PREY: Here's How That [SPOILER] Connects The Reboot With Original PREDATOR Movies

There's a blink and you'd miss it moment in Prey connecting Hulu's reboot with the original Predator trilogy, and you can find a breakdown of exactly what that means right here. Obviously, spoilers follow!

It's been 35 years since Predator was released, and the franchise has now been given a fresh start courtesy of Hulu's Prey. None of the movies before this one have managed to live up to the 1987 classic, and placing the action in the Comanche Nation in 1719 means this latest effort has been unburdened of any baggage left by its predecessors.

At the end of Prey, Amber Midthunder's Naru squares off with the Predator one final time, but has some help courtesy of a weapon given to her by a French fur trapper.

The Predator wipes out his men, and in exchange for Naru helping him deal with his injuries, he gives her a gun (that's ultimately used to kill the invader). Returning to camp after the beast has been slain, she presents the weapon to her elders and it's then we see that it bears the name Raphael Adolini.

Does that ring a bell?

As SFFGazette.com explains, it's the same gun that the Predator, Yautja Greyback, handed to Danny Glover's Lieutenant Mike Harrigan after he killed the City Hunter in Predator 2 . Since then, tie-in material has established that the weapon was taken from Adolini when his crew betrayed him in 1718, a year before Prey takes place.

That must mean the Frenchman who helps Naru was one of those men, but seeing as Greyback then took the weapon at that time, we have to assume this franchise isn't following those comics too closely (instead creating a new canon that fits into the movies). This gun does end up in Greyback's hands somehow, though, so something tells us Naru isn't done with these aliens quite yet.

This is a fun way to link up this prequel movie with the originals, and it's certainly left us intrigued about where director Dan Trachtenberg hopes to take the story next.

Prey is now streaming on Hulu and Disney+.

The predators take trophies so that can't be good for the tribe. I enjoyed the movie, now I get to watch the other ones in order

@MyCoolYoung - Yeah, the moment I saw the gun I was "they dead".
Which is weird, considering the predators are "honorable", and are ok with getting an L...except for the predator in the first movie, who couldnt take it, and blew himself up...maybe he is the one getting the gun back?
Anyway, no need for another movie explaning that, just leave it up to the imagination.

@TheHumanSpider2 - Maybe, like in Predator 2, the hunting party came down to "congratulate" her in winning, and she gave them the pistol in a exchange.

@TheHumanSpider2 - That doesn't mean the tribe will die. That gun could just be the lingering Easter egg that travels through every film connecting the timeline till it eventually gets back to Greyback. That gun could end up somewhere else 100 years later away from the Comanche tribe.

@HeeroG - it shown at the end of the credits, that the predators come back to the tribe.

I think there is something that doesnt need an "official" anwser.

@HeeroG - That's what I was thinking. Or the Elder Predator from Predator 2 comes to earth as an unblooded and wins the fight and is given the flintlock.

Just watched it, really surprised about how good it was, I have a soft spot for Predator 2, but I can understand people thinking this is the best one since the original.
Hard to believe it took them 30 years to realise all they had to do with this franchise was put the predator in different time periods dealing with different cultures, and that's it, there is your franchise, you can make like 20 of these movies based on that premise alone.

About a sequel? nah, its pretty obvious the predators killed Naru and his tribe and got the gun back, probably lead by the predator from the first movie, which we know was a sore loser.
Considering the good reception this one is getting, set the next one on feudal Japan...and have the characters speak in actual japanese, my only issue with this movie was that the characters in spoke in english instead of their native tongue.

@TheHumanSpider2 - the Predator didn't "get the gun back". they never had it to begin with.
TheHumanSpider2
TheHumanSpider2 - 8/6/2022, 10:20 PM
@JobinJ - They have it in Predator 2, is the gun they give Donald Glover as a "reward".

JobinJ - 8/6/2022, 10:49 PM
@TheHumanSpider2 - You said, "predators killed Naru and his tribe and got the gun back" key word "back"

That's saying that the Predators had the gun before Naru did....they didn't....she got it directly from another human.

So the Predators don't even know about he gun at this point. They probably kill her and take the gun later.

@TheHumanSpider2 - "Hard to believe it took them 30 years to realise all they had to do with this franchise was put the predator in different time periods dealing with different cultures"

They actually just got their "inspiration" from this 2019 fanfilm on youtube:

JoJo1982
JoJo1982 - 8/7/2022, 5:57 AM
@JobinJ - there Is somewhat of a end credit scene, showing the Predators coming back to the tribe

It’s done with those drawing

@JobinJ - Right
TheHumanSpider2
TheHumanSpider2 - 8/7/2022, 9:53 AM
@SethBullock - Fans have been asking for this for those very 30 years, and in the last 20, some of them just made them themselves.
SethBullock
SethBullock - 8/8/2022, 7:58 AM
@TheHumanSpider2 - But I doubt it's just a huge coincidence that in 2019 a fan made this fanfilm set in that time period with those native american protagonists and just a couple of years later an official movie with exactly the same concept is released...
TheHumanSpider2
TheHumanSpider2 - 8/8/2022, 6:14 PM
@SethBullock - That's the thing with fanmade films, the big corporation can steal your idea, and not only get away with it, they can force you to stop showing your fanfilm...
Considering how Disney acts, I'm surprised that fanfilm is still up...

Oh come on. Why decanonize that cool story? We're talking about a pirate so bada$$ that greyback actually teamed up with him for a hunt. Again, this guy had enough respect from the predators that he actually worked side by side with them.
Steel86
Steel86 - 8/7/2022, 1:42 AM
@Origame - Your comment is confusing. In the movies the gun has no backstory other than establishing the Predators have visited Earth before the original movie. In this case 1719. The gun does have backstory in the comics. But even then it wasn't a team up for a hunt; the Predator wanted to kill the pirate but his crew had mutinied so they teamed up to defeat his crew. The pirate was killed in the battle and gave his gun to the Predator as dieing gift.

@Steel86 - Dying, my bad.
Origame
Origame - 8/7/2022, 6:16 AM
@Steel86 - the comic established that that's how greyback got the gun. Bare minimum it means the comic story can't have played out the way it did originally.

Also, hunt was probably a poor word. But greyback respected Rafael enough to fight side by side with him against the mutiniers in order to engage in a fair fight later
