OBI-WAN KENOBI Star Ewan McGregor Shares Season 2 Update And Recalls Negative Reaction To THE PHANTOM MENACE

Obi-Wan Kenobi star Ewan McGregor has shared something of a disheartening season 2 update while reflecting on how it felt to see the Star Wars prequels get "hammered" by critics when they were released.

It's a little hard to believe, but 2024 marks the 25th anniversary of Star Wars: The Phantom Menace. The movie was hated by many longtime fans when it arrived in theaters way back in 1999, but for a lot of kids at the time, it was their first experience of this Galaxy Far, Far Away on the big screen.

That might go some way in explaining why the consensus appears to have softened in recent years, with the entire prequel trilogy now boasting a sizeable fanbase who largely celebrate George Lucas’ work, not deride it.

Talking to Variety (via SFFGazette.com), Ewan McGregor admitted he was initially "very reluctant" to play the young Obi-Wan Kenobi. "It wasn’t a done deal for me. I didn’t think it was at all who I was. I believed, at that point, I was a Danny Boyle actor. 'The Beach' was more important and I meant it, it wasn’t flippant. I did ask a lot of people for advice."

"I am happy that I am this character for a lot of people, but when these films came out, they were so disliked. That was hard," he admits. "The first one was panned and we still had to make another two! It was weird to be in a film that was hammered."

Attack of the Clones didn't fare much better with critics, though Revenge of the Sith was largely well-received. Like the sequel trilogy, the movies spilt opinions and continue to do so to this day, with the overall feeling appearing to be that none of the newer efforts come close to A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi.

On the plus side, McGregor had a blast making Disney+'s Obi-Wan Kenobi TV series. "I would love to do the second season, but there’s no talk of it yet," the actor confirms before adding, "There is a lot going on at Disney."

Fans remain hopeful that a second season happens but, as far as we're aware, nothing is currently being actively developed at Lucasfilm. The studio has a great many other irons in the fire and, even if season 2 doesn't ultimately materialise, there's always a chance the Jedi could show up elsewhere!

Obi-Wan Kenobi begins 10 years after the dramatic events of Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith where Obi-Wan Kenobi faced his greatest defeat - the downfall and corruption of his best friend and Jedi apprentice, Anakin Skywalker, who turned to the dark side as evil Sith Lord Darth Vader.

The series stars Ewan McGregor, reprising his role as the iconic Jedi Master, and also marked the return of Hayden Christensen in the role of Darth Vader before he later reprised the role in Ahsoka. Joining the cast are Moses Ingram, Joel Edgerton, Bonnie Piesse, Kumail Nanjiani, Indira Varma, Rupert Friend, O’Shea Jackson Jr., Sung Kang, Simone Kessell, and Benny Safdie.

Obi-Wan Kenobi is directed by Deborah Chow and executive-produced by Kathleen Kennedy, Michelle Rejwan, Deborah Chow, Ewan McGregor and Joby Harold. All episodes are now streaming on Disney+.

The Phantom Menace is better than episode 8 and 9. Attack of The Clones is still better than episode 8 and 9

@bobevanz - I think the spirit of the prequels is better than the spirit of Episodes 8 and (especially) 9, but in hindsight episode 8 is a better film by most metrics than Attack of the Clones. Clones is so bad.

There are so many things I hate about Episode 8, and it's the first Star Wars movie I've ever left thinking "god, what have they done". But in a vacuum, I think it explored some interesting ideas and was visually stunning.

It's hard for me to reconcile, but while I enjoyed the prequels as a whole far more than I enjoyed the sequels (probably due to nostalgia), I think as a singular film Episode 8 is miles better than 2. There are like 3 things you could change/cut to make Episode 8 good. You'd have to rewrite Episodes 2 altogether to get anything I'd consider good.

Attack of the Clones is one of the worst movies ever made, relative to its budget.

@SheepishOne - episode 8 returned the Force to be spiritual thing, not scienfic. Compare the conversations on The Force between Luke and Rey vs Qui Gon and Anakin/Obi Wan and you'll see it's significantly better.

Not all the movie worked, but I felt that did really well.

@SheepishOne - Benecio del Toro's DJ was the best new character added to Star Wars since the original Trilogy. A lot of good things came from that movie. But Luke deserved better fan service.

@Itwasme - For all its faults, I really appreciated the return to spiritual mysticism in regards to the force. It always bothered me how the prequels looked at it like a blood quality thing, with the M-word being the indicator of how strong of a connection one shares with the force.

Some of the training with Rey was handled pretty well, as far as Luke's guided meditation goes. That was some of the most engaged I was with any of the sequels.

There's a lot of good in Episode 8. A lot of bizarre choices, but there's a good Star Wars movie buried in there.

@Baf - My biggest gripe about the sequel trilogy by far is the handling of Luke Skywalker. I think there's an interesting story to tell about his rejection of the force, but my God did they get it wrong. I was certain it was going to be revealed that he was temporarily possessed by Snoke or something when he attacked his nephew.

