RoboCop, in Paul Verhoeven's 1987 film, was originally supposed to drive around in a custom built vehicle, like Batman does. It had several nicknames: "Robo-Car," "Robo-Mobile" and "Turbo-Car." A final design was complete and brought to set, but when the crew reacted with laughter director Paul Verhoeven decided to scrap it and go with a Ford Taurus. Surprisingly, Ford wanted nothing to do with the film. Mostly cause of the excessive violence. This forced producers to purchase the vehicles outright, instead of normally getting them for free in exchange for free publicity. Now, let's take a look at some of the early and final designs for the Robo-Car that artist Robert Webb illustrated.

There's a new law enforcer in town and he's half man, half machine! From the director of Total Recall and Basic Instinct comes a "sci-fi fantasy with sleek, high-powered drive" (Time) about an indestructible high-tech policeman who dishes out justice at every turn! When a good cop (Peter Weller) gets blown away by some ruthless criminals, innovative scientists and doctors are able to piece him back together as an unstoppable crime-fighting cyborg called "RoboCop." Impervious to bullets and bombs, and equipped with high-tech weaponry, RoboCop quickly makes a name for himself by cleaning up the crime-ridden streets of violence-ravaged Detroit. But despite his new, hardened exterior, RoboCop is tormented by scraps of memory of his former life, and relives vivid nightmares of his own death at the hands of the vicious killers. Now he is out to seek more than justice...he wants revenge!

Actors: Peter Weller, Nancy Allen, Dan O'Herlihy, Ronny Cox, Kurtwood Smith

Interesting but I always thought it was cool that he used the standard cop car.

Hey now... Total Recall was PG-13 and they got the 3 titted mutant in there.... Movie was shit but you know.

Maybe we'll get our lady cop in the locker room scene, lol.
But I mean, it's obvious Murphy isn't getting torn to shreds by Red Foreman in this movie, he's getting blown up. So they've pretty much ruled out the gore.

Fun stuff, but I'm glad they put him in a squad car. Showed that deep down, behind all the armor and circuits, he was still a cop.

That last image reminds me of Inspector Gadget's car.

Hey kids, if you are going to dig into the new Robocop for being "PG-13", please be aware that the two sequels were PG-13 too, and no one complained. If anything, they complained about a little kid gang banger (part 2) and "Villain-izing" the Japanese (part 3). Also, 20 years later, PG-13 is pretty much a general rating. So stop it children.

These all look like ideas for a Cannonball Run prequel.

@THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - Not "a standard cop car" at the time. Just an average Ford Taurus if I recall. I was about 17 when the movie hit theaters, and my friends and I all thought it was cheesy to use a Taurus, but the rest of the film was so incredible it didn't matter. (On a side note, I remember telling everyone that the film was a satire, and they all thought I was nuts. I was finally proven right in the early '00s w/Verhoeven's commentary track. FINALLYYYY! ahem.)

Good point as far as the storyline basically being satirical, but I hated the third installment loved the first, but I actually enjoy part 2 teen kingpin the most! But I digress, the 80s concept of a "bought and sold" police department is all but reality at this point....I know in Houston depending on what part there are private police departments running patrols alongside city PD.
