Since Star Wars: TFA has come out it has blown most of our minds and shattered several Box Office records, it also left us with more questions than the final season of Lost... but in a good way! The one question that is causing the most discussion is, who is Rey's Family? With most either saying Luke Skywalker is her father or Obi-Wan Kenobi is her grandfather... I ask why not BOTH?

Before episode IV

Yes why not the Daughter of Luke and Granddaughter of Kenobi? What if, like many have speculated Obi-Wan Kenobi did find love while in exile? Perhaps traveling off Tatoine to help the Rebel Alliance and fathering a daughter about 5 years older than Luke. Which he either had limited contact with due to the fact that he was Luke's protector/in exile, or which he had no knowledge of. Now there will be a plethora of people saying but what about the Jedi vow of celibacy? I think due to the fact that the Jedi order is all but gone Obi-Wan gets a Hall Pass. Also this sets up for a Kenobi movie starring Ewan!!

After episode VI

With the Legend of the last Jedi, Luke Skywalker, spreading through the galaxy a powerful Force sensitive Kenobi Jnr searches for him to train her and restart the Jedi Order. Luke discovers her heritage and agrees to her request. They travel the Galaxy for years searching for force sensitives to join the New Order as Kenobi becomes a Jedi, like her father before her. Soon they find themselves in love and eventually have a child, a daughter, Rey.
So where is Rey’s mother???
Well since the Star Wars universe loves to repeat itself here is my theory…

Before episode VII

With the appearance/reappearance of Snoke (Plegeuis), Luke and Kenobi Jnr get wind of his plan and try to stop him, however he has already corrupted one of their young apprentices Ben Solo. Who turns on them and with the help of the ‘Knights of Ren’ decimates the new order. In an attempt to save Rey, Kenobi Jnr faces the ‘Knights of Ren’ but is overpowered and struck down. Luke Flees with Rey, believing his love to be dead, he hides his daughter on Jakku with Lor San Tekka there to keep her alive, while he goes into exile.

After episode VII

As we know Rey has found Luke now at the end of TFA, Luke will tell her he is her father and what happened to send them into exile. Now with all this talk of a new female villain being cast, is it possible that she will be Rey’s mother and one of the Knights of Ren? Brought to Snoke by Kylo, corrupted and turned to the dark side… forcing Rey to a similar fate of her father and having to face her mother?

Like I said Star Wars universe likes to repeat itself…

Interesting theory. Much of it is speculation. But it would make for an interesting connection to Darth Vader. And this time it would be the daughter that would have to face the mother. I like it.

I thought she was the daughter of Max Rebo and Oola, created during a drunken night at Jabba's Palace?

I could get with this idea although if there was another force sensetive person...why would Yoda and Obi-Won think that Luke was the "last hope." I think it would be better if she (Rey) was related to Qui Gon. It would not be too much of a stretch to think at one point he disobeyed the Jedi rule since that is how he was characterized.

@Forthas

I always thought Luke was the 'last hope' as he would become powerful enough to defeat Vadar and the Emperor... I mean even without Luke there I am sure force sensitive people still existed, they were just never trained so couldn't really be counted as a hope to save the Galaxy...

The way Qui Gon was depicted I am sure that man fathered enough children to start his own Jedi academy, it is why he is awesome!!!

@R2T2

Actually you are right! The new Star Wars movie basically staes it. If Maz Kanata is as old as the say then she was ...apparently...a force sensetive person who would have been around during that time.

Great thought provoking article!

You can't just give Obi-Wan Kenobi a "hall pass" on the celibacy thing simply because all the other Jedi are dead.

He still believes in the Jedi Order and their teachings. He is probably the most straight and narrow follower of the Jedi Order. There's no way he would have broken that "rule".

