X-MEN Franchise Producer And DARK PHOENIX Director Simon Kinberg Boards Upcoming STAR TREK Prequel Movie

The next Star Trek movie is taking shape at Paramount Pictures, with veteran X-Men producer Simon Kinberg boarding the upcoming prequel in that role. Find more details on the project after the jump...

Paramount Pictures has a few successful franchises (once upon a time, they distributed the Marvel Cinematic Universe's offerings), but the studio's apparent inability to do more with Star Trek is beyond confusing.

When J.J. Abrams relaunched the franchise in 2009, the stage was set for it to become a mainstream property, something which looked increasingly likely when the sequels - Star Trek Into Darkness and Star Trek Beyond - were also moderate box office hits. Unfortunately, Star Trek 4 has been stuck in development hell for several years.

Filmmakers such as Quentin Tarantino, Matt Shakman, Lindsey Beer, and Geneva Robertson-Dworet are just some of the names who have been attached to the movie in recent years, with none of them ultimately sticking around.

Now, with it seemingly no closer to becoming a reality ("I honestly don’t know," was Captain Kirk actor Chris Pine's latest update on Star Trek 4), it seems Paramount's next prequel project is finally taking shape.

According to Puck (via SFFGazette.com), X-Men franchise producer Simon Kinberg is in talks to produce the new Star Trek with Andor filmmaker Toby Haynes attached to direct from a screenplay by Dark Shadows writer Seth Grahame-Smith. This news has since been confirmed by the trades.

It's previously been reported this movie "will serve as an origin story of sorts for the main timeline of the entire franchise," with the studio "focused on rightsizing the budgets to fit within the clear box office ceiling for 'Star Trek' feature films" in the case of both movies.

Star Trek has found greater success on streaming in recent years with the likes of Picard and Star Trek: Discovery, and upcoming projects include the Michelle Yeoh-led Section 31 and YA series, Starfleet Academy

Paramount reportedly intends to still make the "final chapter" of the Chris Pine-led era of Star Trek movies, with Steve Yockey (The Flight Attendant) attached to write a new draft of the screenplay.

Recently, Alex Kurtzman - who oversees all of the franchise's television endeavours - described Star Trek as "an institution" and acknowledged that the series isn't an easy one to share with the masses.

"Doing 'Star Trek' means that you have to deliver something that’s entirely familiar and entirely fresh at the same time," he explains. "You cannot create new fans to the exclusion of old fans. You must serve your primary fan base first and you must keep them happy. That is one of the most important steps to building new fans."

We'll see what happens, but for comic book fans, Kinberg's involvement with Star Trek won't be cause for celebration. His work on the X-Men movies was incredibly divisive and borderline despised (particularly Dark Phoenix), but this is a second shot at sci-fi for Kinberg following a short-lived stint at Lucasfilm to oversee Star Wars Rebels

For now, Kinberg is only attached as a producer and not the movie's director.

Those comments by Kurtzman are hilarious. The guy is basically the posterboy for disliking old fans.

@Reginator - completely agree. They can't even come close to the original crew on terms of on screen chemistry or even acting like them. Only McCoy really. Spock who should be lacking emotion for the most part seems angry most of the time.

And I thought you couldn't get worse than Orci and Kurtzman.

From his work that I’m familiar with , Kinberg’s track record is a mixed bag as a producer & writer (which seems to usually be the case in Hollywood) so we’ll see where this falls if it happens…

I am intrigued by the premise which is apparently set around modern times and is about the creation of Starfleet &
humankind’s first contact with aliens.

Toby Haynes has done good work in the past though I’m moreso iffy on Seth Grahame Smith so we’ll see but cautiously optimistic so far.

I’ve always loved Star Trek it’s the cornerstone of science-fiction entertainment however I’ve had my fill. The JJ Abrams trilogy was solid and I was hoping they would continue with a fourth instalment and I was secretly rooting for Tarantino.
I wanted his take to get the green light because Star Trek feels like it needs a revitalisation, a rejuvenation. Abrams accomplished this with Star Trek because it felt fresh but also familiar at the same time. I don’t watch any of the current shows (Picard/discovery). I don’t know maybe it’s just me but I feel like in the modern age of sci-fi where other franchises such as Star Wars are still relevant, trek feels redundant.

@TheMetaMan -

First was great, second was terrible, still haven’t seen the third.
But I also hope they get Tarantino and Hemsworth for it.

@HulkisHoly - “second one was terrible” haha well I’ll say this. Remaking the wrath of khan and having Spock ask older Spock how he defeated the original khan was just plain silly. They really could have made Benedict cumberbatch play a completely different antagonist. I too want hemsworth to return as Kirk senior.

@TheMetaMan -

Agreed on both accounts.

What were your thoughts of Beyond?

TheMetaMan - 5/22/2024, 12:26 PM
@HulkisHoly - Beyond is good. I like it. It doesn’t go beyond expectations (pun intended) lol but it does enough to entertain. The storytelling on display feels all too familiar and compared to other films within the franchise (first contact, generations, Star Trek) it does feel episodic. The character development is best thing about it. The film takes the time to explore the introspections of the crew which is a nice touch. Cinematography, action & visuals are neat too. Worth watching once.

@TheMetaMan -

My top Tarantino films are…

1. Inglorious Basterds
2. Once Upon a time in Hollywood
3. Reservoir Dogs

What about you?
TheMetaMan
TheMetaMan - 5/22/2024, 1:45 PM
@HulkisHoly - My top list of favourites would be….

1. Pulp fiction
2. Once upon a time in Hollywood.
3 Django Unchained
4. Jackie Brown
5. Inglorious Barterds.

I will emphasise that Pulp fiction is levels above the rest. It’s one of my favourite films. One of the few films I never get bored of, is a timeless classic, boasts career best performances, an excellent soundtrack. Best screenplay and dialogue committed to a film IMO. Most importantly it’s just hilarious, there’s so many memorable moments that crack me up every single time I watch it.
The film is such a vibe if you know what I mean.

His next feature the critic is out next year and it’s will serve as his final directorial effort.
I know little about the story but whatever it is, I’m sure we are going to be in for a fun ride.

I hate it admit it but I honestly need to rewatch pulp fiction.

Yes, I’m really curious about the Critic.
TheMetaMan
TheMetaMan - 5/23/2024, 2:01 AM
@HulkisHoly - Yes I would absolutely suggest to watch pulp fiction again. I’m biased when I say it’s Quentin’s best work, most definitive. Tarantino has even said it’s his favourite film that he’s ever done. It was the first film that i watched out of his filmography. If I never watched it, I wouldn’t have bothered with the rest. Pulp fiction is like the matrix, I can’t explain it or try to sell it to you. Instead you have to experience it for yourself. For me it’s not just a film it’s an experience. There’s s reason why it’s always in the top 10,20,30 greatest films of all time.

If Simon Kinberg writes it, I won't be excited about seeing it.

I will do what I rarely do, and that's read the reviews and comments hear before deciding.
