Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse may have recently been pushed back to 2023, but Sony Pictures still impressed exhibitors and press with 15 minutes of footage during a CinemaCon presentation yesterday evening. It was also confirmed at the event that 2024's sequel won't simply be a "Part 2," but a movie in its own right titled Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse

According to filmmakers Chris Lord and Phil Miller, the movie takes place across six dimensions and will feature 240 characters. They also claimed that it's the biggest animated film of all time, primarily because over 1000 people are currently working to bring the epic conclusion to this trilogy to life.

io9 has shared a detailed description of the Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse footage they were fortunate enough to see, but here are some of the most noteworthy reveals:

  • The movie opens on Earth-65, Gwen Stacy's world. The Vulture is attacking the Guggenheim Museum, but is Italian and decked out in armour the site says makes him look like a gladiator
  • Spider-Gwen is a wanted fugitive on her world and is being hunted by her own father, Captain George Stacy
  • Miguel O'Hara, a.k.a. Spider-Man 2099, arrives to help defeat the villain, confirming he's from another reality. Miguel reveals that the heroes actually broke the Multiverse in the first movie, and there's now a hole in it that's allowing people to cross between worlds
  • Issa Rae plays Spider-Woman, but this Jessica Drew five months pregnant. She's working with Spider-Man 2099, and helps defeat The Vulture
  • Spider-Gwen is confronted at gunpoint by her father, forcing the hero to unmask. She denies killing Peter Parker, but he decides to arrest her anyway. Luckily, Miguel arrives in the nick of time to take her to another universe
  • Back in Miles Morales' reality, he's in trouble at school for missing lessons. It sounds like a fun sequence and we learn Miles wants to study alternate realities at Columbia University

So, there you have it! We can't help but read this and wish Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse was still coming out this year, but we'll have to wait until June 2, 2023 to see it. As for Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, that's now been slotted in for a March 29, 2024 debut in theaters.

Good thing they changed the name, which to make indicates they will be fairly stand-alone and not one story just split down the middle (like, for example, is the case with Dune)

@bkmeijer1 - I don't think that's a problem if it's split from a conceptual level. Technically lord of the rings is one story split into three parts for example.

But then you have movie adaptations like Harry Potter and hunger games where they just find a random cut off point in a complete story, and that's where I draw the line.

@Origame - true for Lord of the Rings. But atleast (for me) each movie also had a clear beginning and end point with a satisfying goal being met. That wasn't really the case for me with Dune or Hunger Games part 1

@bkmeijer1 - yeah that's definitely what you need. But the reason they didn't have that for hunger games and dune is because they took stories that weren't designed to be told that way and just cut them in half.

@Origame - I think they could've fixed it for Dune quite easily. Should've introduced a bad guy that keeps haunting Paul throughout the whole movie (and maybe also make him responsible for killing his dad) and ends with the bad guy and Paul fighting instead of Paul fighting some fairly random dude.

@Origame - But fortunately Harry Potter and The Hunger Games gave an end to their respective sagas. They could've had biggest problems...

Calling it now, that hole in the Multiverse will be how the Inheritors start hunting Spider-Totems (either as the main conflict of this movie or as a sequel hook for the third one).

@FinnishDude - that would be pretty dope. Kinda hoping we'll also see the three live-action Spider-Man lend their voices for that

Good thing they changed the name for the third? part.

@TheHumanSpider2 - Yeah the article is super confusing. It says the movie was pish back to 2023 but the sequel for 2024 is not just a part 2. Then talks about the trilogy. So is part 2 renamed or is this the name for part 3?

@Steel86 - I hate movies divided in two, so I hope Part 2 became Spiderverse 3, since Part 1 is now Spiderverse 2

Sounds like too much saturation. MARVEL has officially taken names of loved characters and used others characters in place of expected characters. Unless, I see Reed Richards, I'm writing off phase 4 as pandered nonsense.

@VictorAlonzo - You're writing off a block of movies over one that doesn't even have anything to do with them?

The 5 months pregnant spider-woman is the only thing that leaves me kinda perplexed, but the rest sounds good, basically what everyone was expecting plus the stuff with spider-gwen and her father.

To people complaining about a pregnant super hero...the previous movie had a [frick]ing PIG as Spiderman, and you find this ridiculous?
What is this, Nerdrotic!?

LongMayHeReign
LongMayHeReign - 4/26/2022, 9:50 AM
@TheHumanSpider2 - To me it's not that it's absurd, it's just watching her fight will be pretty worrying and trigger my anxiety for her baby...but maybe they want us to feel that?
TheHumanSpider2
TheHumanSpider2 - 4/26/2022, 9:56 AM
@LongMayHeReign - I think it sounds hilarious, still, we need to see it, the description probably doesnt make the sequence justice.
I mean, "Miles Morales escapes from The Prowler while having to carry an unconscious middle-age and overweight Peter Parker" sounds dumb AF, but it was one of the best sequences in the first movie.

A pregnant superhero.........lol. Ok
Razorface1
Razorface1 - 4/26/2022, 10:28 AM
@Cyclonus - What exactly is the hard part to believe? Are superheroes supposed to be sterile, or to not want kids?
ShimmyShimmyYA
ShimmyShimmyYA - 4/26/2022, 11:11 AM
@Razorface1 - the radioactive spiders giving people poppers and not immediately killing them and fighting lizard men, guys with robot arms, and someone who somehow has bright red waves for hair is ok but pregnancy is where they draw the line lol. [frick]ing nerds
WarMonkey
WarMonkey - 4/27/2022, 6:09 AM
@Razorface1 - Why would we want to pay money and spend time to watch a pregnant superhero? That's incredibly uninteresting.
