So unless you have been on the other side of the UNIVERSE hanging out with The Guardians of the Galaxy, you probably know the little piece of info that broke the ENTIRE INTERNET yesterday.
Marvel Studios now is working in collaboration with Sony to create a Spider-man set within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Yes, you heard me right. SPIDER-MAN in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Let us all have a second of silence for all the fans rejoicing around the world.
Okay that's enough! Now lets talk about it. First, I'd like to talk about all that has led up to this.
Since Sam Rami's departure after the critical failure of Spider-man 3, Sony has been struggling to maintain the rights to Spider-man, thus resulting in the very mediocre The Amazing Spider-man films.
No matter what you have to agree, that The Amazing Spider-man films are a failure to at least some degree. Some blame directors take on the character, some blame Sony from mismanaging the projects, I think it was a bit of both.
The important thing is, Garfield will not be back, as I imagine neither will Marc Webb or any of the other actors from Sony's Amazing Spider-man films.
Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach "will become exec producers going forward. What ever that means. And Sony Pictures will continue to finance, distribute, own and have final creative control of the Spider-Man films.
Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat?
The biggest problem with this, as a lot of fans know Sony forced Rami to use Venom in Spider-man 3 despite the director not wanting to include the character. We all know how that turned out.
Some speculate that this could happen, even with their deal with Marvel and ultimately have Sony make a mess of yet ANOTHER Spider-man film.
While I'm still skeptical and believe this could possibly be true, I ultimately doubt it.
Why you ask?
Disney now owns Marvel and with the huge backing power Disney has, I sincerely doubt they'll be taken advantage of.
While there are the infamous “Sony Hack” emails which Amy Pascal spoke about the meetings with Marvel and wanted to make a very one sided deal with them. I doubt Disney lawyers would EVER let this happen.
So in short, we the fans can probably rest easy, all of the creative vision will hopefully be completely controlled by Marvel Studios.
Whew.
At any rate, lets move on to what we'd all like to see in this new cinematic version of our beloved Wall-Crawler.
1. GET A YOUNG ACTOR!
This is a pet peeve of mine and MANY of the fans is that even if Peter Parker is in high school the only cast people who are nigh 30 by the time the movie is shot.
Sometimes watching a teenager act is hard enough, let alone watching a 30 year old ACT like a TEENAGER.
So basically Logan Lerman, and Dylan O'brien are still too old.
If Thor: Ragnakok previous release date (July 28, 2017) is taken by the new Spider-man film, which is honestly the earliest it could possibly released in my opinion. Both Logan and Dylan will be 25 by this time.
Seriously, watching even a 25 year old play a teenager gets unbearable pretty fast and I personally would like to see the character as a teenager for a longer time much like the Harry Potter series. Which in comparison Daniel Radcliffe was only 21 at the end of the LAST Harry Potter film.
So no. Just get an unknown Marvel.
Preferably not someone named Chris in real life, I mean you already have threeChris's! Chris Evens, Chris Hemsworth, Chris Pratt. Just no more Chris's!
If some of you couldn't tell that last bit was a joke, so laugh and stop taking life so seriously.
Another option that some have wanted is an adult Peter Parker. While I do agree it would be great to see an adult Peter Parker, I don't think now is the time. I want to see the boy grow into the hero we all know him to be.
The Spider-man films should be a coming of age story, and that is not something that I think we've gotten to see in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Plus I think it would resonate well with the younger fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as this universe is their Star Wars or Harry Potter of this decade.
What I'm trying to say, is I'd like to see the story of Peter Parker growing into an adult and eventually taking the front and center spot of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Not just hap haphazardly dumping him in to the universe because Marvel got the rights back.
Anyway enough with that lets move on to point number two.
2. Do NOT reveal his identity.
While it is very enticing to follow the iconic Civil War story where Peter Parker unmasks in front of the entire world, it's not very smart.
In almost every previous Spider-man movie, all the central characters around Peter Parker know who Spider-man is. This I think cuts down the balancing of dual lives that Peter Parker is known for.
It's just part of the character and also, it cuts down on Parker's brilliance of hiding the secret for so long from so many.
To me Peter is a mixture of Tony Stark and Steve Rogers, Tony's brilliance and snark, and Steve's tactical mind and sense moral sense of right and wrong.
I think it could play out that Peter actually hides it from everyone, including Shield and that is part of the coolness of the character that he's younger but much smarter than a lot of the adults.
All I'm asking is one movie, where NO ONE knows that Peter Parker is Spider-man.
3. Joss Whedon should direct.
Anyone that has seen Buffy The Vampire Slayer knows how good Whedon is at directing a teenager's coming of age story.
He would also get the character's jokes something barely touched on in either previous incarnations.
Besides he did write and direct a little movie by the name of Avengers, and Avengers: Age Of Ultron. So there's that too in case you haven't thought of it.
4. Netflix series.
I don't care what you say, I want a TV show with Spider-man in it.
I think it would be great idea that one of my friends suggested, that Spidey should pop up in Jessica Jones for some reason, as a masked vigilante with spider powers where she keeps giving him all his nick names (Web Head, Wall-Crawler, Web-Slinger, etc.).
A scene played out in my head with Jessica finally teasing all his many nick names as jokes, and then Stan Lee comes by and just says, "How about Spider-man." And Peter is like, "I like the sound of that." Jessica is like, "Spidey for short?”
Weather you like that idea or not I could care less, it's just a thought that occurred to me.
But this is why I think Spidey really does need a Netflix series.
Netflix is getting really popular, it's the THING to watch shows on now for all ages of kids. Whereas most of us grew up watching HBO, and ABC, most kids now watch Netflix.
This is a huge platform that I think Marvel will have a lot of success with the other shows and would help it tie in that this Spider-man is in the same New York as Daredevil, Jessica Jones and everyone else.
Another reason, is Peter Parker really needs time to develop. I'd love to see more of the characters growing up in high school together, something that a film would be stretched to do just because of the time limit.
A more lot of characters could be introduced, that would make the eventual movie more interesting and set up the audience for this new version of the characters.
Plus, if rumor is correct and the new Spider-man movie is going to be about the Sinister Six, the Netflix series would be a great way to set up all the characters for that movie.
There you have it. These are key points that I think would make the Marvel Studios Spider-man better than Sony's.
