SPIDER-MAN: ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE Will End With A Cliffhanger Akin To THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse's directors have confirmed that the upcoming sequel is going to end on a cliffhanger that they say makes this Into the Spider-Verse follow-up their The Empire Strikes Back.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse swings into theaters a few short weeks from now, and we've known for some time that this instalment is the first half of a two-part finale to the animated trilogy.

Sony Pictures has confirmed that Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse will arrive next March, and co-director Kemp Powers has now confirmed that the second chapter will end on a cliffhanger that sets the stage for the third part of Miles Morales' story.

"Across The Spider-Verse is a movie on its own, but it definitely ends on a bit of a cliffhanger," the filmmaker tells Games Radar (via Toonado.com). "I think it’s a good cliffhanger. We hope that it’s a satisfying tee-up for what’s coming in the third film, because you want people to be excited about what’s coming next."

"And it helps that we knew going in that this was part two of a three-part story. Since you already know that that third story is guaranteed, you can tackle it a bit differently," Kemp continues. "That being said, there’s a lot of key characters in this film, and there’s a story in this film that has an arc of its own that we needed to complete."

Interestingly (and rather boldly), co-director Joaquim Dos Santos compared this second chapter to a certain Star Wars movie.

"I was very satisfied after The Empire Strikes Back," he notes. "And hopefully, this is our Empire."

A new international trailer was released for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse earlier this week, and you can check that out here. This sequel to 2018's Oscar-winning Into the Spider-Verse looks like a blast, and we're definitely intrigued to see how it tees up that third movie.

The movie stars Shameik Moore, Hailee Steinfeld, Jake Johnson, Issa Rae, Daniel Kaluuya, Karan Soni, Jason Schwartzman, Brian Tyree Henry, Luna Lauren Velez, Greta Lee, Rachel Dratch, Jorma Taccone, Shea Whigham, and Oscar Isaac.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse will swing into cinemas on June 2, 2023.

I don’t like how this movie is being treated. Feels too forced rn, the first seemed like a genuine project that blew up, this is starting to seem more like franchise bait

@ShimmyShimmyYA - It does feel like it's biting off more than it can chew. That being said, the movie will apparently be 2 hrs and 20 minutes, so it'll definitely have enough time to do what it needs to do.

That means Beyond the Spider-Verse is their Return of the Jedi.

This info is months old, anyway so either his dad dies.. or the spot is his dad. It literally can't be anything else lol.

Guessing Miles will succeed in saving whoever he wants to save and that will [frick] up the spiderverse

My guess is Miles ends up saving his fathers life using Time Travel he steals from Miguel. During the final act he'll probably travel back in time to undo the death of Peter Parker in the first movie however The Spot will follow him. Miles successfully saves his universe Peter however this prevents the creation of the multiverse which was given birth when his head was pushed into the multiverse device. This is complicated further by The Spot throwing himself into the multiverse beam.

Thus the Spider-verse is destroyed, the Spot is effectively in every multiverse, Gwen and Peter B.Parker along with Mayday and their entire multiverse worlds no longer exist and Miles has to somehow fix this all by teaming up with his universes Peter Parker (Chris Pine) in the next film.

So, Darth Vader is the father of Miles?

So The Spot is Miles Morales father?

Anyway, I wouldn't call that a cliffhanger per se. It is a cool note to end a middle chapter on though

I hope it doesn't end with everyone hating Miles for something he did 6 months back and Gwen having a family and kids with some random dude named Paul.
In all seriousness though , I hope Miles is central to this trilogy. All this marketing seems like they are setting up more Spiderverse stuff. The first one was so heartfelt and iconic that this one has to be at least one of them.

His Dad is definitely going to die in this one. :(

I'd guess the dad dies and Miles ends up trying to save him using Time Travel, Miguel O'Hara would have used it as he's just from the future as opposed to a different multiverse. Miguel gets angry with Miles manipulating things as it could cause damage to the multiverse and timeline.

Miles manages to save his Dad using this and gets cocky, wanting to save the original Spider-man from his fate in the first movie. Miles ends up going back and trying to saving Spider-man as he wanted to do in the first movie, however this erases the multiverse that was created when Spider-man entered the multiverse machine in the first movie. As such the entire Spider-verse no longer exists which causes massive damage to the timeline and multiverse as a whole, which Miles only realizes when he returns to the present. Throw in The Spot causing multiverse damage and you have the set-up for the third film. Miles has to fix the multiverse.

Don't ruin this [frick]ing thing before it even comes out.

The first one was a gift out of left field - way to make something special just a regular shitty IP cash grab.

Why don't they ever compare things to the Sequel Trilogy?

Like - 'This will be our Rise of Skywalker...'

Oh. It's because they suck.

Sure, let's just tell everyone the ending while we're at it.

I love it when people think just because it was said in an interview, it isnt considered a spoiler.

@Himura - "We hope this one feels like Empire Strikes Back" or "This movie will end in a way that leads directly into the already-announced third movie" is not a spoiler. What is wrong with y'all?
