SPIDER-MAN: ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE Reportedly Faced "A Bunch Of Problems" During Production

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse was pushed from last April to this June, and a new report suggests the reason for that is some major issues behind the scenes that are likely to sound all too familiar.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was released to overwhelmingly positive reviews in 2018 and, after becoming a box office smash, the animated movie later won an Oscar.

There's understandably a huge amount of excitement for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, but a new rumour suggests the sequel faced some noteworthy issues behind the scenes. This news comes our way from The Town with Matthew Belloni (via Toonado.com), and the former Hollywood Reporter writer highlights a familiar problem.

"Well, it cost a lot more than the first one [Into the Spider-Verse] because they had a bunch of problems on this one," he explains, "and they scrapped a bunch of stuff and went back - it's Lord & Miller and they kind of write as they go..."

Phil Lord and Chris Miller's unique approach to filmmaking caused issues on the set of Solo: A Star Wars Story, prompting Lucasfilm to replace the duo with Ron Howard midway through production. While they aren't directing Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, they're heavily involved with the creative process; however, we aren't too concerned.

Remember, the movie was delayed, so that's likely giving Sony Pictures and the creative team enough time to iron out any lingering issues with Miles Morales' big screen return.

We've recently heard that Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse will feature a huge live-action cameo, and you can find the spoilery details on that by clicking here

In Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, after reuniting with Gwen Stacy, Brooklyn’s full-time, friendly neighborhood Spider-Man is catapulted across the Multiverse, where he encounters a team of Spider-People charged with protecting its very existence.

However, when the heroes clash on how to handle a new threat, Miles finds himself pitted against the other Spiders and must redefine what it means to be a hero so he can save the people he loves most.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is set to be released in theaters on June 2, 2023!

@bobevanz - Amy Pascal's own production company makes these movies, they gave Avi the Venom movies to keep him busy...however, after that message in NWH, I think he might be retired, or close to.

As long as the finish product is good, who cares?

Then I guess Lord and Miller won’t be making any DCU movies.

Guess going back and redoing a sequence is an easier approach in live-action than with an animated movie. Especially a movie with such unique animation as this one.

"Phil Lord and Chris Miller's unique approach to filmmaking caused issues on the set of Solo: A Star Wars Story, prompting Lucasfilm to replace the duo with Ron Howard midway through production."

And the finished product was shit, whereas every Lord and Miller project that the studio let them finish, instead of getting all skittish and firing them, was a runaway success.

Not writing a movie as you're making it is a very important rule of filmmaking, but there is an exception to every rule. Lord and Miller aren't just doing this because they are amateurs, this is their style and the result is always good.

Obviously this is why their films have that energy they have.

@ObserverIO - I would mostly agree on live action. with animation, you have to plan this shit out months in advance because it takes months to do even a fragment of a scene

@Dredd97 - And yet all the Lego movies, Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs and the first Spider-verse movie were all excellent, despite being Lord and Miler animated projects.

I mean you're not wrong. As a rule it's not the most sensible practice. It's bad for a live action film, and as you point out, those problems are only compounded with animation, due to the nature of it.

But they've already proven that their method works for them on many successful and excellent animated movies.

@ObserverIO - well they've only directed 4 movies, 5 if you include Solo. The Lego movie and 21 Jump Street were great, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs and 22 Jump Street were still very good, but not at that level.

Personally, given their limited track record and results, I don't see why some people think they can do no wrong - which is basically what you are saying here correct? When a cast and crew applaud your departure there's gotta be something there.

@ObserverIO - 100%! Nailed it.

@Itwasme - Applauding a wrap or departure is a tradition on film sets.

And I didn't say they could do no wrong, I'm saying that this method seems to be working for them.

@Itwasme - Also, not for nothing, but they have yet to do any wrong. Ninjago may be the the worst thing they've done and I really enjoyed that movie.

@ObserverIO - you can't say they have yet to do wrong when they were fired from 20% of the films they directed. And it was rather unprecedented that the cast and crew applauded the move, so much so it was newsworthy. Now we are hearing of the same types of problems they ran into on Solo on another film. It's been 9 years since they last completed a film they directed. I'm certainly not saying they aren't talented, but I don't see why they get such a free pass.

I mean, they are no Ron Howard... I say that tongue in cheek, but his track record is way better than theirs.

@Itwasme - When I say they have yet to do any wrong, I meant with the films they have thus far released.
Had they been allowed to complete Solo, I have no doubt it would have been better than the finished film.
So they have an untarnished track record, so far. Unlike Ron Howard, lol.

Considering the premise of the spiderverse movies, we can fill in the gaps when you say it's a live action cameo.
ObserverIO

@Origame - It couldn't be more obvious that it's a Nicholas Hammond cameo.

@ObserverIO - no dude. Clearly it's Harry styles as starfox (the Nintendo character, not the marvel one).

Has anyone heard the rumor that it was originally only one director.? Guy who did avatar and then they had to bring in two more director one was kemp from soul. Could it been the reason for delay it didn’t have the same heart as the first one.

The first one did well at the BO, it won an Academy Award for Best Picture over Pixar, and the studio gave them shit for the sequel after that? Sony, are you crazy!?
Anyway, this pretty much confirms splitting the movie in two was more than likely the studio's idea to milk the movie more.

@TheHumanSpider2 - the first Spiderverse they had Jibaro's creative director then they fired him...but they still keep his key sequence in Spiderverse...
