OPPENHEIMER Director Christopher Nolan Reveals Whether He'll Direct A JAMES BOND Or STAR WARS Movie

Oppenheimer director Christopher Nolan has looked ahead to his filmmaking future, teasing his possible interest in Star Wars and confirming he would leap at the chance to one day helm a James Bond movie...

Christopher Nolan has a stellar track record as a filmmaker, and all signs point to this weekend's Oppenheimer being a critical and commercial hit (achieving the latter is no easy feat with Barbie and Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One as competition).

Nolan arguably put himself on the map with The Dark Knight Trilogy and has since made a number of high-concept blockbusters, including sci-fi titles like Inception, Interstellar, and Tenet. However, there are those who would love to see him return to a named franchise.

During a recent interview with HugoDécrypte (via SFFGazette.com), the director was asked a series of "yes" or "no" questions, but there was only one he decided to say "Pass" to. That came when the director was quizzed on whether he would ever be interested in helming a Star Wars movie!

So, should we start getting excited?

It's certainly possible that Nolan has had a conversation with Lucasfilm, and it's hard to think of any filmmaker who wouldn't want to head into a Galaxy Far, Far Away should the opportunity present itself. The same could, of course, be said for James Bond.

During a separate chat with Happy Sad Confused, Nolan shared his interest in 007.

"The influence of those movies in my filmography is embarrassingly apparent. It would be an amazing privilege to do one," he admitted. "At the same time, when you take on a character like that you’re working with a particular set of constraints."

"You wouldn’t want to take on a film without being fully committed to what you bring to the table creatively. So as a writer, casting, everything - it’s a full package," Nolan added. "You’d have to be really needed and wanted in terms of bringing the totality of what you bring to a character. Otherwise, I’m very happy to be first in line to see whatever they do."

Whether it's Star Wars or James Bond, we definitely can't wait to see what Nolan does next. He has, however, confirmed that he's pausing work on any and all upcoming projects until the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes conclude.

Nolan is a big Bond fan and has said before he'd be interested in directing one.

Somewhat related: What if Christopher Nolan directed The Avengers?

@Feralwookiee - what if Nolan made the Avengers. I imagine it’d be like the Avengers. But with less of a color palette.

@slickrickdesigns - 🤣
That was a pretty terrible movie though and I think Nolan is a pretty awesome director.
That said, his more "grounded" approach certainly wouldn't fit with the MCU very well.

@Feralwookiee - the grounded approach might’ve worked with Cap the First Avenger.

@ComicBookPsycho - I did not even know this was released, thanks for the heads up. It's definitely seeming more likely that Venom is Harry Osborn, which should create interesting character interactions between everyone.

@ComicBookPsycho - “We are going to heal the world”

Interesting motivation for Harry and makes me wonder what path they’re going to take with the symbiote and its larger implications. Makes me think they’re going for less of the 616 “alien” storyline and more of the Ultimate storyline where the suit was intended to be a cure for cancer - and it was, but it had horrifying consequences.

Cannot wait.

Nolan: “No”

Both franchises would be extremely lucky to have Nolan direct one (or a trilogy) of their movies. Star Wars is clearly a lost cause, not because he's uninterested in the franchises itself, but rather because of the current state of its leadership. What Nolan and Kennedy want to do with the franchise is so far apart that there's no point in even trying to meet in the middle, much less getting full creative control. Star Wars desperately needs someone like Nolan on board, but Nolan absolutely does not need them. James Bond is different, I think there might be a path forward for Nolan, although I can't help but believe the right holders of Bond would want a trilogy of movies from him if they're going to let him cast the character. Unlike Star Wars however, I don't think the Bond franchise needs Nolan, although it would definitely benefit from his involvement. With all that said, Nolan will continue to make great movies, with or without these 2 franchises, and I can't wait to see them.

Pre-Casino Royale, it could have been fun for him to come in, make his own one-off Bond movie, which also would have functioned as the beginning of the era of Bond films starring the guy he picked for the role, and then the next director takes the baton from him. But now, when Craig-era already was so heavily influenced by his Batman movies, I would rather see the next era be tonally and stylistically different.

