BOX OFFICE: SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING Spectacularly Exceeds Expectations With $125+ Million

Well, we didn't see this coming! Spider-Man: Homecoming has come in well above estimates this weekend in what's looking like an amazing, astonishing, and spectacular debut for the MCU's wall-crawler...

Spider-Man: Homecoming has been tracking bigger and bigger all week but after recent figures pointed to a debut somewhere in the $100 million range, the latest numbers now point to the reboot scoring a three-day haul of between $125 million - $127 million. That's the second-biggest domestic opening of all-time for Sony Pictures and the second biggest opening weekend out of the six Spider-Man movies.

With $15.4 million from Thursday evening preview screenings, Spider-Man: Homecoming's predicted opening day haul has surged from an estimated $49 million to $51.5 million. This is an awesome result for Sony and proof that teaming with Marvel Studios was definitely the right (and very smart) decision.

Marvel also benefits as they own the merchandising rights to the wall-crawler and the more popular this reboot is, the more toys they'll sell! Younger moviegoers appear to be flocking to what is essentially Marvel's first Young Adult movie so it will be interesting to see how Saturday matinees do and whether or not we suddenly start seeing an influx of comic book adaptations set in high schools!

@MarDCel - Im not either... but here is the REAL QUESTION...
Will Sony just back the [frick] off and let Marvel take over and keep this little deal, or will they be like "we got this" take it back and destroy it immediately like they are doing with their stupid SPIDEYVERSE that has no spidey???

what are they most likely going to do? It's the first time they ever got this kind of scores with critics and they haven't taken enough to make almost all their money back just from opening night in a loooooooong ass time.

@MarDCel - Well deserved indeed! They really did it. What a great movie

@MarDCel - How many times to we read about CBM fatigue from the critics? Yet this is already probably the best year superhero movies have ever seen, and we still have Thor and Justice League to look forward to.

So far three arguable classics, going by fan reaction and reviews (Logan, Homecoming, Wonder Woman) and one very good sequel (GotG2). Based on what I've seen of them so far, I'm hopeful Thor and JL can finish the year as strongly as these other films have started it.

And what a time to be a fan of this genre.

@PBIRD - well, they're still making those spinoffs and i keep hearing things where certain villains (kraven and mysterio) aren't available.. so.. sounds like lesson unlearned... and i'm all for a sub spidey universe, but it's just gonna be another sony creative universe

@PBIRD - It'd be pretty stupid if they did. They're keeping ll the money from the Spidey solo films, and the MCU has a main avenger to lead them into Phase 4

@PBIRD - It would be pretty stupid for them to try and fix what isn't broken. Tom Holland is already contracted through Avengers 3 and 4 and Spider-Man Homecoming 2 has been confirmed, plenty of time for Sony to get a good look at what they stand to gain from a continued partnership. I'm hoping that the Asian kid in the bathroom scene will return and be formally introduced as Amadeus Cho.

@Clundgren - Remember the time we had to wait 2-3 years for a comic book movie to come out. I do. It's true. What a time to be a fan of this genre.

@PBIRD - Unfortunately, Sony won't learn. They have a history of making bad movies (with some exceptions, of course). I mean, who the hell even asked for this spin offs! They're gonna ruin it and if they don't....well, I won't be too excited because they're not set in the MCU. I would be so pissed if they somehow ruin the MCU timeline.

@PBIRD - The movie was (pun intended) Spectacular and Holland is so spot on, earnest and just plain likable as Spidey it's like he IS Parker. That said, yes Sony will screw it up like they are doing with their Spideyverse. Sony is kind of like Dr. Doom in the comics. As soon as he's winning he purposely does something to fail at the last minute.
PBIRD
PBIRD - 7/8/2017, 10:37 PM
@Buckster10 - what Sony is is a bunch of old foreign dudes in suits saying "SONY IS MAKING ANY MONEY AND WE ARE SITTING ON A FRANCHISE! WHILE SPIDERMAN IS POPULAR AGAIN LETS DICK RIDE IT TO THE GRAVE! SO WE CANT USE SPIDERMAN UNTIL MARVEL IS DONE? COOL... WHAT ABOUT THE OTHER 20 SOMETHING CHARACTERS? GET THEM GOING! WE NEED MONEY!"

and as long as they are property and fandom... Feige is a fan, he treats the properties as fandom, they will keep trying to turn out numbers. No matter what. And because I realize this, I sadly believe that Sony is going to RUIN it just as quick as they get it, maybe even a second before.

@PBIRD - SPOILER:

I have a feeling it was Sony's idea to let the Vulture find out Spider-Man is Peter Parker. It just stinks of Sony. The thing is, it was executed so well that I forgive it.