@CorndobBurglar I don't know about that. You make a solid point about Obi-Wan's dedication, but in all of the EU material I have read, the Jedi code didn't seem to have any laws that were strictly about celibacy. From what I gathered, the reason they weren't allowed to be in relationships was more due to the idea that, like Anakin, they would put the good of their loved one over the good of the galaxy. Maybe you know of specific examples where they say sex is explicitly forbidden, but I wasn't aware of them.

There was even an arc where Qui Gonn fell in love with a blind jedi (i know he isn't as much of a boy scout as Obi-Wan) and they were debating whether it was wrong. I would think that given the context of the movie, and of course depending on what happens in a theoretical Obi-Wan spinoff, they could make a convincing point for how he decides that his relationship wouldn't detract from his duties to protect Luke.

I think Obi-Wan fell in love wwith somebody during the Clone Wars show, so it's not like he doesn't have feelings that way either.

In my brain "Star Wars: TFA" is interpreted as "Star Wars: The First Avenger"

Good article, now I really want to see Obi-Wan in a sequel to Hall Pass.

Yes! I was just telling some friends this idea a few days ago!

I'm glad that I'm not the only one who's thought it would be a cool legacy thing.

But...what if we were to take it one step further...
What if Obi-wan's daughter was to be a force-sensitive based on a character who was already in the Expanded Universe?

What if Obi-wan Kenobi's daughter was the new-canon version...of Mara Jade?

It wouldn't be very difficult to do, just imagine:

Like you said, 5 or so years after the formation of the Empire, Obi-wan has a moment of weakness, or falls away from the Jedi code for a while, feeling depressed and hopeless.

He meets a girl he loves (Like Satine in Clone Wars) and they hook up. He doesn't reveal his Jedi status because in the eyes of most galactic citizens, Jedi are now considered MASSIVE criminals and traitors. They have a daughter. However, Obi-wan finally realizes he has a duty and responsibility to the future of the galaxy in protecting Luke and decides he must become a steadfast Jedi once again. (Maybe Yoda could force-project himself across the galaxy for an intervention? IDK. :P )

He finally reveals to his new wife that he is a Jedi, however, she DOES NOT take it well, freaks out, and runs away, taking their young daughter with her!
Now, with truly nothing left, Obi-wan goes back to life on Tatooine, spending his days becoming the Jedi he used to be.
(This could help explain why Obi-wan didn't try to teach Luke or anything for years beyond "Uncle Owen not allowing it". Maybe Obi-wan NEEDED those years to build himself back up, and become the Jedi Master he once was before he could help anyone else.)

Meanwhile, as the years pass, Obi-wan's young daughter by the name of Mara Jade begins to demonstrate force abilities. Her mother, fearful, gives her up to the Empire. She is trained and becomes a powerful Dark Side user, eventually becoming the Emperor's Hand, blah, blah, blah, insert whatever Expanded Universe stuff you want here, etc.

Finally, the Empire falls, and Mara Jade is now left to wander the galaxy. At some point after Episode 6, force ghost Obi-wan, now aware of Mara Jade, approaches Luke and asks him for a favor. He admits his failings in life and asks if Luke would do one great favor for him: find his daughter and attempt to redeem her as he did for Vader.

Luke accepts, he and Mara eventually meet, long story short, she turns to the light, she and Luke get hitched, and while Luke begins a new Jedi academy, he and Mara have a daughter...Rey.

However, like you say, everything crumbles away. Ben Solo falls to the dark side, becomes Kylo Ren, kills all the new Jedi learners, and ultimately kills Mara Jade in battle, but Rey is spared. Luke is heartbroken by this loss, and uncertain of what to do. The First Order paints a target on his head, forcing him into exile so that he can find a way to rebuild what was lost. In order to protect Rey, he leaves her with Lor San Tekka on Jakku and attempts to find the ancient origins of the Jedi to help him learn what to do next.

Some years go by...

Cue Episode VII.

It'll be a bigger surprise if they reveal Rey as a Kenobi than a Skywalker because everyone already believes Rey is Luke's daughter.
