STAR WARS And AVATAR Movies Receive New Release Dates...Taking Us Into The Next Decade!

Believe it or not, studios are now dating movies in the 2030s, and fans of Star Wars and Avatar have a lot to look forward to in the next five years and beyond. Find everything you need to know here...

The Marvel Cinematic Universe isn't the only franchise to be hit by some major delays because Disney just found new homes for a number of upcoming sci-fi projects.

As we first reported on SFFGazette.com, even though Avatar 3 had been slated for a December 20, 2024 debut, Marvel Studios' Thunderbolts taking that date means it's now heading our way on December 19, 2025.

As a result, Avatar 4 has shifted to December 21, 2029 and Avatar 5 is taking aim at a December 19, 2031 release.

That's right, studios have just started dating movies into the next decade!

The reason for the long wait when it comes to the fourth and fifth instalments is that they haven't been shot yet. Avatar 3, on the other hand, is already in post-production, but James Cameron and company now have even more time to get that where they want it. Oh, and if you want us to crunch the numbers, what's expected to be the filmmaker's final Avatar movie will be released 22 years after the original 2009 blockbuster.

In terms of Star Wars, an untitled project has been set for December 18, 2026. A previously dated movie has shifted from December 19, 2025 to May 22, 2026, so that means we're getting two in the same year, the first time that's happened since 2017 (Solo: A Star Wars Story and Star Wars: The Last Jedi).

We're getting another untitled Star Wars movie on December 17, 2027, and common sense says these are the three announced at Star Wars Celebration back in April. Those are heading our way from filmmakers Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy, James Mangold, and Dave Filoni.

Finally, Fede Álvarez's Alien reboot is going to receive a theatrical release (unlike Predator reboot Prey which debuted on Hulu) as it's been set for August 16, 2024.

There's a lot to digest here, but it's going to be a very busy few years for the genre. Of all the movies listed here, though, it's Star Wars we'd most like to see get back on the right track and actually stick to those release dates.

The writer’s strike is going to last a very long time which is why these movies are being moved and projects are being cancelled.

As if people aren’t already bored of Star Wars and the MCU….these extended delays are not going to help the situation at all.

Marvel made a huge mistake going multiverse so quickly. They should have gone with grounded superheroes and villains after such a grandiose Endgame.

Focusing on the earth and how the criminal underworld and tyrannical leaders fought for control of the planet in the five year aftermath after the snap would have made a great phase 4.

Dr. Doom would have risen to power. The Kingpin could have flexed his muscle bigger.
Kraven the Hunter pursuing Soider-Man.
Daredevil, a better made She Hulk, Hawkeye, Shang Chi without all of the Chinese fantasy world crap, Moon Knight.

They should have gone small and localized it to earth and the biggest villain should have been Mephisto who they never even fight. They just have to outwit him.

@TyrantBossMedia - I personally think they are doing them a favor, this is forcing them to take the break they should've taken years ago.

@TheHumanSpider2 - Perhaps, but they have already damaged the brand so badly.
Had they taken the break after Endgame for about 5 years then we’d be better off.

With all due respect, is Cameron even going to be around by 2031? how old is he?

@TheHumanSpider2 - He’s only 68. He’ll be 76 in 2031.

Is anyone really keeping track of a film slated for 8years from now?

I have a feeling that Fiege will be gone before we even see Secret Wars and Kang Dynasty will be dropped all together.

Hopefully I’m alive for all of this. Scary to think about the future and these dates and where I will be.

Looking at these dates gives me anxiety. Where would I be in 2028? Yikes!

There was a time I would dread the wait time between SW movies but they have been soooooo bad I don't care anymore. When they come out they come out.

I don't care.
Didn't watch Avatar 2 and won't watch another Star Wars Film as long as Kathleen Kennedy is alive/cloned.

I only care about Thor 5.

So if I got this right, it's:

12/24: Thunderbolts
12/25: Avatar 3
5/26: Star Wars
12/26: Star Wars
12/27: Star Wars
12/29: Avatar 4
12/31: Avatar 5

Yeah, that makes no sense to me. Why not just alternate between Avatar and Star Wars movies in the Decembers in 2024, 2027, 2029 and 2026, 2028 and 2030 respectively?

"almost $6 billion thru 2 films. Yes, very cursed!" - @ThorArms

It took you almost half of thirty years just to make that comment. You might not even be alive by the next time the next movie comes out to even make another comment like that to a user like @grif.

No one foresaw a pandemic, no one foresaw a strike. You gotta live in order to make those billions. Not so easy to do so.
