Rorschach's Terminator: Salvation Review

OK so I realize I'm a bit late with this but it only came out in my Country today so bare with me! Its pretty much spoiler free, except for one bit at the end which I needed to get a last dig in at McG!

Review Opinion

Let me start by saying that im a fan of the Terminator movies. Im not a fanatic or an expert by any means, but i think the first one is a genre classic and the follow up a great action flick. The third one i even found watchable but it was very disappointing.

Salvation is better than the third one. But its not a patch on Camerons movies. Is it fair to compare them? I think so, its a Terminator movie isnt it? Which standard should we be holding it to? Robocop? That being said it is by no means a failure and i actually really enjoyed it..for the most part!

Im not going to go into the story. If youv seen it you know it, and if you havnt then i wont spoil it. Ill start with what i liked.

Anton Yelchin as Kyle Reece was class. He played the part perfectly and even channeled Michael Bien a little bit. He added warmth and likability seriously lacking in the other characters. But he was woefully underused, as was Moon Bloodgood as Blair. As was to be expected the action scenes and special effects are second to none. Standouts being a road chase with Terminator motorbikes and some nice hand to hand combat. The story is a good one, it certainly keeps your interest..its just a pity it was in the hands of a more capable director. Which leads me onto the not likes..

John Connor. Its very important to like and identify with the main protagonist in a story but Connor really is a bore. The tormented, anguished hero bit gets old VERY fast. Bale isnt at fault, technically he puts in a solid performance. Its just a shame that McG feels that the best way he can serve the story is to basically growl at walkie talkies for 2 hours. A good way to humanize him would have been seeing his relationship with Kate Brewster(Howard), but Mcg [frick]s this up too by reducing her part to a cameo and ensuring there is zero chemistry at all between them. By the end when we see her ridiculous slow mo mouthing of "John" as she sees her husband has survived, nobody gives a shit!

Sam Worthington fares much better as Tin Man Markus Wright. He also suffers a bit with some dodgy dialogue, but hes certainly more of a hero we can root for. He handles the drama and action with aplomb and im really looking forward to seeing him in his hundreds of upcoming movies!

Now onto the most important part. The Terminators. They are pretty cool looking and theres some nice variations on the models. But what really annoyed me is that they have completely changed they're method of Termination. before they would blast a hole in you or punch a hole through your chest but now they seem to feel that picking you up and tossing you a few feet is the best way to get the job done! Yes folks, thats what the Terminators do in this movie. Toss people

Also, the rating hurts the movie. Theres no 2 ways about it. Its a watered down Terminator movie, with watered down Terminators. An R rated franchise needs to continue being R rated, if for nothing else, continuity. It might seem like a small thing but if Reece likes to say "Metal Mother[frick]ers" when hes sent to protect Sarah Connor, i want him saying it when he was a damn teenager! People curse. In a post apocalyptic future im willing to bet the curse a lot! Not a big deal right? No, but it would have added some realism, and showed that McG wasnt full of shit when he said he didnt try to get anything down to a PG13.

It might seem like im slating this a bit but it really is worth seeing. Its a testament to the power of the story and the awe inspiring spectacle of the movie that it succeeds in spite of its glaring flaws. Of course we are going to have another one..or 2! But unfortunately, SPOILER ALERT..since Mcg has done away with the most interesting character, all we have to look foward to next time is more from old glowery britches Connor!

3/5

Yep, Old Eire sometimes gets shafted with the release dates. Most big movies do come out here around the same time though...

Well written from what I've skimmed across mate, and I completely agree with your comments about the rating of the film, especially after just watching T1 again - it was pretty much a Sci-Fi Horror (especially when I watched it as a kid!)

The 3rd film which shall not be named was a joke compared to the content in the first!!

Was part 3 "R"?

Cheers bcat, yeah after watching the first one last night myself its just so clear that they have changed a sci fi chiller into a teenage action movie. Seriously, there was more tension is every scene than Mcg managed to wring out of his entire movie. And more chemistry between the 2 supporting cop characters than Bale, Worthington or the rest of the cast!

Betty it was a 15 certificate here which meant it prob was R in the states. Either way it was certainly more adult orientated than Salvation.

Ok 15 certificate has piqued my interest. Are movies rated in a number system, 15 being the largest, "R"? What number is considered "G", "PG" ect.?

MarkCassidy
MarkCassidy - 6/7/2009, 3:00 PM
It starts at U(universal), then pg, 12, 15 and 18 would be the equivalent of an R. But for some reason, whenever a movie is rated 15 over here its usually rated R over in the states anyway because you only have 2 ratings there..or do movies still sometimes get slapped with an NC17?

I an Aussie and over here it rates like this G(disney movies and shit) PG (parental guidance for 15 and under) M (Recomended for mature audicences 15 and over) MA (restricted to 15 and over) R (restricted 18 and over) Now all 4 terminators have been rated M over here u can use the word [frick] as long as it's not in reference to someone (stupid i know but not much makes sense with film in this country) but i get what ur saying just thought u guys might be interested in that
PS salvation only opened over here on the 4th of june

I dont know but over here in the US it seems they use the word f* for every other word. Now even on tv they are using curse words. I was watching a show REAPER and they kept using the term: "Stop being a d*ck"! I was shocked. I had my kids in the room with me and didnt know the show would be like that especially primetime.

NC17 is used here, I have seen it. I think more on the VG though.

Not seen this yet, it's hard to get time to go to the cinema these days!

Although I've not seen it I can completely agree with the rating issue. A Terminator is just that, it's not called a "Tosser". It should try to kill you as quickly as possible. Plus, people in this situation aren't going to water down their language, "die, sponge, die" doesn't cut it. I remember seeing Robocop on TV and they watered down the language, besides seeing the mouths say something stronger it just didn't work! You need a 15 rating at very least for these two points to come across effectively on screen. That's just holding it up as a movie on it's own, put it with the other Terminator films and the rating becomes even more of a problem. The 1st two films were a 15 (thought 1 was 18 but no) and the 3rd was 12. The 3rd only just got away with the rating as it was a "chase" movie but this film is more of a war movie!

Keven i know they cant outright kill the main characters they are fighting but there are ways to write around that without the damn grabbing and throwing! I mean seriously, i went to see it again recently and i counted about 7 grabs and throws, clumsy knocks to the ground or glancing blows when they had every opportunity to just tear their prey apart. Its all down to lazy writing. Why do they have to get thir hands on the humans at all in these circumstances? If its close calls they want, have Connor and his pals duck or block the blows with something. There are so many other things they can do. But we got..THE TOSSENATORS!
