THE MATRIX Movie In The Works From Drew Goddard - Is He Out Of The Running To Direct SPIDER-MAN 4?

It's been revealed today that a new Matrix movie is officially in the works from writer and director Drew Goddard, but does that take the filmmaker out of the running for Marvel Studios' Spider-Man 4?

Warner Bros. Discovery has confirmed (via SFFGazette.com) that Drew Goddard will write and direct a new Matrix movie for Warner Bros. Discovery. Rumours of a reboot or spin-off have persisted for years, and while we don't know which category this one will fall into, today's news should excite fans of the franchise.

Goddard, who is best known for writing The Martian and directing The Cabin in the Woods, will be joined by franchise co-creator Lana Wachowski as executive producer.

The Matrix was released in 1999 to widespread acclaim, with The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions following in 2003. They didn't receive anywhere near as warm a response as the original, and Lana returned to the property (minus Lilly) in 2021 for The Matrix Resurrections

That also struggled to strike a chord with fans, so now feels like the right time for a fresh start.

There's currently no word on whether original Matrix leads Keanu Reeves, Carrie Anne-Moss, Laurence Fishburne, and Hugo Weaving would be involved in any way, but we'd guess the series is getting a new cast.

Jesse Ehrman, Warner Bros. Motion Pictures President of Production said, "Drew came to Warner Bros. with a new idea that we all believe would be an incredible way to continue the Matrix world, by both honoring what Lana and Lilly began over 25-years ago and offering a unique perspective based on his own love of the series and characters."

"The entire team at Warner Bros. Discovery is thrilled for Drew to be making this new Matrix film, adding his vision to the cinematic canon the Wachowskis’ spent a quarter of a century building here at the studio."

Goddard adds, "It is not hyperbole to say The Matrix films changed both cinema and my life.  Lana and Lilly’s exquisite artistry inspires me on a daily basis, and I am beyond grateful for the chance to tell stories in their world."

The filmmaker also helmed Bad Times at the El Royale and counts the likes of Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Cloverfield, Daredevil, Lost, and World War Z among his many credits.

We'd assume this news takes Goddard out of running to direct Spider-Man 4 for Marvel Studios. It's possible he can do both (scripts do take a while to write...), but it seems unlikely Goddard would jump from one huge franchise to another in such quick succession.

The Matrix franchise revolves around a dystopian future where sentient machines control humanity in a simulated reality called the Matrix to harvest their bioelectricity. The protagonist, Neo, discovers his reality is a simulation and joins a rebellion against the machines.

Some of his very best work was on Alias, a lot of the best episodes had his name on them.

david zaslav watched that meta scene with Groff and Keanu in matrix 4 and went "that's right! we can!"

I'm into it. What they need to do is tap into some of that Animatrix! Never understood why that didn't take off.

For what it's worth i like all the Wachowski's stuff (everything aside from Jupiter ascending). Big fan of sense8 aswell. Discovered it after it was cancelled though. Beautiful stuff.

Lana couldn't kill the franchise but he sure as shit tried.

@HashTagSwagg - lol, that was my first thought when I finished watching resurrections.

I was pretty sure she wanted to kill the franchise.

I would have to see what he wants to do, but my first impression is to pass and/or do a total reboot.

The original Matrix is one of the best sci fi movies of all time. The sequels continued to get worse with each installment. The 4th was absolute trash.

A reboot is unlikely to have the impact the original did.

I’m with @UniqNo and give us an adaptation of the human/machine war and early establishment of the matrix.

@mountainman - damn, I remember watching the 1st in the theater in 99, knowing absolutely nothing about it.

It was glorious.

@mountainman - The 4th definitley doesn't hold a torch to the original but i appreciated it the love story. What didn't work was that they had Keanu back fresh off his John Wick fame and didn't have him do much kung fu, fighting or gunplay at all. Something those movies were well known and liked for. The villian was also kind of lame, though I'm a fan of NPH. I liked the meta aspects but i feel it definitley missed something. I understand it got shut down midway through production though because of covid and Lana didn't want to continue initially so maybe this has something to do with finished product.

The Second Renaissance was great stuff. They could make a feature just off that and will be so timely with all the AI stuff going on in our own world.

I bet the new Terminator anime will also touch on this contemporary stuff.

@UniqNo - 2nd one is better that it gets credit for. That ending with the Architect is wild.

3rd one has very little good going for it. But at least it wrapped it up.

I can’t stand the 4th one at all. Bringing Neo back from the dead is so lame. Would have rather seen something from the tentative peace between man and machine or, if they insisted on holding it in The Matrix, have it be a new iteration after the peace broke down with brand new characters.

@mountainman - Agree with you on the second and third.

I still get confused about that ending though...like was that final DBZ style fight just a pointless spectacle as Neo just lets Smith copy himself in the end. Was it Neo that killed him from the inside or was it the machine boss doing it through Neo as he was plugged into him...

But yeah, i think (hope) this new one will give a new protagonist unrelated to Neo or even the original timeline and what happened 60 years later in resurrections.

@UniqNo - Been a while since i’ve watched the third one, but I believe the machine boss needed Neo to get at Smith.

I just hated that third one because it went all spectacle and ditched the interesting themes of the first two.

@ObserverIO - it's ok in my book. Nothing close to the 1st one but had so much potential for a third film. I was sure Neo found a 2nd Matrix level in the end, when he could control the machines in the real world.
ObserverIO
ObserverIO - 4/4/2024, 12:19 PM
@Fogs - I thought that exact same thing too, when I saw it in the cinema. That would have been mind-blowing. But would the audience have been ready for that dream within a dream within a dream scenario back then? It would have been a massive head-[frick] for a casual movie goer.
Fogs
Fogs - 4/4/2024, 2:10 PM
@ObserverIO - yeah it would. They could spend the 3rd film with him discovering it, and being the 1st chosen one to bypass that contingence.

The perfect ending would be him waking up in another one, perhaps being in a a lush forest harvest to differentiate from the 1st awakening, wondering if that was the REAL world or not. would be as shocking as the 1st film IMO. Would take guts to do something like that, but the Wachowski were top notch at the time and could pull it off.

But they preferred the dumb road cause they thought the story would continue in that dumb matrix online sudo-mmo game nobody even remembers existed.

Keanu is a legendary actor. Truth be told, it was often pretty painful watching him in John Wick 4. Not due to his acting skills, but due to his age. It was pretty evident he cannot move like he used to, particularly when it comes to fighting scenes. This makes me wonder if he will involved in the new matrix movie.

Hmmm, I’m mixed on it.

On one hand i think they should let this franchise rest…

However on the other hand , I like Goddard and would be interested to see his take on this universe especially since he came to them with the idea and not vice versa.

Anyway we’ll see…

I guess I gotta do a rewatch of the trilogy and finally see Resurrections (heard mixed things about it).

The last one was AWFUL. Its only value was in highlighting some nostalgic characters (like the Merovingian). Its a cool world though and a prequel could be cool.

I still remember coming out of the Original Matrix movie and thinking

Oh My God that was EPIC

I couldn't wait for the sequels

I read every theory

It became my Star Wars

The sequels were a disappointment and part 4 was a disaster

Hoping this brings back the Original's Hype
