Neill Blomkamp On His ROBOCOP Movie That Would Have Started With The Final Scene From The 1987 Film

The original RoboCop film ended with OCP Senior President Dick Jones crashing through a skyscraper window, and Neill Blomkamp's sequel would have begun the next day.

Neill Blomkamp has been linked to a number of in-development projects with renowned sci-fi film franchises over the years, including Aliens, Halo, and RoboCop. Blomkamp addressed the latter in a new interview with JoBlo, indicating that his sequel would have aimed to emulate Paul Verhoeven's directing approach.

"That’s the only film that I would have ever done where I would have tried to basically simulate Paul Verhoeven’s directing style,” the District 9 and Elysium director told JoBlo.

I wanted it to feel like it was the day after. Like if Dick Jones fell out of the window on Monday, this would have been Tuesday. It was like literally the next morning that it began. So it was a direct sequel exactly in the same style.

Blomkamp's sequel was thought to be titled RoboCop Returns, and was based on an unproduced spec story written by the original RoboCop film's script writers, Edward Neumeier and Michael Miner. His sequel/reboot would have skipped over the events of RoboCop 2 and 3, as well as the poorly-recieved 2014 remake starring Joel Kinnaman, Gary Oldman, and Michael Keaton.

RoboCop Returns was first announced in January 2018, with Blomkamp continuing its development until August 2019. At that point, he bowed out of the project in favor of filming a supernatural horror film titled, Demonic, during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Abe Forsythe (Little Monsters, Tripping Over) was selected to replace Blomkamp in November 2019.

However, in March 2023, MGM was acquired by Amazon, giving the streamer control of the RoboCop franchise. Amazon later revealed plans for a RoboCop TV series and a new film, both of which are considered to be independent from what Blomkamp and Forsythe were working on.

@nibs - What? He's up and down, sure. But I wouldn't say he's never made a good movie.

This sounds cool. We need an R rated anime or Invincible style animated series.

All these movies that are meant to be direct sequels to the original all end up being just as bad as the sequels they ignore.

Interesting idea but you could do it from the end of Robocop 2 because Robocop 3 sucked balls.

This hack couldn't hold Verhoeven's jockstrap.

What a dumb take! I can understand for maybe a TV show probably...back when it first came out. Or hell even a kids TV show since it was already attempted but NAH I'm glad they past.

Was he going to recast Lewis as well?

I would of preferred to see Robocop in a timeline where he was decommissioned. I mean theres gotta be upgraded Robocops around. I imagined Detroit to be way more dystopian if it went the route I thought it would take. But no....THE DAY AFTER...WHAT LOL

I’ll never understand the hate for Robocop 2. That movie rocks.

He always gets excited about everything... and then nothing happens. I'm still waiting for his adaptation of The Gone World, not happening as usual, I guess.

The 2014 remake wasn't poorly received from my recollection. Stop making up history for yourselves.

@rkshuttleworth - The watered down 2014 Robocop remake scored 49% on Rotten Tomatoes with critics AND audiences.
It's rare that critics and regular people are in that much agreement on reviews, so the general consensus is that movie was poorly received.
