GODZILLA VS. KONG Sequel Gets A Release Date As Denis Villeneuve's DUNE: PART TWO Is Hit By Delay

We have some big release date news to share with you as the Godzilla vs. Kong sequel has found a home, and Dune: Part Two moves to a weekend where it's likely to face a lot of very stiff competition...

Deadline (via SFFGazette.com) has revealed that we'll be waiting a little longer than expected for Denis Villeneuve's Dune: Part Two, as Warner Bros. has moved the highly anticipated sequel from October 20, 2023 to November 17, 2023.

Considering we didn't expect Dune to actually get any sort of follow-up thanks to its dual HBO Max/theatrical release, we can cope with waiting an extra month! Regardless, November is a good spot for the movie, and a slot we know Warner Bros. favours. In the past, it's been saved for the likes of Justice League and Fantastic Beasts, though we anticipate Dune: Part Two faring better than either of those struggling franchises.

In terms of competition, Lionsgate has The Hunger Games prequel, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, scheduled for that same day, so it will be interesting to see whether they back down. That franchise has a large YA following, but so do Timothee Chamalet and Zendaya!

Rebecca Ferguson, Javier Bardem, and Josh Brolin are expected to reprise their roles in Dune: Part Two, while recent additions include Léa Seydoux, Florence Pugh, Christopher Walken, and Austin Butler.

Trolls 3 and John Krasinski's untitled Ryan Reynolds-led movie are also set for that Thanksgiving weekend, so unless something major happens, it will be a busy few days for theaters.

In related news, the Godzilla vs. Kong sequel finally has a release date: March 15, 2024. Adam Wingard will return to helm the untitled blockbuster that is rumoured to be Son of Kong. Godzilla's future in Legendary's MonsterVerse is unclear after Toho laid out plans to tell their own stories with the iconic Kaiju, so don't go into this one necessarily expecting an epic rematch!

The next couple of years are certainly shaping up to be an exciting time for blockbuster movies, and these both stand a good chance of being hits for Warner Bros.

I feel like this should have been listed as a Kong sequel. Also, isn't Godzila getting his own streaming series?

@Manmarvel - is it a Godzilla show, or a show with Godzilla in it?

Either way, I kinda hope they bring back ATJ and Olsen then

"we didn't expect Dune to actually get any sort of follow-up"

No? Think it was pretty much set in stone with Denis on-board. Couldn't see him do just one half of a story. Wouldn't be surprised if he even build that into the contract.

Anyway, more monster action is always welcome. Secretly, I'm even still hoping for a Pacific Rim/Zillaverse cross-over.

Dune was originally intended to be multi-part story-line, but they lost a lot of faith in the franchise so advertised the film as 'Dune' as opposed to the on-screen title of 'Dune: Part 1'. Those who released it did not expect the film to get a sequel and arguably the first film only generated around $70m profit so it was not certain they would do a part 2.

Part 2 was green-lit after the release of the movie, partially to encourage people to see the first film knowing the story would be continued, but even so it was not set in stone. A lot of companies announce projects as a way of directing attention towards something current and then never deliver on the projects they announced.

@Scarilian - that's a good point.

If it was advertised as Part 1, I probably would've waited for Part 2 to watch the first half. And I bet I'm not only one thinking like that, so that may have resulted in a much lower Box Office and subsequently no incentive for WB to move forward with Part 2.

It was a smart move by WB not advertising it as Part 1, but if they were never sure about a Part 2, then they shouldn't have allowed the first movie to be a Part 1 in the first place at all in my opinion. Like almost every two-parter, the story just didn't feel finished at the end.

Looking forward to both, and Godzilla's Apple+,i really hope we get another Godzilla movie with Biollante in it. I understand they are creating new Kaijus for the Monsterverse, and that's fantastic but Biollante with nowadays technology would look terrifying and amazing. Here's for more Kaiju extravaganza and more mecha content too.

I couldn’t care less about Dune 2… the first was like MMFuryRoad but worse, cinematically beautiful but boring.
Godzilla vs Kong was ok but too many side plots for the humans… cut down the amount of different side plots and I think you could make a cool sequel to Godzilla vs Kong.