And people have argued that Luke projecting himself to Crait was this incredible feat to pull off and demonstrated Luke's strength...sure. It clearly took all he had to maintain the projection, and we haven't seen another Jedi do that. So it's cool, I guess. But as a final stand, it would have been so much more impactful to have Luke leave the island to physically confront his nephew, not out of rage, but out of care. Luke dying because he got tired will haunt my inner child forever.

Ultimately, I think Rian Johnson is a good filmmaker. But he doesn't understand Star Wars at all. JJ kind of gets it, but he doesn't know how to progress it.

@SheepishOne - Rain took the franchise to a place that he believed. The problem is he wrote selfishly and made a Star Wars story for himself. He kind of dumped on the fans neutering Luke in order to make Rey's revelations more impactful. Look, when you are in charge, you get to make the decisions. Still the best film of the three new ones.

I would say JJ gets the win overall, but he didn't really do anything new, he just carbon copied A New Hope.

@Baf - Completely agree on all points.

@SheepishOne - I don't like how they did the dirty on Luke, even Mark Hamill seemed to try and carefully voice his dissatisfaction with the portrayal.
But past that, I feel Rian and his crew did the dirty on multiple characters! Ackbar being unceremoniously killed, Finn's lacklustre character development, They way Rose was portrayed, the offhand way that Snoke was killed off, the lack of a reunion of the original characters (although I know JJ and Ford to a degree could be to blame for this), even Holdo's sacrifice, it just doesn't play well

I still think the biggest mistake of the film was to not have Ackbar do the kamikaze run so that Holdo could have persisted to the 3rd film! having her and Poe play off against each other as leaders of the resistance could have done so much to help each of their characters develop!

Ultimately choosing a divisive director to helm a film without any real set guidelines was a bad choice, which led to the scramble to try and "course correct" with the final installment...

@SheepishOne - They had some good ingredients, but it was mixed poorly. For me episode 7 was like Man of Steel: had the elements to setup a good sequel, following the characters more and investigating some interesting features (ex. Fin a former storm trooper who may have been force sensitive, more interaction with Finn and Rey, Luke discussing more or showcasing the Jedi order he tried to start). But ultimately it was a swing and a miss.
SheepishOne
SheepishOne - 2/2/2024, 12:10 PM
@Arthorious - I agree with you about episode 7. It felt like such a great setup, even if the basic plot was derivative of the original Star Wars. And I was able to forgive that, because Episode 7 had a lot of pressure to convince audiences that it wasn't the prequels and was, in fact, a return to form. Had Episodes 8 and 9 gone better, everyone would look back more fondly on 7.

The idea of following the story of a force sensitive storm trooper is such a an interesting one. But they goofed it.

At its core, Episode 7 should have been about two things. Bringing Rey, Poe, and Finn together. And planting the seeds to reunite Luke, Han, Leia, and Chewie. Han, Leia, and Chewie should have had a reunion at the end of 7, with no one dying. The First Order shouldn't be the Empire 2. They should be a small but growing faction of Empire supporters + Kylo Ren trying to revamp the sith.

Let Rey find Luke in Episode 8, and end that one with Luke reuniting with Han, Leia, and Chewie.

And then 9 can be whatever you want, as long as it's coherent and the dark side doesn't win.

The show was good. All other comments are Star Trek nerds!
I look forward to more Obi Wan. He’s probably the third best character in the franchise. I just hope they keep with the reluctant guardian thing and keep the sith/inquisitor/bounty hunters after him.

Wish they would recall the negative reaction to Reva before moving forward with this product. They can talk about Phantom Menace and draw the attention away all they want but I rather watch the prequels than this new shyte.

I liked the show personally , it had its issues but more worked for me then didn’t…

However I don’t think it needs or should get a S2 since it told the transitional story of Obi Wan from how he was at the end of Ep 3 to how we first see him in ANH.

Having him go on more missions in between would seem contrived imo unless it was just on Tattooine.

They should do a season 2 or a movie on Disney, not at the theater. I would love for him to try and still train Luke, but all Luke wants to do is fly his T-16 through Beggar’s Canyon and hang out with his friends Biggs, Fixer and Camie.

They make a bet on a race and lose. They can’t pay the debt to Jabba’s crew and Kenobi finds out late, but tries to fix the situation without revealing himself as a Jedi.

Maybe Chewbacca can help out the “old fossil” the Jedi helped their kind before, and you get a sense that he knows him a little bit as he goes right up to him in the original trilogy in Mos Eisley.

Boba Fett could capture Kenobi. There’s a story you could do, that incorporates the famous stories of young Luke Skywalker’s childhood.

He ought to feel A LOT BETTER now. Those last three Space Walrus Tit Milk Dumpster Fires make the Prequels look like The Godfather Trilogy.

Attack of the Clones is 45% great.

Revenge of the Sith is awesome.

The Phantom Menace is The Phantom Menace.

Everything since the last two minutes of Rogue One and 2.125 Seasons of The Mandalorian can eat Bantha Dick

The prequels were always great and I'm glad they are finally getting their rennaissance. The haters have never done anything for Star Wars than try to ruin it for everyone. I'm so tired of the constant "this is shit" and "that is shit"! The originals were full of weird bullshit, crappy dialogue, awful pacing, childish characters and lots of plot inconsistencies and I haven't been crying over that for the past 20 years.
