McG Defends His Role as Director of Terminator Salvation

McG, notorious for directing CHARLIE'S ANGELS, says that he will "let the film do the talking" for him.

McG, director of Terminator Salvation is painfully aware of the criticism aimed at him and his career path, but he's unapologetic about his past. In a recent interview, McG said:

"You’ve got to earn your stripes and pay your dues, and I’m certainly willing to earn mine. Fortunately, I’m most comfortable in this genre, ironically. These are the films that I grew up on. This was my film school. This was my passion. So, I’m very comfortable working in this world. You just take the good with the bad, and you take your lumps along the way. On this picture, I tried to get away from being a cheerleader and really just let the film do the talking."

McG went on to explain that the fan base and respect for the audience were even important in making decisions about how the film was shot:

"One of the things that we wanted to do, in this picture, was honor the audience and the passionate by staging and blocking the picture in a way that wasn’t reliant upon cuts. I think cutting is a bit of a cheat, when say there’s a bunch of cameras on the scene and you cut it together and make it work in post. We chose to go and scout the locations. Christian was a good sport, and we blocked the action very succinctly. The camera swings around to see a transport ship of Skynet flying away, Christian runs over to a helicopter and the pilot’s been killed, and he gets in the helicopter to take off, all without a cut. The camera is now moving with him. The hole down below explodes, the helicopter crashes, he cuts himself out of the seatbelt, and crawls out to see a mushroom cloud, which is effectively the ashes of all the people he cares about, until he’s interrupted with the hand on the shoulder of a T600. There were no cuts. And, we do that a great many times in the picture, in the spirit of saying, "We honor you, audience."

Terminator Salvation stars Christian Bale as John Connor, the man destined to lead the human resistance against Skynet's army of Terminators, Anton Yelchin as a young Kyle Reece and Sam Worthington as Marcus Wright, a human-Terminator hybrid. It has also been rumored that Arnold Schwarzenegger will make a brief appearance in the film, thanks to CGI technology and stock footage from Terminator (1984).

Terminator Salvation explodes into theaters May 23, 2009!

Man, I can't wait to see this flick! I haven't been so excited about a Terminator film since I watched the original at a friend's house against the wishes of my parents when I was a kid!

If the trailers are any proof, we'll all be asking, "Charlie's Angels? What was that?"

How is it that some people have already seen it? Was it leaked on the internet or were there pre-screenings somewhere or what?

its not that hard to not mess up a movie that has a wide fan base. just stick to the basics and dont add glow sticks dont have it look like a gay pride parade. (hint hint batman forever and batman and robin). the story is alreday handed to him on a silver platter.

@MetalHead: Is there, like, a list to get on to see these screenings or do they just pick people off of the street like for the Jay Leno show?

Natalia,
I think it's something where people do that as a job, but not like they get hired, they just get paid a few bucks to view them. I wish I knew how to get in but I'd bet that it's done mainly in areas with movie studios. This is just me guessing based on things that I've heard over the years though-- I could be wrong.

Why am I supposed to care whether they film scenes in a single shot or not?

I am excited for the movie, and don't give a rats ass what else McG has done(his name does bug me though), but thinking I should care what the movie looks like before it was edited just sounds stupid.

How does bale do all that without so much of a cut? lol. This movie is looking like the mutts nuts!

@HARRISONBERGERON

To further CRAPPYBUMBUM's point, Children of Men was AWESOME!

And a great deal of the reason for that awesomeness was the filming style. Don't you remember the ambush scene on the road in that movie? INSANE!

You might not notice when there are cuts, but you definitely do notice when there aren't! Makes a huge difference!

I am now TWICE as excited for this movie!!!

I get that not having cuts will look good, but it has nothing to do with Terminator and "honoring the audience". I guess I misinterpreted the context of the quote, I thought he was making a case for why we should give him a shot with the Terminator franchise, and fancy filming styles have little to do with Terminator, IMO.

