STAR TREK Movie From ANDOR Director Set Decades Before 2009 Film In The Works; STAR TREK 4 Still On Track

After finding success with the revamped Star Trek universe on TV, Paramount Pictures is ready to boldly go back to the big screen.

According to Deadline (via SFFGazette.com), a new Star Trek movie is in the works from Andor director Toby Haynes. Details are few and far between, but the project is said to be an "origin" story set decades before the events of J.J. Abrams' 2009 reboot.

Haynes also helmed the Trek-inspired "USS Callister" episode of Black Mirror.

Seth Grahame-Smith is writing the script, and Abrams will produce through his Bad Robot company.

A fourth Star Trek movie featuring the "Kelvin-Verse" crew first introduced in the 2009 film has been stuck in development hell for years at this stage, but is reportedly still in development as "the final chapter for this crew."

This news is sure to be welcomed by fans, but, as far as we know, the film is still without a director since Matt Shakman departed the project to helm Marvel Studios' Fantastic Four reboot.

In his last interview on the subject, Shakman said that, even though his Trek movie would have been a "large tent-pole film," he believes the universe is better suited to a slightly smaller budget.

"I actually think that the way forward on a Star Trek movie is maybe to make one that's like $30 to $50 million, that's hard sci-fi, aimed right at the fans. In our day and age now, any time you go to space in a movie it's expensive. When you're flying around in the Enterprise, even if you're going to land and be in one place for a long time, it's still pretty expensive."

Principal cast members Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldaña, Karl Urban, John Cho and Simon Pegg are expected to return, but nothing is set in stone just yet, and it's been far from smooth sailing for the crew of the Enterprise.

"I think there’s a lot of other stuff, creative things. It’s complicated," Quinto said during a recent convention appearance. "The fact that anything good gets made is kind of a miracle. I think it’s about different people having different agendas and ideas about what it will be. And I don’t know if and when it will happen. And if coalesces again, and we come back, and we’re able to do it, wonderful. If not, we had a great run."

The "different agendas" quote is likely a reference to the sheer amount of ideas that have been considered and creative teams that have been attached to the Star Trek Beyond follow-up over the years. One early concept would have focused on a reunion between Chris Pine's Captain Kirk and his father, played in 2009's Star Trek by Chris Hemsworth, and there was even an R-rated take from Quentin Tarantino in the works at one point.

What do you make of this news? Do you think the origin movie will focus on any established characters, or introduce a brand-new crew? Drop us a comment down below.

If it’s set decades before the Abrams movie, isn’t it just set in regular continuity? Didn’t the Kelvin Timeline branch due to events in the 09 movie?

@CerealKiller1 - Simon Pegg said the events changed both the past as well as the future.

I really loved Star Trek 2009, and then the sequel happened.. luckily Beyond was a true return to form and guess what! The problem was Jar Jar Abrams, this mofo didn't even like Star Trek as a kid! I'll give it a chance if this ass hat is far gone

@bobevanz - Well he loved Star Wars and um...yeah lol.

Also despite what the article says ST4 has never been "on track", especially since Yelchin's passing

@bobevanz - Exactly.

As soon as I saw "Abrams will produce through his Bad Robot company." My expectation dropped.

Unless you are going dramatize some interesting not-before-seen, but talked about period of the Trek lore (like the Romulan war, which almost was a movie trilogy before 09 reboot was made instead), I don't feel Star Trek needs more prequels. In a franchise all about speculating what our future could look like, one shouldn't shackle themselves to the pre-established continuity (I.E. The writers can't include certain level of tech, because canonically it wasn't invented at that point yet and the like) and the quality of Trek prequels we have had so far has been pretty dodgy.

@FinnishDude - I disagree, I don’t know much about Trek lore (I loved 09 and only passingly watched TNG) but I would love to see a movie about the creation of the warp drive and first contact.

@kg8817 - There already is a movie about the First Contact.

Damn good news, actually enjoyed the reboot films, especially the 2009 film. Pine is just great as Kirk.

I agree. It's kind of a bummer seeing the movie side of Star Trek sitting dormant for so long.

Can we go to the future please? Not like Discovery which is dogcrap butt more like Picard Season 3 or a sequel to DS9 or Voyager.
WarMonkey
WarMonkey - 1/12/2024, 7:30 AM
@EnergyVamp - I wish but we won't. Season 3 was only able to be as awesome as it was cause Alex Kurtzman wasn't involved. He was busy screwing up other stuff so Terry Mattalas had free reign to make it great. Now that it was well received and the fans loved it Kurtzman and others will now take it again, push Mattalas out and try to capitalize on the good will he created. Future of Trek is dead at Paramount with JJ and Kurtzman involved. Also, no one is gonna be helping them fund a new movie or distribute it so it's already a non-starter.

Lol I think the constant need to go back before Kirk became captain of the Enterprise or the five year mission is becoming slightly annoying. Like there is a whole gap between the 24th Century & the 32nd Century. Explore THAT for a movie or series. The prequel thing has been done to death.

Enterprise did it
Star Trek 09 did it and starts literally before Kirk is captain of the Enterprise and before the five year mission
Star Trek Into Darkness STILL before the five year mission
Discovery Season 1 & 2 did it
Strange New Worlds did it.

All I want is for them to move FORWARD in the Star Trek timeline or just make Star Trek 4.

If it's anything like the first two seasons of Picard or Star Trek:Discovery.

I wonder if this being an “origin” movie set decades before the Kelvin reboot , maybe that means this could be about the beginnings of Starfleet which could be interesting imo.

Anyway , I like the choice of Toby Haynes as director but it’s Seth Grahame Smith as a writer that makes me uncertain so cautiously optimistic so far.

Still much more looking forward to Star Trek 4 , I hope it actually happens and ends the series well since i have liked those films.

WarMonkey
WarMonkey - 1/12/2024, 7:40 AM
@marvel72 - Star Wars by far. Star Trek can always be rebooted or moved into the future and just forget all the JJ and Kurtzman crap. Star Wars has no future at Disney, they have screwed up the universe so completely there is no way to fix it anymore without retconning everything after Return of the Jedi and Solo. SW is kinda in the same place as Doctor Who where they both have had their canon, mythos and world-building destroyed to a place where actual sci-fi and fantasy fans have checked out and won't be coming back.

Do we really need an origin story? The beginnings and early days of Starfleet have already been covered in various episodes and movies to a certain extent and 2009's Star Trek was a origin story for Kirk's crew.

Personally, I'd really like a fourth movie with the "Kelvin-Verse" crew as I really like what they've done with those movies so far. I really like the cast as well. They did a really good job of 'reinventing' the OG series characters.

I'll believe Star Trek 4 is coming when they actually start filming it. I personally doubt that it ever happens, it's honestly been too long now. As for this prequel, I'll also believe that when I see it. And I'm not sure how much "success" Paramount has had with Star Trek on Paramount+. The final season of Picard was good, because it wasn't just Picard, it was the who Next Generation cast. Strange New Worlds has been good too for the most part, and I assume has had decent ratings. I haven't really watched Lower Decks beyond the first season, it mainly seemed to be a satirical version of Star Trek, and I haven't watched Prodigy at all. As for Discovery....the less said about that woke piece of garbage, the better. The only good thing to come out of it was Strange New Worlds.
