MORBIUS Writers Still Receiving "Story By" And "Screenplay By" Credits For MADAME WEB Movie

When the first trailer for Madame Web was released, it looked like Morbius scribes Matt Sazama & Burk Sharpless would no longer receive a writing credit. Well, that now appears to have changed...

When Sony Pictures released the first trailer for Madame Web earlier this month, the credited screenwriters were listed as only Claire Parker and director SJ Clarkson.

Parker doesn't appear to have any previous writing credits but is named as a producer on the likes of Life on Mars and MI-5. Clarkson directed episodes of the former, so that explains that, though she's only penned Mistresses and is primarily known for her directing work (including The Defenders, Succession, and Dexter).

Kerem Sanga, meanwhile, has been given a "Story By" credit, but only counts relatively obscure projects like The Young Kieslowski and The Violent Heart among his previous work. However, he's clearly been involved for a while as, last March, he shared an Instagram post about Dakota Johnson's casting and said, "Had a crazy idea for a movie, thanks [producer Eric Fineman] for believing from the start."

Morbius scribes Matt Sazama & Burk Sharpless were originally named as Madame Web's writers and the fact they didn't receive a mention when the trailer dropped surprised a lot of fans.

Well, Sony Pictures has just updated the movie's website and the screenplay is now credited to, "Matt Sazama & Burk Sharpless and Claire Parker & SJ Clarkson." As for the story, "Kerem Sanga and Matt Sazama & Burk Sharpless" are all listed.

We'd assume Sazama and Sharpless' screenplay was either rewritten or they were brought in due to their "knowledge" of the Marvel Universe after introducing the Living Vampire last year.

In terms of producers, Lorenzo di Bonaventura is named, as are Adam Merims and Parker. There's currently no sign of Avi Arad so this movie's place in the wider Spider-Verse is undeniably intriguing, particularly as he fancies himself the architect of this Spider-Man-less world.

Meanwhile, in another universe...In a switch from the typical genre, Madame Web tells the standalone origin story of one of Marvel publishing's most enigmatic heroines.

The suspense-driven thriller stars Dakota Johnson as Cassandra Webb, a paramedic in Manhattan who may have clairvoyant abilities. Forced to confront revelations about her past, she forges a relationship with three young women destined for powerful futures...if they can all survive a deadly present

SJ Clarkson directors from a screenplay she wrote with Claire Parker. Confirmed cast members include Dakota Johnson, Sydney Sweeney, Celeste O’Connor, Isabela Merced, Tahar Rahim, Mike Epps, Emma Roberts, and Adam Scott.

We believe the movie is still dated for February 16, 2024, in the U.S., but recently trailers ended with "Coming Soon" (we have, however, been able to confirm it will swing into UK cinemas on February 14).

@bobevanz - Damn... Mickey Mouse gotta wake up, situation looks bad. Luckily for them 2024 has Deadpool 3, which will make a lot of money even if it's not good, and Avatar 3.

@Urubrodi - isn't Avatar 3 moved to 2025? Only Deadpool 3 really is a big moneymaker it seems

@bkmeijer1 - Oh shit, forgot about that, you're right. Damn, Disney is screwed. They do have Inside Out 2 and the Mufasa movie but don't think they will reach a billion.

bkmeijer1 - 11/29/2023, 6:54 AM
@Urubrodi - if they market Mufasa as pretty much a Lion King 2, then I can see it come close. But other than that, I don't see it happening

@bkmeijer1 - It will need to look pretty damn good, cause the remake was pretty average. Nice visuals but worse in any possible way to the original.

@Urubrodi - It sounds messed up but it'd be fun to see Deadpool taking out the She-Hulk writers room the way he did Reynolds at the end of Deadpool 2

@Matchesz - Hahah that'd be awesome, but with these rumors of a second season of that crap, I don't see Disney having the guts to do something like that. Cause it'd be admitting that it's shit.

@Urubrodi - ''Nice visuals but worse in any possible way to the original.''

Honestly, that's a review you can apply to a lot of remakes these days.

Not sure if being credited for these movies is something you'd want in your CV.

Madame Web might fare better than The Marvels.

There is no outflopping that one.

@vectorsigma - Yep:-

But of course Josh won't comment on this but still brings up things that are irrelevant now.

@vectorsigma - I mean, despite all claims, morbius was actually close to breaking even due to it having a lower budget.

Bare minimum Sony is being smarter from a business standpoint in understanding these movies have more niche audiences and therefore don't require avengers level budgets, which they're saving for venom and spiderman.

Marvel on the other hand...

@Origame - it will be interesting to see if Marvel follows this model to get back on track.

Blade is a good starting point. Not too expensive but should not look cheap as well. Then save those big budgets in event movies.

Origame - 11/29/2023, 9:50 AM
@vectorsigma - well they also gotta decide who tf the main characters are in this saga. Then movies about them can have fairly high budgets.

But the massive near $300 mil budgets should be reserved for the avengers movies, because that's where the money comes in.

But yeah, sprinkle in an $80 mil blade movie. That'd be great.

@Sabre81 - ouch.

Remember those days when The Flash bombed and Josh was having a blast in spewing nonsense articles everyday?

Simp on DC now, it will be the next cbm hype.

At this point I have more faith in Sony-produced Marvel films than anything coming out of Marvel Studios.

Sony, if you keep filling a bag with more & more crap, it will still just be a big bag of crap.

Glad they received writing credits since they were involved with the project for years.

I don’t personally understand the hate for Morbius, and am in the minority that really enjoyed the flick. Compared to all the excess that Marvel Studios has been releasing lately, it’s far superior. It’s an interesting phenomenon when Sony’s Spider-Man Universe is more interesting to me than the Marvel Cinematic [multi]Universe[s]

What a relief- I was beginning to think that the project wasn't in good hands....