@Natalia and Metalhead - it's pretty easy to get into those screenings as long as you live in the right area. They usually just have a couple people that hang outside of theaters and ask people in their target demographic if they wanna see a free movie. Then you RSVP, show up, see a free movie, then talk about the movie in a little group so they can get everyones opinion.

I was sceptical about the film when I first heard. Terminator 3 didnt inspire much else, but this film looks to take the franchise in a new direction. I've never seen Charlies Angels and dont care about the directors past.

I THINK THIS MOVIE WILL BE AWSOME, EVERY FAN WANTED TO SEE THE FUTURE, PLUS, DUDE THERES VARIETIES OF TERMINATORS! I THINK ITS JUST AWSOME, THEY GOT ALL THE TRADITIONAL TERMINATORS FROM PAST FILMS PLUS SOME NEW ONES, (THE BIKES ARE VERY COOL), THEY EVEN HAVE A VOLTRON SIZED ONE.

LOL ****ing McG...what a ****ing headcase...seriously.

I just read an article where McG reveals the original ending to Salvation. You know, the one that was leaked where they take the SKIN of Connor and place it over the Marcus's endo.

Anyway, here's how it ended...you won't believe this:

John's followers put John Connor's skin onto Marcus's endo...Marcus (now John Connor) gets up, grabs a gun, and kills Kate, Kyle, Blair, and Barnes...NOT KIDDING.

This is the original ending right from the horses mouth. Now McG is trying to decide whether or not to include this ending as part of the deleted scenes in the special features section of the DVD.

MY OPINION: **** NO!!! I don't ever want to see that shit anywhere. I'm a hard core Terminator fan, and an ending like that might give me nightmares for the rest of my life.

...can't say I feel any better about Salvation after reading that rediculous crap, but recent reviews have all cited that the new ending is GOOD; we'll see.

HarrisonBergeron are you a film fan at all? The way you shot a film and handle the camera work is a very important part and can make a good film great.

(I wish we had a F'ing forum on this site so we could actually have a discussion with some contintuity instead of starting all over again the next time an article comes up about the same movie!!! Not blaming CBM, though-- I'm glad we can at least do this. Just saying.)

Anyway, Macksimus,
Yeah, I'm with you. That ending would not only be horrible but would probably ruin my life! All joking aside, though, I would honestly like to see where he was going with the idea. Who knows?-- Maybe the idea would have been F'ing awesome. And having John Connor as a cyborg could very easily fix a lot of the continuity problems. I won't get into any right now but you can use your imagination.

Regardless of how cool it COULD HAVE been, though, I sure am glad that they did NOT go that route. I can't even imagine how pissed I'd be walking out of the theater on May 21st at 2am after the midnight showing ended just shaking my head through the parking lot and not even being able to come up with the words to yell until I had a night to sleep on it. And then I'd probably end up in jail for 1st degree murder after I found who was responsible for the disaster. Seriously, just try to imagine that scenerio where those scenes happen and then the movie ends. We'd be F'ing FURIOUS! I just hope he doesn't go that route in one of the next movies. Oh my God-- imagine if that was how he ended the final one! I need to find this guy now to beg him NOT to do ANYTHING even REMOTELY CLOSE to that!

That being said, I still have a lot of faith that this movie will be F'ing sick. If it does end up blowing and you notice that for a while after its release that I'm not posting anymore it means that I pulled a Chris Benoit minus the family. Just kidding but that should get the effect that I was going for. More than likely I'll just be crying alone in the shower (see "Ace Ventura: Pet Detective" scene after he finds out that Finkel is Einhorn).

LOL never mind...

...there already is a CBM forum. Just look to the left and scroll down a little ways on the home page, Metalhead.

However, there isn't a "Terminator" forum; I guess we'll have to post in the "CBM General Discussions" forum.

Anyway, there you go.

Saw him at Comic Con. Wanted to give him the benifit of the doubt, but he just came off as a total douche.

Sam Worthington, Anton Yelchin, Bryce Dallas Howard, Common, and Moon Bloodgod were all at the panel, but it was all McG doing the talking. Even answering questions that weren't directed at him.

Douche.
