Why the Star Wars Live-Action TV Series is on hold?

Lucas explains why the Star Wars Live-Action series is taking so long.

"Last year, George Lucas said the long-discussed Star Wars Live-Action series was on hold, stating that the difficulty was in making the series for a reasonable price. This week, in a new interview with Attack of the Show, Lucas was asked about the status of the series, and replied, "It sits on the shelf. We have 50 hours [written], and we're just waiting to figure out a different way of making movies – a different technology that we can use that will make it economically feasible to shoot the show. Right now, it looks like the Star Wars features, but we have to figure out a way of making it for about a tenth the cost of the features, because it's television. And we're working toward that and we're continuing to work toward that and we will get there at some point."

"It's not clear what Lucas is referring to when he talks about a "different way of making movies" exactly – new, affordable special FX techniques? More realistic digital sets? But the Star Wars creator does go on to say, "It's just a very difficult process and obviously, when we do sort of figure this problem out, it will dramatically affect a lot of movies, because a lot of movies, features now, that are costing 150, 200 million dollars, we'll suddenly be able to make them for 50 or 60 million dollars."

"Lucas said some similar things about the challenges of making a live-action Star Wars series when I interviewed him last September, but was confident it would happen eventually, as you can see below."

Looking forward to the show, hopefully Episodes VII-IX, and the 3-D re-releases (if they don't mess up the post-conversion). I need a bit more Star Wars in my life, to be honest.

Just please dont'start with stuff we've seen over & over again. I think its just an excuse. Hell Star Trek has had many series. So what is the problem LUCAS?

As long as this isn't another one of Lucas' money making schemes, then they could just shoot in a desert somewhere and say it's Tattooine. If they need lightsabres, hell theres kids who do those effects using free software at home *cough*Star Wars Kid*cough* so it can't be that expensive, and as long as they use the force sparingly.
The cost of effects from the 70s will have lowered by now, so use those methods instead of CG heavy, then you get the advantage of the nostalgia tied to the original trilogy.

@Spock - Exactly! If Star Trek, BSG, Stargate, Babylon 5, to name a few, can have successful tv shows what the hell is Lucas' problem? He acts like he's trying to do some ground breaking BS. Just give us an hour long show with space battles, action, etc. just like those other shows have. It's not rocket science.

Heres a thought on how to cut costs George, USE MODELS!! You know, that way you don't have to spend millions on digital animation and ships as well as aliens could look cool and real again. ****ing 5 chinned frog.

IF thery were able to make season of babylon 5 and Star Trek they can bring star wars to TV. Its not like they dont have the props in storage. And the actors would be less exppensive than one Stargate Atlantis episode. Advertisers would pay out of the roof for the that spot. Its a lot of BS, IMO.

@Spock- Notice how all of those shows were cancelled because of their sizable budgets? Perhaps if Trek had exercised more foresight and innovation (as Lucas is doing) we'd still have some Trek on the air.
