Not to mention the original was a clever satire of american culture in the 80's, an element of irony that is clearly not in this one. At least Dredd had the guts to be R rated

Yea, Hollywood is even more unwilling to put any money into R rated comic book movies after Watchmen and Dredd bombed, so instead we get watered down versions of dark characters like Ghost Rider and Spawn etc

I'm not going to pan this movie, before I get a chance to actually watch it. From what I've seen from the trailer, I'm interested to see how this Robocop's story play out. Plus, I'm of the opinion that a lot of people may have misinterpreted some elements shown in the trailer.

The black suit vs blue suit seems to be one of the prevailing object of fan criticism, and would seem to center around the familiarity of the blue suit. Those who don't like the black suit usually tend to focus on the simplicity and lack of variety of the black suit. Essentially, the original movie creates a basis of what Robocop should look like, and, due to the viewer's prior connection to this, most viewers would expect to see an updated version of this. However, based on the trailer, I believe the suit is being set up as a plot device to show the depth and evolution of the character of Robocop. It appears, the blue suit is the original, breathtaking advancement in technology that Robocop's creators, whom I'll call The Company, shows off to the world. He's the perfect fusion of man and technology, but this causes a problem as his humanity means he still has a mind of his own and, thus, can't be completely controlled. He rebels against his programing, leading to The Company shutting him down, and finally Robocop 2.0., or black Robocop. With Robocop 2.0 he's much more machine than man, and as such he's built for practicality, efficiency, and mass production. This Robocop is much more deadly and cold and strikes fear into Criminals and Citizens alike as it mainly functions to follow orders and sees crime as black in white. In other words, doesn't have much of a human side to differentiate between good and bad people, or shades of gray, it just sees crime and punishment. I think what we're see Robocop become a villain of sorts as we watch an honest Alex Murphy struggle with the greed of The Company.

The other source of contention is the exposed hand, and perceived awkwardness of it. I think the intention of the hand is simply to serve as bride between Alex and the world around him, and is his last link with human Alex Murphy. With his main hand still intact not only can Alex still feel his environment, but when he touches the people in the streets they're greeted with something familiar instead of something cold and fearsome. Ultimately, I believe Alex is fated to lose this hand and will further act as a strong player in the battle of man vs machine.

As a fan of the original, the prospect of this remake doesn't scare me, instead I'm excited to see it. When February breezes through in a burst of cold that's always fiery in execution, I'll be in line buying my ticket at my local IMAX theater. Should the movie turn out bad so be it, and should it turn out to be gem then that's all the better. Either way, I'm a still a fan and I couldn't be more excited.

Also, in regards to the movie's ratings, PG-13 is like a hair away from what some rated R movies were back then. With the exception of the amount of f#@! and B&%$# in the original, it would've been PG-13 by today's standards.

Okay, this was funny. But Robocop, before it got on TBS or USA or saturday morning cartoons or a sequel, was as hard an R as you could get today. Rambo level violence, Hostel level gore. Dredd is the closest I have seen to it in decades.

as I remember it, Robocop had some pretty arresting violence, gore that was so graphic/stylized/over the top it became funny. I seriously doubt it would pass as PG 13 today

LOTR trilogy, Casino Royale was pretty violent (ball spanking anyone?) and Skyfall, The Bourne Trilogy, The Dark Knight, Live Free or Die Hard, True Grit, Terminator Salvation, The Green Goblin was impaled in Spider-man, Alien Vs Predator, War of the Worlds had people getting their insides sucked out by giant alien tripods, Hanna, and Taken to name a few were all very violent and very much PG-13.

Those movies had graphic dismemberment, decapitations, torture, head shots, neck snapping, people exploding etc. Even when the violence wasn't graphic and only implied a lot of times it was done quite convincingly. For example, when the Joker stabbed Gamble in the eye. My point is, if all of that can be done with PG-13, the they very much can get their point across with that rating, especially if the core of the story is just as much character based as it is action. I don't think in 2013 PG-13 takes away from this movie. The movie seems more serious in tone than the fun of seeing a cyborg pulling it's own brains out.

"even when" is the key phrase. I didn't say this is always how they do it. PG-13 won't take away from this movie. I've already seen Robocop, a good remake means I'll get to see a NEW movie that's well done. Hopefully, that's what this'll be, but it could be bad. However, if it's bad for me it's because it's a bad movie not because there wasn't enough of the original in it. I want to see this movie for what it is now, not what the original was.

If the story's good, f#@! it! That's all I need, and all I'll be looking for. I'll reserve judgement until I see it or more of it, unitl then, I won't base my feelings on comparing it to the original. Besides, although a classic, the original wouldn't even hold up if it debuted now as is. I want to see something new and well done.

I will say this. One of the better remakes I've seen recently did pay quite a bit of homage to it's predecessor, and that was Evil Dead, though I thought this might've been a gift and a curse as it wasn't as original as it could've been story-wise to me, but still well executed.

This is what's gonna happen to this movie:

It will be a hit like World War Z.

Fanboys on the internet will moan all about it raping their childhood for the rest of the year while the rest of the world doesn't loose any sleep.

Nobody of any significance gives a flying [frick] about a Dredd sequel because the first movie was a repugnant, contrived, gore-fest. They've set up tons of petitions and even a sequel comic and still nobody gives a [frick]. seriously, people need to let that Dredd shit go!

There is mo point in remaking a film the same as the original, if you're going to remake a movie then it has to be re-imagined enough to make the experience worth while and different.

Ceejay spoke the truth.

Nothing is more predictable these days than fanboy whining. Yet most of the world saw a great trailer.

This will be a hit. Not prepared to bet my house on it but almost
