Terminator Salvation Review

Is this film the salvation of the franchise?

I remember as a little kid, sneaking downstairs when my brother and his friends had rented the original "Terminator" film. I peeked my head around the corner of the sofa just in time to see a close up shot of the glowing red eye of Arnold Schwarzenegger. To this day, as I lay in bed, I can see the red "charging" light on the base of my cordless phone and the only thing I can think of is...you guessed it, the glowing eye of the Terminator. And so began my journey into Sci-Fi and Horror films.

The first "Terminator" film was ground breaking. "Terminator 2: Judgement Day" set a new standard for special effects in movies. "Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines" bombed, majorly. "Terminator Salvation" gives this franchise a much needed boost and brings the concept to a new generation.

The director, McG, really surprised me with this film and he is really starting to show his talent. Most people know of him from directing the "Charlie's Angels" films and "We are Marshall," but I think this will really bring him to the forefront. I must add that Michael Bay, director of "Transformers" and its upcoming sequel needs to up his game if he wants to hold on to the title of "The Dude Who Blows a Ton of Stuff Up" because there are a lot of things going boom in this film. It is loud and really well done, not over the top.

The SFX are done well. Being there are a lot of up close shots of different robots and all their moving parts, the scenes had to be done well and seamless and they achieved that. There are some really cool camera angles and points-of-view that give you a whole new perspective of viewing a film. Did I mention it was loud?

Christian Bale played the role of John Connor well; nothing that stands out by any means but he keeps your attention. A few weeks back I had talked about Anton Yelchin and his role in "Star Trek". I was not a big fan of that role and his portrayal of Chekov. He is back to a higher level here. For some reason, he draws my attention. He's very capable of playing characters that land on opposite sides of the spectrum and he does is very well. Sam Worthington is moving very quickly up the Hollywood ladder and this film shows you why.

Whether you're a fan of the "Terminator" series or not, I'd tell you give this movie a try. It's fast paced, entertaining and a lot of fun. Go buy some popcorn and some Red Vines and plop your butt down for this one. Oh, did I mention it was loud?

I don't know what you mean about the third film, I watched the films right before I went to see Salvation and what the third film did is really pump me up for the new one, but I will agree that Salvation was a great action movie and yes really loud!!

I apologize, let me clarify...I actually like the third film, but if I remember correctly it under-performed at the box-office and did not make it's money back ($150 million at the box office and cost $200 million to make). Just not nearly as popular as the other films have been and now will be.

Is it true that it is never explained in the movie how Skynet knows about Kyle being John's father???

Were you able to figure out how it found out???

thanks

Ya know...I don't think it did! I didn't really pay attention, but nothing stands out to me that would suggest how they knew. Granted, I'm not a Terminator Buff so, I really wasn't paying that much attention, but I don't recall.

SOB!!!

I bet it doesn't explain why there are T-800s this early either huh???

...if you're a hardcore fan of the saga like I am then these two points would definitely stand out to you as plot holes.

I'm kind of pisssed off they don't go into this more.

Thanks for the answer

Macksimus,
What do you want to know? You know me-- I can tell you anything that you need to know about it.

No, they didn't explain how Skynet knows about Kyle, BUT like I said in another post, one of the positives of this movie is that it didn't do anything to make contradictions, either (meaning they didn't get into specific details as to why things happened like "Terminator 3: Rise of The Trash" did).

As far as the T-800s, the concept of this movie is that this time period is the time where the T-800's are just now (as in RIGHT at this moment) coming online and replacing the T-600s.

(Nothing new here from me, BUT...) Anyone who thinks that "Terminator 3" was good knows NOTHING about the series or the concept of time travel, otherwise you would know that it single-handedly ruined the posibility of the first 2 films from being possible due to flaws with their time travel logic. The movie literally created a contradiction that made the existence of John Connor and Skynet IMPOSSIBLE!

I'm going to see it tomorrow. Thanks for answering my questions. It has been a bery sad week for me;. T4 is getting slammed by EVERYBODY. I just hope I like it somewhat.

I was worried about those two things as possible plot holes in the movie, but I think htey'll be adressed in the next 2 films...hopefully. I can live with the idea that the T-800s are just now coming online, but I gotta know how Skynet knows the siginificance of John and Kyle.

Sorry aboutmy typing btw. I loaded Windows 8, and it has screwed everything up. The comment box is so small that I can't see what I'm writing.

Anyway, thanks.

Glad to see that you like it, though.

How would you rated it 1 to 10?

Macksimus,
Tough to rate it just yet. I'm gonna see it again tomorrow. Like I said before, I needed time (as you probably will, too) to let it sink in since if you build a story in your mind as to how it should be and then it isn't exactly that way, you will automatically be immediately disappointed. This is a biased opinion. But then once you have some time to reflect and see it for what it is, you may appreciate it more, enjoy it more and like it more. That is what is happening with me right now. With every hour that has passed I have liked it more and more.

I think that you will like it because it was a movie that was made for the die-hard fans. There are many shout-outs to the first two films and almost zero acknowledgment whatsoever to the third. I'll have to wait til I see it 2 more times before I can rate it. But I will say that (a) it must be a positive that I want to see it again and (b) the more I think back on it, the more I like it.

Thanks Metal

Alot of other Terminator fans are saying the same thing. After they saw it the first time they didn't know what to think, but after they saw it the second tame, and saw it for what it is they weremore pleased with the movie overall.
