TERMINATOR GENISYS Star Matt Smith Recalls Thinking "What The F*** Is Going On?" While Shooting First Scene

After directing Thor: The Dark World, filmmaker Alan Taylor moved on to Terminator Genisys. Released in 2015, it's widely considered the worst movie in the sci-fi franchise's storied history. Meant to serve as a reboot, it introduced a new timeline created when Skynet attempted to kill Sarah Connors as a child.

In the movie's big twist, we learned that Skynet had transformed Jason Clarke's John Connor into a Terminator-hybrid. Joining him in the cast were Emilia Clarke as Sarah, Jai Courtney as Kyle Reese, and Arnold Schwarzenegger as a T-800 dubbed "Pops."

Despite being heavily featured in bizarre promo photos, House of the Dragon star Matt Smith made a relatively minor appearance as the advanced T-5000 Terminator who embodies Skynet, and it sounds like shooting his scenes was a bemusing experience for the British actor.

"My rather brief time in that world. It was quite strange, you know, when I [was] filming," Smith says in the video below (via SFFGazette.com). "My first day was with Arnold Schwarzenegger and he was in just, like, a top half and green spandex, like green screen trousers. I was like, 'What the f*ck is going on, man?' I’m playing a computer who...It was quite bizarre."

Despite being slated by critics (Terminator Genisys has 26% on Rotten Tomatoes), the movie was a moderate box office success. It grossed $440.6 million on a $155 million budget, an improvement over its predecessors.

The largely negative response to Genisys prompted Paramount to softly reboot the Terminator franchise again with 2019's Dark Fate. While that effort fared far better with critics, it earned only $261.1 million worldwide.

Clarke, who had worked with Taylor on several episodes of Game of Thrones, said in 2018, "He was not the director I remember. He didn't have a good time. No one had a good time."

The actress also admitted she was "relieved" not to be asked back for a sequel and revealed that production went so poorly that word spread to the nearby Fantastic Four set (which also had its fair share of issues under director Josh Trank's watch).

However, Terminator Genisys was such a mess, members of the Fantastic Four crew started wearing jackets which read, "At least we’re not on 'Terminator.'"

You can watch the full interview with Smith in the player below.

The year is 2029. John Connor, leader of the resistance continues the war against the machines. At the Los Angeles offensive, John’s fears of the unknown future begin to emerge when TECOM spies reveal a new plot by SkyNet that will attack him from both fronts; past and future, and will ultimately change warfare forever.

They should have just continued the Terminator Salvation trilogy with Bale, it had potential imo

@Matchesz - Agreed. I thought Salvation was original and a fresh start as a sequel. If you look at all the other Terminator movies, they are just a copy of the first one with some changes. Salvation took a different route.

@Matchesz - That's the one I hate the most.

T3

Salvation

@Matchesz - the reception when Salvation came out is pretty much the same one both Genysis and Dark Fate got. Folks were not feeling it even with Bale at the height of his Batman fame.

@Matchesz - Nah, future war trilogy would have been cool to see but McG's plan's for Salvation part two were absolute poo.
He wanted to do another time travel story into the modern day world, this time with JC coming back just before judgement day, original concept, I know, only this time the big new idea is that this time, it wouldn't just be an infiltration unit, it would include the robots we already saw (that transformers and those motorbike Terminators) in part one and John's role would be to convince our leaders to to prepare for the war.

2. Salvation

4. T3 (3&4 are kind of tied)

@JustAWaffle - I don't get the love for T2. Yes, the liquid Terminator effects were awesome for the time, but man did that movie go on for an extra 45 min.s too long.

I love T3 because it got straight to the point, had an awesome chase scene (it came out around Matrix 2's chase scene and completely made M2 look pathetic compared to T3"s chase scene), and you saw the aftermath of T2 .... plus John having to teach a new Terminator stuff

JustAWaffle - 5/30/2024, 5:06 PM
@lazlodaytona - I liked 3 too, but if felt a little too polished. I can’t quite describe it, but it was a common theme in most blockbusters of the early 2000s.

T2 had a lot more grit and practical effects mixed in with the lore, and that’s why I enjoyed the directors cut more.

@dagenspear - that's totally cool and I get it.
I kinda explained it in this thread but I just felt T2 went on way too long. The effects were groundbreaking at the time and the story was good, just too dang long

@JustAWaffle - it's set in between movies 2 and 3.

Only two seasons and the finale makes no sense, but it is awesome. I'd put it 2nd place on my Terminator list.
