SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING Reviews Are In - What Are The Critics Saying?
The reviews are in but does Spider-Man: Homecoming deliver a modern classic along the lines of Spider-Man 2 or a disappointment akin to The Amazing Spider-Man 2? Find out what the critics are saying here!
The first wave of Spider-Man: Homecoming reviews are here and the consensus so far is that this is one of the best Marvel movies to date! Compared to both Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Guardians of the Galaxy it sounds like Sony's decision to team up with Marvel has paid off big time as the signs are pointing to this being up there with Spider-Man 2 as a truly spectacular Spidey adventure.
There's only one negative review which comes courtesy of The Hollywood Reporter but even that isn'toverwhelmingly bad and the rest find more than enough good points to get fans really excited.
None of the excerpts belowcontain any major spoilers, but as per usual, you're going to want to be careful clicking through to read some of these as they do drop quite a few big hints about what's to come in Spider-Man: Homecoming. Thankfully, many of them point out that Marvel has concealed a lot of big twists, turns and reveals so at least we know we have plenty to look forward to in the reboot!
As one would expect after seeing Civil War, Spider-Man is right at home in the MCU. The franchise’s sense of humor jibes with Spidey’s attitude, and the lighthearted tone makes the character feel fresh even though we’re on our third version. Weighty notions of responsibility can come later. The tragedy that follows Peter Parker around has been done. This new Spider-Man is swinging high and fancy free, and he finally feels right at home. With all this against him, Watts delivered exactly the kind of shake-up the MCU — and the Spider-Man — franchise needs. Not every movie can be an epic ensemble like The Avengers or Captain America: Civil War. This series needs to have smaller-stake stories, too. And by thoughtfully considering how a modern Spider-Man would fit into the character-driven realm of the MCU, Watts not only created a superhero movie full of charm and surprises, but also one the best MCU movies yet.

Spider-Man: Homecoming is so joyously entertaining that it’s enough to temporarily cure any superhero fatigue. There’s wit, smarts and a nifty, inventive plot that serves as a reminder of what buoyant fun such films can bring. It might have taken three attempts but Spider-Man has finally spun gold. [4*]

As with the very best of the web-slinger’s Marvel stories, Spider-Man: Homecoming is a winning combination of a fun superhero adventure tale with a heartwarming story about a regular kid dealing with some very relatable issues (well, relatable in the non-superhero sense anyway). Tom Holland’s Spidey can’t swing back onto screens again fast enough. [8.7/10]

Spider-Man: Homecoming is a movie that not only grows on you, it practically grows up in front of you. Watching a superhero movie on this scale that’s about a teenage kid at first feels odd, because it’s so unusual. But for everything Marvel Studios’ first Spider-Man movie accomplishes, including that distinction, it deserves to be discussed among the better films in the MCU.

The more I think about SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING, the more I appreciate and adore it. It's definitely in the top echelon of Marvel movies, up there with the first GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY and CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER, which might be my twofavorite superhero movies of all time. I've only seen it once, this is true, but even after one viewing it's pretty hard to walk away from HOMECOMING not thinking you've just seen the most ideal big-screen take on Spidey yet, and one of the best examples of the genre, period. Spider-Man: Homecoming is a franchise reboot done right. Thanks to an extraordinary performance from Tom Holland, an authentic portrayal of high school life that would make John Hughes proud, some surprises that have thankfully been kept secret for the most part, and a larger sandbox for Spidey to crawl around in and some impressive action, Spider-Man is amazing once again. So, yes, after 13 long years, we have ourselves another great Spider-Man movie – arguably the best Spider-Man movie. This is a Peter Parker who just loves being Spider-Man. And, frankly, it’s really hard not to love watching this Peter love being Spider-Man. It’s the kind of movie you leave and you’re just in the best mood – and still will be days later.

The magic of Homecoming is that it belongs more to the John Hughes cinematic universe than the Avengers’. It cleverly references other Marvel films and even iconic scenes from previous Spider-jams, and right when it needs to, the story tosses out a big twist that ups the emotional stakes for Peter and brings his student and superhero lives crashing down on him. He gets back up again to do the right thing, though, and as much as this Spider-Man upends the rule book, Homecoming is king at capturing the core nature of the character.

Hey, whatever helps the come-back-again cause: Marvel’s made a literal “Homecoming” in that one of their prized characters is no longer in a single-parent (Sony) household. The result is a “Spider-Man” that feels a little more punchy, laugh-filled, and exciting than one might expect from a property that’s already been given plenty of chances to succeed. And yet, when it says “Spider-Man will return” at the very end, one is tempted to think, “Don’t they mean ‘reboot’?”

Yet coming after the two Andrew Garfield “Spider-Man” films, which were the definition of super-forgettable competence, the movie is just distinctive enough, in concept and execution, to connect and become a sizable hit. If so, it could prove a key transitional film in the greater cinematic universe of comic-book movies. “Homecoming” tells its audience: This kid isn’t quite super — he’s just like you. “Ant-Man” did the same thing (and out of the Marvel zone, so did the “Kick-Ass” movies), but we’ve never seen a character as mythical as Spider-Man portrayed in such a user-friendly, sanded-down, After School Special way.
