TRON: ARES Director Confirms Movie Start Date Has Been Delayed With 150 Crew Members Now Laid Off

The effects of the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike are still being felt, with Tron: Ares director Joachim Rønning taking to social media to reveal that work on his planned threequel has ground to a sudden halt.

The WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes are still ongoing, and we're beginning to see movies and TV shows hit by the expected release date delays.

Now, we can add Tron: Ares to the list as director Joachim Rønning has taken to Instagram to share an update on the long-awaited threequel, expressing his frustration with the strikes which have resulted in the movie's start date being pushed back.

"Many of my best friends are writers. Everything starts with the story. Everything starts with you. That must continue," the filmmaker says. "And that means that AI needs to be regulated. There is no doubt about the threat the technology poses to all creatives."

"Today was supposed to be our first day of principal photography on Tron: Ares (a movie subsequently about AI and what it means, and takes, to be human). Instead, we are shut down with over a hundred and fifty people laid off. It’s indefinite, which makes it exponentially harder for everyone."

"The AMPTP, SAG-AFTRA and WGA need to speed up the negotiating process and not leave the table until it’s done," Rønning adds. "This is Hollywood. We close deals for breakfast. Why do we suddenly have all the time in the world when every day is so precious? These tactics are extremely frustrating."

It's hard to disagree with anything Rønning says here and we're sure you'll notice that the director has now confirmed AI will be a big part of Tron: Legacy's plot.

In terms of the movie's cast, Jared Leto, Evan Peters, and Jodie Turner-Smith lead that, with Greta Lee, Cameron Monaghan, and Sarah Desjardins among the most recent additions.

Tron was released in 1982 and earned $50 million on a $17 million budget. It became a cult classic in the years which followed, while the 2012 sequel, Tron: Legacy, grossed $400 million on a $170 million budget. It was a result which saw the movie deemed a financial disappointment, hence why the way for a sequel has been so long.

Tron: Ares doesn't currently have a confirmed release date.

I am perfectly fine if the strike ends up KILLING a Tron film starring Jared Leto that is from the director of Maleficent: Mistress of Evil and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales.

Hoping those crew find new work of course.

“Are you happy Hollywood?! Because thanks to your strike, we may not get Tron 3 from the director of Pirates of the Caribbean 5 and Maleficent 2 starring Jared Leto!”

Oh darn. How will we ever survive…

I must have bad taste in movies because I loved Tron: Legacy. Watching that movie made me realize that Olivia Wilde would have been a good Lois Lane

@HammerLegFoot - no. that was a pretty damn good movie (except for some bad cgi on jeff bridges) but i truly liked it alot. Plus, Olivia Wilde is soooo damn sexy

So now crew members are getting laid off.

You guys still view the strike as unquestionably good?

Always sucks to see others punished for the actions of others. But make no mistake, this strike isn’t solely to blame on one side or the other.
Producers/Actors/Directors/Studios could stand a few million in cash to distribute the money better amongst the crew.

Vin Diesel doesn’t need 25Mil per movie

@Blergh - exactly. It's crazy they're expecting iger to distribute his wealth while the sag members making millions aren't willing to do the same. All they're offering is "support".

@Origame - the whole conversation has been diluted by the rich vs poor mindset, it’s indeed that same issue but massive actors are part of the problem.
You don’t get to hog the spotlight, play the victim while you, yourself are very much the reason one of more writers got cut because you just cost that much.
I total get them protesting but they need to be willing to take a pay cut to help their less fortunate peers.

Like it’s great that Margot Robbie gets 50mil, but she shouldn’t. Instead her 100+ person crew should have gotten 90% of that distributed evenly.
Same for producers and directors.

I’ve met actors that struggle to survive act alongside big opera stars that get 15k per performance.
Orlando Bloom got 25k for being Legolas in the original LotR trilogy, that’s the maximum I’d be willing to pay an actor for a movie.

I like how Jason Blum does it. „You get paid the minimum fee for a performer and get to eat of the back-end if it’s a success“.
Directors, Grips and actors tend to earn in the same price range for Blumhouse films. Only actors get a share of the BO if they help it become a success. That’s the way

@Blergh - I can get that.

Saw the original movie, it was an advance in cgi at the time i think. never had any interest in the sequel. pass on the third movie if it ever happens.

He's not wrong, they do need to get these deals done. On the other hand, this isn't the TRON 3 people want, Disney killed that years ago.

His sentiments aren't wrong. I've said in several other posts that they need to get back to the table and stay there, not walk away again. That said, I think his wording is a bit tone deaf. It sounds like only now that this is effecting his movie, he cares. I'm one of the thousands of crew members that have been out of work since the strike started back in May. I believe in and support the fight for what's fair. And the deals struck with these two guilds will end up helping the other unions who's contracts will be coming up for negotiation in the next year. And for the record, I did hear that the writers have in fact returned to the bargaining table as of this past Friday.
