Hitfix caught up with original Robocop Peter Weller at the Star Trek Into Darkness Blu-ray release party and quizzed him about the upcoming remake. Weller says he hasn't seen the trailer but that he wishes them well, right before brilliantly launching into a detailed analysis of what made the original such a classic. I think most fans of the movie know that there's a lot more to it than just blood and bullets, and Weller pretty much sums that all up here.

If directors are to please fans, they have to make new ones without alienating old ones. If they did that, these remakes would be more successful.

There is no such thing of a remake being better than the original. When it comes to an original film there is always a quality and a spirit no one can touch at all.

I hate that stupid "nostalgia goggles" argument. So because we hold these god awful remakes to a high standard I have goggles on huh? No, movies were ten times better back in the day, and got dammit we want Hollywood to gain some originality again.

Alien, the first Predator, Robocop, Conan...those are some movies that will never be fully duplicated.

Think of if they tried rebooting Indiana Jones....motha [frick]as would lose their minds (I hope they would at least).

I say please for the love of god bring us original ideas such as the ones I just mentioned. Stop trying to piggyback on someone else's legacy...

The new RoboCop looks like a generic action figure.

The whole thing looks like it was designed by a committee of toy manufacturers, studio heads and accountants, so they could make the simplest and cheapest action figure playsets for the under-10s.

This bothers me.

Really enjoyed that interview...wasn't expecting to, Robocop has never been interesting to me, always thought of it as B-movie type thing. But his opinions on it are making me reconsider. Very interesting person, with very interesting opinions I feel.

It's a horrible task to have to remake anything by Verhoeven. I don't envy anyone who tries. It's like swallowing a diamond and then trying to crap it out as pretty as it was before you swallowed it. No matter how hard you try, there's going to crap all over something beautiful when all is said and done, and most people are just going to want to flush it.

You can't match the dark comedy of the original. Nor it's excessive violence. God I love that movie.

People need to stop sucking up to Hollywood for remakes, it's just an example of how originality is slowly dying these days. I don't care if the remake is good or not it's just becoming too common. What's going to be left when they remake all the classics more remakes of the remake before. It's just milking the name as a brand for more cash and to make some stupid trendy appeal to a newer generation. Half of the movies we get now are based on some book or based on some idea beforehand. The studios don't care much about that when they get a big box office paycheck in their hands.

Al Pacinos Scarface is a sort of a remake too and I don't give a [frick] about the older one, but to be honest, there aren't many good remakes, the most of them suck.

I really never got why the "I'd buy that for a dollar!" guy was so funny. It'd be like if Jar Jar Binks was a commercial ad on a holovid that kept on popping up on Coruscant, and everyone would turn and giggle at him.

I like the original well enough. Some parts are so damn cheesy, like Miguel Ferrer's character Bob and well, all of Boddicker's men.

But the remake looks like a generic action film. Was the original so generic? Maybe, maybe not. Ignoring the underlying (or not so underlying) statements, sure. But a remake should be made by FANS of the original - people who want to recapture the magic they saw and add onto it. IT SHOULD NOT LOOK GENERIC.

People complain that his suit looks cheesy - I don't think so. I'm sure OCP's going to go through quite a few different ones throughout the movie, and some of the ones (like the silver one where he's wielding two guns and has the giant visor) is likely a prototype worn during some training sim, or perhaps the visor transforms during use for different applications. Anyway, the look isn't the big issue.

Weller's point here is that "the soul is not for human consumption."

I know he'd be the first one to step up and call Verhoeven "gifted", and while I do own three of his movies - I can only call ONE of them truly amazing. And it was made in the 70s.


Soldier of Orange, starring Rutger Hauer. World War II from a Dutch angle. It's very much like Deer Hunter where you have a group of friends who go off to be involved in this horrible war and tragedy, but some end up on different sides of the occupation. No one comes out unscathed, without scars, without loss, and their friendships are emptied in the end. What's really great though, is the FEEL of the production. Movies like that aren't made today because damn, it wouldn't be safe for the actors. That sense of legitimacy is all but GONE in movies these days.

But the lack of subtitles might be a problem

....I liked the Evil Dead remake, BUT that was because both Sam Raimi the director of the original film and Bruce Campbell who starred in the original film produced it. Not some smucks at a studio who thinks they know what they are doing.

The Oldboy remake? The original Oldboy film (The Better Version) was loosely based on a Japanese manga comic. So technically again the remake is another "re-adaptation" but the fact they are making a total Americanized version changing nearly everything including the characters is insulting. They would have been better off going with a more original idea.

Sometimes you've got to put the book aside and take it for what it is. Millions of manga out there, and the one that gets adapted just so happens to be Park Chan-Wok's most critically acclaimed film.

Using the excuse "it's based off a book" as a means to say "it's not a remake" just doesn't work.
Spike Lee's movie might actually be a hell of a lot more faithful to the manga than Park's film, but the only reason it's being made is because of Park's success.

Just the same as "Let the Right One In", which will always be superior to the remake "Let Me In". It's a cash in on popularity.

LOL Hell no, the remake to Total Recall was bad enough.
If this new Robocop reboot were rated R then YES there would be a very good chance for it to be as good as the original but it's PG-13.

I have to chime in here and say TheJacky is RIGHT. Look Im all for the new Robocop, but only because it will bring attention to the original classic.

We all love robocop for ONE reason and one reason only. the 1987 movie. it BEGINS and ENDS there. It is impossible for the remake to be BETTER. Sure it could be magnificent and maybe just as good on a different level, but NEVER better. Theres a REASON they are remaking it in the first place.

the remake is based on ONE fil from 1987, not a span of comic books that have lasted years, or some graphic novel, manga etc. There IS a DEFINITIVE Robocop. Its much different when your remaking a MOVIE that isn't based on anything at all in the first place. Rebooting batman, superman, etc is much different. There is no definitive version of those characters. It can't be compared to tool recall, because again, TR had roots before the first Verhoeven movie.

I have a feeling that the remake will be entertaining, but not much more. It reeks of a studio trying to set up another franchise, rather than make a film that stands on it's own as the original did. Terrible sequels aside....that first movie is damn near close to perfection.
