MORBIUS Director Confirms Michael Keaton Is Playing The MCU's Vulture, Not A Variant

During an interview with CinemaBlend, Morbius director Daniel Espinosa confirmed that the Vulture in the film is the same as the one that appeared in Spider-Man: Homecoming, and not a variant.

The Living Vampire and Matt Smith's Milo will not be the only villains in Morbius. The film also features Adrian Toomes, a.k.a. the Vulture, played by Michael Keaton, who first portrayed the character in Spider-Man: Homecoming. Many were surprised to see Toomes in Morbius' teaser trailer, and fans began to speculate about how the flying villain made his way into the Venom universe.

We figured things would be cleared up with the release of Spider-Man: No Way Home, which saw multiple characters from different universes transported into the MCU — including Venom. However, every misplaced individual (aside from a small symbiote piece) seemingly returned to their respective realities at the end of the film, making Toomes' appearance in Morbius all the more puzzling. With the existence of the multiverse, though, it was assumed the character was simply a variant.

Now, we know that's not the case. The Vulture in Michael Morbius' standalone adventure is the Adrian Toomes we met in HomecomingMorbius director Daniel Espinosa gave an interview to CinemaBlend, where he was asked if Vulture was the same one introduced in the MCU, to which he replied"Yes."

When asked how that was possible, Espinosa stated that the potential for characters to travel to universes that weren't their own (and staying there) was established in No Way Home

"At the end of Venom: Let There be Carnage and Spider-Man: No Way Home, and in No Way Home itself, it is clearly established that it is possible for characters to transfer from one Multiverse to another. The events of No Way Home had the effect of transferring Venom and Vulture (and maybe others) back and forth between the MCU and the Venom Universe."

The conversation continued with some spoilers from Morbius, so we will omit them from here.

As mentioned, everyone appeared to return home at the end of No Way Home. This may confuse some viewers since it apparently contradicts the possibility of Toomes staying in another reality. However, there is precedent for this. No Way Home's post-credits scene saw Eddie Brock and Venom sent back to their world, but not without leaving a tiny piece of the symbiote in the MCU. If the alien goo was left behind, it makes sense that it wasn't the only being misplaced, and that Toomes was one of the unfortunate people to be sent to a foreign universe.

This opens up some exciting possibilities for the future of both the MCU and Sony's Spider-Man Universe. Which characters from each franchise stayed in the other? It's an intriguing question, and hopefully one we won't have to wait long to have answered given the rapid pace at which Sony's superhero series is growing.

Morbius flies into theaters on April 1st, 2022.

What do you think about Vulture being the MCU version of the character? Where do you expect his appearance in the Venom universe to go? Let us know in the comments.

That doesn't make sense. It's only established at the end that characters from other universes go back to their own. Why would Vulture be transported to another universe?

Vision85 - 3/26/2022, 8:12 AM
@Unites - why would a spell of forgetting breach the multiverse and bring people who died into the present just because they knew Peter Parker was Spiderman....and why would it also bring other Spidermen? Nothing has been established the whole thing is stupid as hell. Who cares, it was fun. This wont be I expect. On we move.

@Unites - like, Dr Strange very clearly stated what is happening with the multiverse. He didn’t “assume” or half ass explain. AND the same thing goes with fixing it.

@Unites -
It's a simple conceit. If a movie works it's in the MCU. If it doesn't it's in some variant place. Sim sala bim...Fixed!

@Vision85 - Someone didn't pay attention

- It was established that the spell "travels the dark borders between known and unknown realities", so botching it could tear holes to other universes

- The variants didn't all have to die to be pulled in, they just needed to know Spider-Man's real name is Peter Parker, AND coincidentally some of those variants (less than half) would have died back in their own universe if they weren't brought to the MCU at that moment

- that second point explains why the other Spider-Men were brought to the MCU

It's not "stupid as hell" if you pay attention 🤷🏽‍♂️

@Unites - because Sony doesn’t give a [frick] about actually telling good stories. Sony cares about putting out half-baked movies so they can retain the rights to IP. For some reason they think we want a spin off universe of Spidey villains starring in movies that feel like they were made in 2005.

Vision85
Vision85 - 3/26/2022, 3:07 PM
@lordSTALE - yeah it tells you that but it doesnt make any sense its just a line that means they can do literally anything. So therefore Vulture can be anywhere and so on as mentioned in the post I was replying to. I know you think you're being the smart one in this interaction, but you are smugly explaining make believe nonsense in a movie that isn't even consistent in its internal logic.
lordSTALE
lordSTALE - 3/26/2022, 6:59 PM
@Vision85 - Wow things in a movie not making sense in the real world 🤦🏽‍♂️

It makes perfect sense to the rules established in that fictional world, it is literally a spell that's applied to the entire universe, so obviously it would have to reach the edges. And it makes some sense that botching a spell like that could affect adjacent universes. So if the spell is all about Spidey's identity, pulling in people who know it isn't that far-fetched for a screw-up

You were just absolutely wrong about the variants needing to be dead thing. It wouldn't surprise me if you didn't watch the movie and only watched the trailers where death was implied as the reason the villains were there

The ending spell would erase Peter Parker from everyone's memories, which would undo the mistake and send the variants pulled into the MCU, back to their own universes. Vulture is from the MCU, how TF could a spell that was properly explained in the movie send a native of that universe to a different one? Why didn't it work for any of the other MCU natives who knew? That is absolutely not how it worked or was explained.

