Justin Lin No Longer Helming Terminator; Will The Rights Revert Back To James Cameron?

It has been revealed that Fast Five director Justin Lin has been forced to drop out of the upcoming Terminator movie, although he may be back! And what's all this about the rights reverting back to James Cameron?! Find out here...

Firstly, here is an excerpt from the report over at Deadline explaining the latest development in the planned Terminator movie from Justin Lin.

Things are starting to move on The Terminator franchise, but a plan by rights owner Megan Ellison and Arnold Schwarzenegger to put the first of two pictures in production for fourth quarter of 2012 has forced director Justin Lin to drop out. But borrowing the film’s signature phrase "I’ll be back," Lin has left the door open to a return if Ellison and Schwarzenegger will wait until he completes the sixth installment of The Fast and the Furious franchise.

The site goes on to reveal that Lin has been working closely with Schwarzenegger and Ellison in order come up with a story for what would be a conclusion to the battle between the human race and Skynet. However, with no script or screenwriter even attached, and the current lack of studio involvement, the movie may be on hold for a good while yet. However, there's another complication...

One of the caveats involved in the rights deal with Pacificor (which spent $29.5 million to win the rights in bankruptcy court) is that certain rights revert back to Cameron due to a stipulation in copyright law that if you assign your rights, you get them back in 35 years. Cameron assigned his rights to Hemdale, and the North American rights will revert back to him in 2018. Even that part of the story has gotten intriguing: while Cameron washed his hands of the Terminator franchise years ago, his close friend Schwarzenegger has dragged him into a brainstorming meeting or two, even though he is not officially involved.

Well, that's very interesting! While it's far more likely that they'll rush out something before 2018, would you like to see the franchise back in the hands of James Cameron? And should they wait for Justin Lin to direct another Fast and Furious movie, or hire somebody else? Be sure to share your thoughts in the usual place!

Well, I think they shouldn't rush a T5 and 6 and if the rights revert back to Cameron in 2018, so be it. Maybe he'll have production continue and maybe Justin Lin will be done and over with the Fast and the Furious by then.

I liked all the Terminator films. Each brought something new to the franchise. Hopefully this is made soon.

Why would Cameron want to make another film, even if he owned the rights. He's done with the franchise. And...like grif said, they will get a film (or two) made by 2018.

what they should do is continue where The Sarah Connor Chronicles tv show left off. And if the rights are reverting back to Cameron, that would make sense because he helped out a bit on the show.

@ecksmanfan

Uh, for an "AVATAR 4: Arrival of Skynet" movie of course, duh! Spoiler Alert! The T-2000s die during an underWATER chase in Pandora's abyss from the freezing temperatures.

man they might as well hang it up because arnold it the terminator and he is old and saggy. They should have stopped at terminator 2 because the rest was trash!

As far as I can tell, certain parts of the rights will revert back to Cameron in 2018 regardless of whether or not they make a movie before then.

Make another with Bale like they had planned involving the t800 underground and the search for the materials that created the t1000. They had better plans before lin

I still think a sequel to "Salvation" should be made, and get Joss Whedon to direct it!

This can be done, and done WELL....WITH Arnold, if they act fast (not rushed, fast)

Arnold has MAYBE 6 years of FEASIBLE ability left in him....if he hit the gym and started training again he would be T-101 fit in no time.....

He could do MAYBE 3 more movies to finish out HIS time in the franchise if they start NOW...

As far as waiting until 2018 just to get Cameron on it, [frick] THAT GUY! We can have a good Terminator movie without him.
OptimusPrimeTime
OptimusPrimeTime - 9/20/2011, 8:05 PM
And I agree with @@AutobotCommander

Make a sequel to Salvation...

Get rid of McG.....
Keep Bale.....
Bring in Arnold.....
Have Joss Whedon corral everyone......

PERFECT!

theangrytroll - 9/20/2011, 8:19 PM
No matter who the director is, Arnold is too old to do these movies now. A Terminator movie without Arnold just doesn't work. The abomination that was Terminator:Salvation proved that. These need to end.

Cameron had nothing to do with The Sarah Connor Chronicles except he was credited for the creation of the characters.

i would say yeah give it back to cameron, but what good would that do if he turned his back from Terminator. oh well, i would have loved to see what lin had to offer in the Terminator franchise. time will tell.

Awesome news that Lin is gone.....now they just need to get someone good on board.

But for those who want Joss Whedon.....get real, people. The guy has never directed anything worth a damn. The only reason why he got brought up is because he is directing The Avengers and everyone around here is on an Avengers high. However, just because he is directing The Avengers doesn't mean a thing. Realistically, it's more than likely going to suck (you can quote me on that one)......so it would be a shame for him to ruin this series as well.

Terminator needs a fresh new face but someone who is a truly good filmmaker. I still say either Neill Blomkamp or David O'Russell.

Salvation sequel -and while McG did mess with continuum a little (it is a time travel movie after all and things can change due to interactions and events in the past, changing the future) he did a good job of directing and putting in place a story that I would like to see continued and concluded.

They should return the rights back to Harlan Ellison.BAM!
Cameron the most unoriginal man alive.

There's a reason these films have been making less and less box office since Cameron left it. It's because they've been trying to force a film franchise out of something that was never meant to be a franchise in the first place. Cameron ended the story with T2, he even had a definitive end sequence which is on the alternate version of the DVD! Just stop making these already, the last two films were totally stupid contrived plots for the brain-dead!

I really liked Salvation, although Rise of the machines was enjoyable but was just a piece of shit. Who the [frick] would actually cheat the mythology of the 2nd movie? I say make an sequel to Salvation. Just please don't bring back Sam Worrington back, keep bale in it. I won't mid either if they made another one with arnie, only if they use the technology like how tron legacy did with Jeff Bridges.

tricklove187:
"Terminator Versus Robocop", that´s an awesome movie jut waiting to happen. Loved the comic by Frank Miller and Walt Simonson, it connects the two series perfectly: Murphy unwillingly helps Skynet to get a living conscience, brilliant!
