Star Wars Producer Admits He's "Not A Fan" Of The Prequels

Vulture have an exclusive clip from Lionsgate's documentary The People vs. George Lucas. In it producer Gary Kurtz speaks about why he feels the three prequels to the original Star Wars were lacking..

Gary Kurtz was a producer on what is generally regarded as the best Star Wars movie The Empire Strikes Back. In this clip over at Vulture, which is part of the special features on The People Vs George Lucas home release, Kurtz reveals why he thinks Lucas's three prequels disappointed him.

There is no embed unfortunately so click on the image below to view the short clip..

Basically he concurs with a lot of Star Wars fans: while technically and visually sound the movies fell way short in the story and character department. He says that all three movies have great moments, but that he wishes they had more character development and substance. He then compares them to Raiders Of The Lost Ark saying they have a lot of action and are held together by story threads that work..on the surface.

Well, I agree on the prequels but lets not drag Raiders down with em! What do you guys think? You agree or disagree with Kurtz's take?

The People Vs George Lucas comes to DVD October 25th

Because the prequel trilogy is boring. my favourite one is Episode III. Thats probably it. Episode II The Clone Wars was so boring i sleped through the whole thing. Nothing beats the 1st trilogy though.

hated episode 2. episode 1 had one of the best fights (Maul vs Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon), but episode 3 had Obi-Wan vs Anakin: the ultimate battle between best friends, brothers, and it was just awesome. everything else, no

though Ewan McGregor WAS Obi-Wan!!

the prequels are terrible, if you think they are even half way decent, watch the Plinkett reviews on Red Letter Media. They are really long, but incredibly well done. Their is plenty of entertainment to make the long ass reviews watchable.

I saw the second three when they came out in 1977(?), showing my age here, and to this day I love those the best. I knew at somepoint he would have to tell the begining of the story but I hoped he would sorround himself with the same bunch that helped him on "A New Hope", "Empire" and "Jedi".

I wouldn't compare Raiders to the first three SW movies at all! Radiers kicked all three prequels butts many times over with solid story, action and great acting! Nothing against Ewan McGregor and Liam Neeson and the rest but Hayden was horrible in them....

Okay, anyone who says that "if you like the prequels you're not a TRUE Star Wars fan" (yes Azazel1, I'm talking to you) is a moron! George Lucas created Star Wars, he intended the prequels to happen and they did. Also, what ever HE says is canon, IS CANON. End of story! That includes BOTH TRILOGY'S and even BOTH CLONE WARS series'. Even if we do not like them, we shouldn't care if someone else does or make stupid comments about it like above. I for one enjoy the Prequels (which were made in MY era of childhood), but LOVE the Original Trilogy better!

the only good things about the prequels are the lightsabre duels, that is it.

episode two would of been better if jango fett had killed jar jar binks.

Plinkett is a moron that doesnt know anything about making movies. You can dislike the movies but dont look to this fool as your rally cry.
Newsflash: Not all movies have a protagonist. They usually do but some dont.

All the complaining hasn't stopped people from buying every new version of these movies that comes out.
No wonder Lucas doesn't care what we think.

i didnt think the prequels were that bad per se, buy when you compare them to the series they're part of, they fall short and disappoint.

But yeah, no need to drag Raiders down too, I like that film almost as much as the original Star Wars trilogy.

Ok let me just say that The Prequels didn't totally suck. My thing is this was suppose to be the Sith's coming out party to the rest of the galaxy, and basically instead of focusing on the Sith they decided to focus on Jar Jar and his clumsiness and Anakin and his [frick]ing podrace. I wanted to see more of the relationship between Maul and Darth Sidious and how they got to where they were.

Roach, Plinkett takes the piss but he does know what he is taking about, he just doesn't take his critiques too seriously and they are all the better for it. Anyway those movies not having a protagonist is just one point out of hundreds he brings up. They do have protagonists he just means they don't have an real; central one..an archetype like Luke Skywalker if you will.

I saw TPM when I was about 17 or 18 I think and I have never been more excited for a movie in my life. I sat there in awe as the classic credits rolled. I noticed straight off how wooden McGregor was but let it go. Then Jar Jar, then Padme, then the awful kid..then it just descended into shitsville. Yes there were great action scenes but who gives a shit when everything else is so badly done I left eh cinema not sure what I had actually witnessed, I thought someone was playing a joke and teh real movie was still to be screened.

Let's get it straight- NO ONE can defend the prequels. Episode 1 & 2 are embarrassing. 3 has it's flaws (NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!) but the positives far outweigh the negatives. After all, the Anakin vs Obi Wan fight at the end was BY FAR the best lightsaber duel in the entire saga. I would go so far to put Revenge of the Sith on a par with Return of the Jedi.

And you guys are correct, Hayden Christensen is one of the driest most wooden actors on the planet, falling in love is one thing, but turning VADER into whiny emo bitch who cried more times than Peter Parker in Spiderman 3 was just inexcusable.
WellDrawn
WellDrawn - 10/17/2011, 2:39 PM
In fact, the biggest crime in 3 was how tame Lucas made Grievous - anyone who saw the original cartoon Clone Wars series knows the Greivous was a badass like no other.

I enjoy the prequel series a lot. Episode I and Episode III are two of my favorite movies ever. Episode II was pretty good, but got bogged down in so much mediocrity. However, I will agree with Kurtz - the OT definitely has more of a classic feel that the prequel trilogy couldn't ever hope to have, which is why Episode V is the best of the entire saga, always and forever. But he did make one other mistake - comparing the prequel trilogy to "Raiders of the Lost Ark". It's like, the freaking Episode V of the Indy movies! Such a great movie, even today! When will people begin to realize that they can't come into my house and start talking trash? lol jk

If you dont like the prequels you dont like Star Wars.

Cliche Star Wars fan reviews in a nutshell:

Episode I: Horrible.
Episode II: Horrible.
Episode III: Teetering on Horrible.
Episode IV: Child defining cinema until Greedo shot first.
Episode V: Perfection until they inserted Ian McDiarmid despite the fact that it made total sense.
Episode VI: Weak sauce especially with those ewoks.

So your traditional cliche hackneyed Star Wars fan doesnt even like 4 of the 6 movies and is in constant bitch mode about the evolution of the 2 he does still "like". Moral of story is that "true" Star Wars fans hate Star Wars by and large. Who wants to be like them?

@ panathatube - Read my post two posts up. You're a Star Wars fan I suppose. I dont expect you to like all of them but for chrissakes at least like the MAJORITY of them. These lame Star Wars fans cant even find it in their heart to like even HALF of the movies. and it's not like the James Bond series folks. It's only six movies and they detest them as much as they claim to love them.

No Expanded Universe does not count.

The basic problem with the prequels is that they have too many Jedi. Conceptually, Jedi are cool. In practice, personality-wise, they are boring. You have to have great supporting characters like Han Solo for them to interact with. Make movies all about Jedi? And support them with lame-o's like Jar Jar? Recipe for failure.

The basic problem with the prequels is that they suck. Episode I is boring and childish. Episode II is melodramatic. Episode III is a trainwreck.

Right, I don't like Star Wars..except I do..3 of them, not the other 3. You seem to think we have some obligation as fans to like whatever we are given just because it may carry the Star Wars title. A bad movie is a bad movie, if you like it it doesn't make it good, all it means is you like a bad movie.

Holy crap this is always blown way out of proportion, all 6 movies a great, were IV-VI better, yes, now please can we move on with our lives, I like Star Wars more than most and even I can't warrant a decade long discussion over this, wow please let it go.
