie is a hit on HBO Max.

Villeneuve has already expressed how excited he is to continue/conclude this story, and is confident that he will get the chance to do so.

"If such a thing as Dune: Part Two happens, I will say that it's going to be an insane playground for me," he reiterates to Variety. "It's going to be just like pure cinematic pleasure for the second part. I don't want to speak for everybody on the team, but I will say that we really created on this movie a feeling of family and to re-unify everybody again together, that would be paradise."

Dune is set to hit theaters and HBO Max on October 22. Do you guys plan on checking it out on the big screen? Drop us a comment down below.

They'll green light it after it sweeps the oscars. And those idiots at hbo max will pat themselves on the back for being stupid

Well, I hope that's true because I'm going to do my part and watch the hell out of it on HBOmax, that's for sure.

@inkniron - I keep starting stuff and just going back to the sopranos

@TheWalkingCuban - I've seen almost all the great show that HBO has put out going back to OZ, and yet I still have never seen The Sopranos. It eluded me at the time and I've wanted to pick it up the last couple of years, but never have. Maybe I'll give it an episode a day starting this weekend and by Thanksgiving I can check out The Many Saints of Newark. (Maybe I should have done this a couple months ago)

@inkniron - I may eventually check that movie out but man without James Gandolfini, it’s just not the Sopranos. But do me a favor and after say a Season or two of the Sopranos, watch the MADtv Sopranos skit, I watch it every few years now and I die laughing every single time.

@inkniron - @inkniron - I was the same but finally watched it during the pandemic. Great show, but it got a little repetitive feeling for me by the end. I thought they ended it at a good time. Can’t wait for the movie though. It looks fantastic.

@TheWalkingCuban - Well, his son is playing a young version of Tony. I would say he's a spitting image but I have no idea what a young James Gandolfini looked like. He almost looks like a love child of JG and John Cusack, tbh.

@Shivermetimbers - That much content, when I get behind, just seems a bit daunting, even though I've never been much for binging and don't have to take it all in at once.

@dragon316 - If they wanted to charge a premium to watch from home, then I'd pay that. Blame WB, not me.

How about your watch it in the theater and I'll watch it on my home theater that I've invested nicely in.

It's fairly obvious that Warner Bros. is calculating profits differently – otherwise virtually anything they've released in 2021 wouldn't get sequels because most of them have not done particularly well – that being said 'Dune' is still going to have to do perform in the theatrical space get a sequel. If it under performs, that is not likely to happen (no matter what happens with HBOMax).

Shouldn't be a problem, since trying to rewind 5 seconds totally doesn't make the HBO Max app start moving like this

I'm convinced that that app was designed by people who hate the audience that'll have to use it

@OmegaDaGrodd - The most annoying thing is it doesn’t save your place across devices. Every other app I have I can turn it off in the living room and load it up in my bedroom when my girl wants to go to bed. HBO max only saves the spot you left off on that device so you have to go into the episodes and see where you were manually it’s really annoying

I gotta be honest I think not only is it going to flop I think most people are going to be confused by this movie and it’s not going to get a lot of positive word of mouth from the GA. I’ll be seeing it and I hope I’m wrong but I think this might be a bit above the GA in terms of what they expect from sci-fi. Hell even after watching every trailer as someone who’s never read the book or seen the previous movie I have absolutely no idea what the movie is about I’m just watching it because of DV

@Ha1frican - I think you're right.
Ha1frican
Ha1frican - 9/14/2021, 8:14 AM
@Arthorious - Probably slightly above Inception. I think it’s going to be just inaccessible enough that most people write it off but a small group is extremely passionate about it which tbh is kinda his MO at this point.

I’ll say this, if I wasn’t someone who followed DV and knew he was attached to this I probably wouldn’t watch it because aside from having a giant worm and cool music the trailers give you absolutely no grasp on what the story is. It’s like it expects everyone to have a built in irreverence for Dune and that’s not the case and I felt that when watching Shang-chi everyone looked around when the trailer came on like they were the only ones who didn’t get it and that’s not a good sign
Ha1frican
Ha1frican - 9/14/2021, 8:16 AM
@Kozmik - I hope I’m not, I want it to do well bc DV deserves a win he’s a brilliant filmmaker. I will say if ever there was a movie where an HBO Max release could actually help it I think it’s be this. I see more people giving it a chance on streaming that have never heard of it than would go to a theater and I think that might be its saving grace. Something as unknown and seemingly dense as Dune could benefit from it just being available to people and being able to be paused whenever you want
GeneralZod
GeneralZod - 9/14/2021, 8:32 AM
@Ha1frican - That's right. It's going to be a redux of 37 years ago. If you hadn't read the book, the 1984 film, with a really good cast, was impossible to follow for the GA and, consequently, the film flopped.
Kozmik
Kozmik - 9/14/2021, 10:28 AM
@Ha1frican - As I said, you're probably not. Not only is there little in the way of demand for 'Dune,' making it available at the same time on HBOMax not only turns what should be an event movie into a 'meh' one. No one can tell me that HBOMax subscribers are going to see it on the streaming platform then decide to pay to see it in theaters.

Then there's the fact that most people, such as myself, who read the novel did so decades ago.

There's just no demand for this.

And that's not to say that that necessarily means that it's not going to be a success though it increases the odds significantly.