I don't think Christopher Nolan is the best director for every genre. I am sure he would do a great job on Star Wars, but I would rather see James Cameron's take on it over Nolan's.
Th3Batman
Th3Batman - 7/21/2023, 10:50 AM
@Forthas - If pineapple can work on pizza, so can Nolan on Star Wars. I do believe that the concept of Star Wars is just too far from what Nolan is known for, so a pass is what I'd expect him to say. With that said, it may be so far out of his comfort zone that he may find the challenge of pulling it off appealing. It's not happening now, that's for sure, but 10 years from now ? maybe, especially if (hopefully) there's new management over at Lucasfilm.
Forthas
Forthas - 7/21/2023, 11:03 AM
@Th3Batman - The thing is that Nolan is known for not using a lot of CGI...Star Wars requires it! Star wars is known for its light saber duels...Nolan's film have not had the best fight choreography. Star Wars in many ways is designed to appeal to children (even though Andor and Rogue One kind of broke that mold)... and Nolan does adult (not meaning porn) drama. If he did do a star Wars film I am sure it would be the best ever made, but I am really interested in how James cameron would tackle it as CGI heavy, child friendly, action oriented films are his thing.

@Forthas -

"The thing is that Nolan is known for not using a lot of CGI...Star Wars requires it!"

Star Wars requiring so much CGI is exactly why I'd be interested in him directing it, as he'd replace all that with practical effects instead. I can't help but think it'd be a game changer for the genre if he pulled it off.

"Nolan does adult (not meaning porn) drama."

Porn mixed with interstellar level of storytelling. In some alternate universe, this is a thing that won best picture for Nolan.

FinnishDude - 7/21/2023, 11:31 AM
@Forthas - I feel neither Cameron nor Nolan is "whimsical" enough for Star Wars. Like, is hard for me to imagine them featuring Star Wars-style puppets and guys in costumes in their projects.
Forthas
Forthas - 7/21/2023, 11:47 AM
@FinnishDude - Of course! But I think Rogue One and Andor are trying to elevate the subject matter. The silly puppets and cartoonish characters are a drag on what would otherwise be the most epic franchise.

@bobevanz - insanely jealous. If it’s iMAX, then a head’s up - there’s no trailers. Least as far as i’m aware, since the roll of film is 11 miles long, too long for any trailers to be added. Report back on what u think if you can!

@Cap1 - That's partially true, most IMAX Oppenheimer showings have trailers. Only IMAX 70MM showings have no trailers, which are only playing at 19 theaters across the United States.

Here's another thing to consider about Star Wars: The damage that's been done to the brand. When Nolan took over the batman franchise, it was coming off of one movie (Batman & Robin), and he was just at the start of his career. He had everything to gain and very little to lose. Nowadays however, Nolan is a household name who can make whatever he wants, whenever he wants, for any price he wants. The Star Wars brand is far more damaged than Batman was back then, so if you're Nolan, would you want to waste your time on what seems like a lost cause at this point ?
Forthas
Forthas - 7/21/2023, 11:22 AM
@Th3Batman - That is spot on! Where I would LOVE to see Nolan go next is Dune. In fact if I were the producers of the Dune films I would have Villenueve do a third film and then try to have Nolan take over for his own trilogy. Hopefully they would set it beyond the timelines of the Dune books and he would be free to develop his own story and further build out that world.
Th3Batman
Th3Batman - 7/21/2023, 11:26 AM
@Forthas - When it's all said and done, I think the current Dune trilogy will go down as one of the best trilogies on the market. If I'm Nolan, I don't know if I want to jump into a franchise that's basically been perfected by someone else. He'd do a great job, don't get me wrong, but would he bring something truly new that's worth his time ? I can't help but feel it'd have a "been there, done that" vibe to it.
Forthas
Forthas - 7/21/2023, 11:43 AM
@Th3Batman - Well I think the difference would be that Denis is adapting already canonized material. Nolan would be creating new canon, new characters etc. Given that it is Warner Brothers involved these morons would just reboot it for no reason and put James Gunn in charge to make sure it fails. But sure, if Nolan were just going to adapt new books to the screen then yeah...what is the real point?
mountainman
mountainman - 7/21/2023, 2:22 PM
@Forthas - Nolan could actually handle how cerebral and weird the series gets after the second book.

I like this idea!

I certainly wouldn’t mind Nolan being involved with either of those franchises but I’m not clamoring for it , atleast when it comes to Bond anymore

Since the Craig era was so influenced by his take on Batman , I feel like I have already seen a Nolan-esque Bond and I would rather they go different tonally for the next iteration.

Even with SW i feel like he would do something akin to Rogue One or Andor tonally so since we are getting that already , I don’t know what he could bring to that though I would be more intrigued with doing that then Bond as of now.

Anyway excited to see Oppenheimer tomorrow , his last couple of movies or so have left me cold to various extents so hopefully this is a return to form for him to me
