Game Developer Hopes to Resurrect Cancelled Darth Maul Game

Like the Sith Lord himself in the animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Red Fly developer Dan Borth shares his plans to resurrect the cancelled Darth Maul video game and restore balance to The Force.

At last, he may have his revenge!  When Disney purchased Lucasfilm for a reported 4 billion dollars back in 2012, several projects, including the highly anticipated Star Wars 1313 and a Darth Maul videogame being developed by Red Fly Studio were unceremoniously canceled as EA assumed the role of primary game developer for the Star Wars franchise.  However, all hope may not be lost as developer Dan Borth revealed in a recent Reddit AMA that Red Fly is still working to bring the Darth Maul game to life.

We are currently working on a full next get demo of all things Maul to show the powers that be… We have been burning a candle for this game since it was killed in hopes we can get it turned back on again. IF that is to happen, we need to approach EA with a demo that will impress them. I think we have that or are close to it.

Bearing similarities to Starkiller in The Force Unleashed, players would assume the role of Sith apprentice Maul as he is molded by the Emperor into a lethal Dark Lord of the Sith.

We wanted to show what he went through to become a Sith. Showcase the torture the Emperor put him through. Show how you as the player would have made the same mistakes and ended up a Sith… Playing as a young Darth Maul, you would (hopefully) feel his pain and his rage as he was brutally exposed day by day by the Emperor.

Taking a page from Rocksteady and the Arkham series, Red fly planned to implement a system in which you capitalize on your opponents' fears to accomplish your missions.

The reverse fear mechanic had Maul using fear to control his opponents – you chose to drop down out of nowhere and behead a guard because you saw the rest of the guards were susceptible to fear, so when you did that they would scatter… some of them would run into walls and even wound or kill themselves.

So would you like to play a next generation Darth Maul video game? Leave your thoughts in the usual place.

So are they going to definitively release a specific time table of what books are cannon in the "new" Star Wars universe that ties into the movies and what will not?

The Clone Wars animated series did a pretty good job bringing justice back to Darth Maul after he was quickly disposed of in Episode 1. I would be glad to see them bring him back into the Star Wars universe as long as the game proved worthy. I am more excited about Battlefront than I have been about a game in a long time. Hoping it doesn't disappoint.

Darth Maul is one of my favourite STAR WARS villains, along with Darth Vader, Darth Bane, Boba Fett, Thrawn, and a few others.

If this game is canon, story driven and provides interesting insight to the character's history, I'd be interested in playing it.

However, I'd much prefer a next-gen sequel/reboot to STAR WARS: BOUNTY HUNTER, where you can play as Boba Fett.

@Darkknight2149

They are making a remaster of Bounty Hunter that will come out in the Vader special edition bundle of PS4 with Battlefront and some other old Star Wars games, and they will be on the store too digitally.
Not sure if they will be on other platforms too, but i'm looking forward to get BH too.

@Darth258

I already knew that but, thank you. What I meant is that they should a sequel/reboot with today's technology that allows us to play as Boba Fett (the original was released for the ps2 and featured Jango Fett).

Sorry, i misread.
I played the one on PS2 abut since nothing better seem to be in sight i'll just get the remaster...
Lucasarts closing and selling rights to others was a disgrace...
I was looking forward to Star Wars 1212 and Battlefront 3 and instead we get a shiny severed new Battlefront.
