I'm givin' 'er all she's got, captain!

We've seen several younger/alternate universe takes on the original Enterprise crew reintroduced in the modern Star Trek shows over the years, and in this week's season 2 finale of Strange New Worlds, a certain future Chief Engineer joined the fray.

Mongomery "Scotty" Scott makes his debut about halfway through the episode, "Hegemony," which saw the Enterprise crew helping a colony under attack by the Gorn. After being played by the late James Doohan in the original show and Simon Pegg in the most recent movies, this latest take on the character is brought to life by Martin Quinn (Derry Girls), who is of Scottish origin.

"We've been talking about him for a while as a general idea," revealed co-showrunner and executive producer Henry Alonso Myers during an interview with TV Line. "As we were going into the finale, it suddenly became a weird, rare opportunity to introduce him for a lot of different reasons. What we’d like to do with the characters [from the original Star Trek series]… We don’t meet our understanding of who they are in that series, we meet who they are before. They don’t know who they will be, and they aren’t that person yet. They have some stuff to go through."

"We also had a great opportunity to cast someone who’s from Scotland," he added, "who can do that Scotty, but also who can go through all of the things that we want to see him go through before he becomes the person that we know."

Scotty has been confirmed to have a more significant role in season 3, but there's been some debate whether Strange New Worlds really needs another legacy character to join its crew.

I like this show. It is easily the best of modern-Trek and I could see it ending up being better than Voyager and Enterprise. But, dam, they really need to stop bringing in younger versions of TOS characters, since they are just handicapping themselves, since none of those characters can end up in a status quo different from what we saw in TOS.

It's already litte awkward that by the end of the series the more free-spirited nurse Chapel of this series has to become the more meek Spock-obsessed version from TOS.

I guessed who he was the second he opened his mouth. I love how they've incorporated the TOS cast so far (even if Paul Wesley's Kirk does bare an uncomfortable resemblance to Jim Carrey) and damn if that cliffhanger doesn't have me chomping at the bits for season 3...

It’s really too bad it’s only 10 episodes. With each character getting an episode and 7-8 main characters it doesn’t leave a lot of wiggle room.

Maybe they can boost it to 12-15 episodes for Season 3 and beyond?

Less than 5 articles for a whole season, we get 10 articles alone on projects that are getting put on hold lol

I'm hoping they introduce an original series character every season, and then in the end, the final shot is the entire crew heading off on the 5-year mission

So, Spock is the one who was a member of both crews
Uhura in Season 1
James T Kirk in Season 2
Scotty gets more focus in Season 3
Sulu in a potential Season 4
Bones in potential Season 5
And a very junior Chekhov in Season 6 as he didn't make a proper appearance in Trek until Season 2 of TOS, but it's implied he was on the ship already when he knew of Khan in Wrath of Khan (who made his appearance in Season 1 of TOS)
