This year's Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire wasn't exactly a monster hit, but it did manage to take in close to $555 million worldwide on a reported $135 million budget. Now, we have word that a sequel is officially in development, and Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures have enlisted a writer to pen the script.

According to THR, Dave Callaham has signed on to write the untitled movie. No plot details have been disclosed, but it's assumed that both the King of the Monsters and the mighty Monarch of Skull Island will return to face a new, potentially world-ending threat.

Callaham has previously worked on several major studio tentpoles, including the 2021 Mortal Kombat reboot, Wonder Woman 1984, Marvel Studios' Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, and Sony Pictures' Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. He also has some prior experience with Big G, having written the early drafts and received story by credit on Gareth Edwards' 2014 Godzilla reboot, which launched the MonsterVerse.

No director is attached at the moment, but there's a chance Adam Wingard will return, having helmed both previous MonsterVerse movies.

The New Empire saw Rebecca Hall (Dr. Ilene Andrews), Brian Tyree Henry (Bernie Hayes) and Kaylee Hottle (Jia) reprise their respective roles from the previous movie, but Millie Bobby Brown and Alexander Skarsgård did not return, with Legion alum Dan Stevens taking over as a main protagonist. Fala Chen, Alex Ferns and Rachel House also joined the cast.

Director Adam Wingard collaborated once more with production designer Tom Hammock, editor Josh Schaeffer, and composer Tom Holkenborg. Terry Rossio was back on script duties, along with Jeremy Slater and Wingard's frequent collaborator Simon Barrett.

"This latest entry follows up the explosive showdown of Godzilla vs. Kong with an all-new cinematic adventure, pitting the almighty Kong and the fearsome Godzilla against a colossal undiscovered threat hidden within our world, challenging their very existence – and our own. The epic new film will delve further into the histories of these Titans, their origins and the mysteries of Skull Island and beyond, while uncovering the mythic battle that helped forge these extraordinary beings and tied them to humankind forever.

The story sees the legendary Titans Godzilla and Kong team up to face a world-ending threat so terrifying that neither could survive alone."

Cool!!.

Callaham’s track record is somewhat mixed so we’ll see how this goes , he might not even remain the sole writer and is just there to get the ball rolling so we’ll see..

I do hope given his experience working on the 2014 Godzilla that it means Big G will be given as much importance as Kong has had these past 2 films because he’s felt moreso like a supporting player then the co-lead imo.

I know that Adam Wingard has even acknowledged that and wanted to correct it in this one so hope that happens..

Otherwise while I found the previous 2 films to just be ok , I am still interested in checking this out!!.

These movies are quickly becoming the new Fast saga.

While I'm willing to have more of them both, I do hope they still do some solo stuff.
I would love an excuse for Kong vs Rodan though... Granted I don't want either to kill the other.

I'd like to see an updated Gigan and Megalon but have either Destoroyah or Biolante be the main big bad that takes all the monsters to defeat.

I hope they tone down the goofiness and ridiculousness. Make it a little more realistic and grounded. That’s what I really liked about Godzilla 2014.

And I don’t think we need another world ending threat. We’ve already had two of those. Perhaps some more personal story with some less powerful villains, but cool fight scenes and what not. Sort of like Captain America, Winter soldier.

Hopefully they Nerf Godzilla. Drain his powers a bit. He’s simply just too powerful now.

That way they can have villains that are less world, ending threats, which we’ve already had two of those

Absolutely absurd.

Given how grounded the 2014 Godzilla was supposed to be, this whole thing has veered so off course, I can't help but be kind of disappointed. Granted, seeing them destroy the Skar King was fun, but these movies by nature are just becoming something more to intentionally laugh at.

@IAmAHoot - honestly , it just reminds me of how the original series starting from Godzilla 1954 went…

That started off “grounded” and more serious but got crazier and more fantastical as they went so history is just repeating itself here I feel.

@IAmAHoot - I can definitely understand if someone prefers one tone then the other but both are valid takes imo and have precedent.

@IAmAHoot - I am super disappointed. I am a huge G fan. I really liked Godzilla 2014 and Kong Skull Island. What came after has been a let down. SO goofy and super un realistic (I know giant monsters)...but G14 really had a realistic tone, a horror element, what we have now is kids toy commercials.

I don't think this guy has ever written anything I didn't think was badly written and not very intelligent.

I loves me some big dumb fun. These movies feel very episodic, but I hope it leads to a conclusion instead of a forever run of kaiju films.

But then again, I remember the OG Godzilla movies and spinoffs had well over 25 on their list. But either way I’d like to see a solid capstone for this run.

As a life-long G-Fan, can't say that GxK:NE is going to be in my top favorite but, the people have spoken. They apparently love nearly 2 hour long, rainbow-colored multi-million dollar toy commercials. I can only assume we should expect more of the same with the next installment. So be it. 🫤

This got an official press release for the sequel before the “hit” Dune 2 😂

I guess it’s “in development” like The Batman II 😂😂

Congrats to a real hit! 🔥🔥🔥