The movie is completely consistent with its logic, you're just clearly not smart enough, I mean you even admit the movie tells you everything and they didn't do anything other than what was explained

This is just Sony sloppily slapping together a Sinister Six, with absolutely no logic or sense to it 🤷🏽‍♂️
Vision85
Vision85 - 3/27/2022, 2:36 AM
@lordSTALE - Electro didn't know who Spiderman was. Tom Hardy's Venom didn't either. That's inconsistent internal logic. It's not mentioned how a spell without the time stone can bring characters from the past to the present either. It's not that this is a case of clever writing that I don't understand, It's a case of bad writing. Unless I am not smart enough to understand the part where it explained why characters that didn't know Peter was Spiderman got pulled in, in which case please explain it to me oh wise one.
lordSTALE
lordSTALE - 3/27/2022, 3:26 AM
@Vision85 - He's not the same Electro from TASM2, you might have noticed the hairline change. Doc Ock also didn't know Spider-Man was Peter when he was wearing that particular outfit in the Raimi films, also Osborn wasn't publicly known to be Green Goblin in the films. They are from universes that are almost parallel to those film universes, but clearly not entirely the same. Multiverse = Infinite Possibilities

In the horrible Venom 2 mid credits scene, Venom said he tapped into the memories of the symbiote hive-mind that spanned through different universes. He clearly tapped the knowledge that Peter Parker is Spider-Man and got pulled in from his space-time because of it. Just because you're not smart enough to understand, doesn't make it inconsistent 🤷🏽‍♂️

You're dealing with a spell that can pull people from different universes and you're worried about the time travel aspect? If you're powerful enough for extra-dimensional travel, space-time travel would no long be an obstacle. Also FYI time travel isn't only possible via the Time Stone in the MCU (see Endgame)

No you just don't understand, everything is explained properly, except Sony's clunky BS with the Venom credits scene which just requires using some logic 😬

And I already explained your last mental hurdle earlier in this comment. You're welcome

If you need anything else that was simple for me but clearly not for you, feel free to ask. There's a Loki finale explanation that could easily blow your simple mind

Kind Regards,
The Wise One ✌️😁

@lordSTALE - you are a genuine idiot. It is the same Electro, which is why he starts blue and made of energy. The new look is lazily explained by the different kind of electricity in the MCU Spidermans world. It is also the same for everyone else. You are making it make sense in your head by adding things not written into the film. Those differences aren't little clues for a super slueth to figure out. They are poor writing choices and the MCU retroactively updating unpopular design choices. You are just such an idiot, you think you're being clever. But either way, I'm done responding. Think what you want.

lordSTALE - 3/27/2022, 12:00 PM
@Vision85 - It seems like you're the genuine idiot, I'm afraid 😅

The multiverse means infinite possibilities, but you're hung up on there being an almost parallel universe to TASM universe, where Electro had similar experiences and looked like Jaime Foxx but CLEARLY is not the same Electro we met before. Him transforming back to "human form" and having yellow lightning now, is what the new electricity did for him. It only seems lazy if you're not all there upstairs 🤷🏽‍♂️

"You are making it make sense in your head by adding things not written into the film"

That is definitely one way an idiot would describe using logic 😂

Guess what else will blow your very little mind: when those villains go back they will create new branching timelines where they were cured, directly diverging from the timelines where they weren't cured that some of the other characters came from

You just watched a movie with multiple Peters Parker, there was a show with multiple Lokis where a few even looked identical, there's a movie coming out with multiple identical Doctors Strange (plus others), "What If" had multiple different versions of the same identically faced characters and also Endgame, but your brain crashes and burns at the possibility of multiple Electros and Doc Ocks that could look like Jaime Foxx and Alfred Molina respectively and have similar but ultimately different histories and timelines? And you dare to question my intelligence? 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

I'll change your comment ending to fit:

Think what you can (and that's obviously very limited)

@Vision85 - Only a truly dumb person would think that's how that would work, but at least you acknowledge that I'm CLEARLY smarter 😂

Never let it be lost or forgotten that you thought a criteria for the villains being there was that they had to have died, and you used that as criticism for the other Spider-Men being there. Massive L from the start and nothing but embarrassment for your idiocy and ignorance since then 😏🤭

@lordSTALE - what I don't get is we've established you're really smart, I get that...but everything you've said still comes across as retarded and you are making points about things I never wrote because you read my replies wrong. Also, it's like you don't understand sarcasm and your sense of humour is all of the autistic. 🤔🤔🤔 but you keep saying you're smart, and as you say the multiverse means infinate possibilities so I guess maybe you are from a universe where you're not a total bellend 🤷‍♂️

@Vision85 - To use such a (R) word on here is... interesting to say the least 🤔 It would be really awkward if someone reported that comment... but I won't 😏

And you're using such words because you set yourself up, with your speech not using any of the sarcasm signs. I caught onto it right away, but I'm all about twisting other people's own words against them, and it SOOO much easier to humiliate them when I can just use those words verbatim 🤷🏽‍♂️🤭 Congratulations, you played yourself... again 😂😂😂😂😂

Was anyone even interested in a Morbius movie? Just make a Miles Morales Spiderman, preferably off the back of Toby or Andrew's world. I'd say give Andrew a grand farewell and give Electro his black Spiderman.

@Manmarvel - I was a lot more hopeful for Sony than I should’ve been. Like hey you know what maybe each villain should get a movie franchise. Venom was obvious. Not good movies as it turned out but still good ideas and good box office. Morbius didn’t look bad to me, maybe lightning will strike twice (counting venom 1&2 as 1 franchise), but nooope. He, and Kraven, and Chameleon, and Madam Web, and all that jazz, are great characters for miles and amazing spiders to deal with, but nah, even after spiderverse and NWH, they wanna make fetch happen. Those characters are only good in the context of Spider-Man as atheist antagonist but him as our protagonist. I tried to see it their way. Their way sucks
