Academy Reveals Current #OscarsFanFavorite Leaderboard And It Includes A Couple Of Unexpected Movies

The Academy has revealed the current leaderboard for this year's "Oscars Fan Favorite" movie, and while Zack Snyder fans couldn't get Justice League any love, Army of the Dead has managed to make the cut.

Over the past few years, ratings for the Oscars have plummeted. The Academy attempted to solve the issue with the introduction of a "Best Popular Movie" award, but widespread backlash led to those plans quickly being scrapped. Now, Twitter users have been given the opportunity to vote for their favourite movie, though the winner of this "prize" won't actually win an Oscar.

An argument could be made that this makes it little more than a glorified Twitter poll, and the nature of social media means it has been hijacked to some extent.

Before learning that Zack Snyder's Justice League was ineligible due to its streaming release, #RestoreTheSnyderVerse supporters had attempted to steal a win by voting for the four-hour DC Comics adaptation. After that failed, Army of the Dead has managed to break into the list of current frontrunners (presented below in alphabetical order, not by the number of votes).

As you can see, Snyder's zombie movie is joined by Cinderella, Dune, Malignant, Minamata, The Power of the Dog, Sing 2, Spider-Man: No Way Home, The Suicide Squad, and tick, tick... Boom!

Spider-Man: No Way Home initially seemed like the obvious favourite given the backlash surrounding its lack of "Best Picture" nomination, but it was recently reported that Cinderella is the current frontrunner. It's hard not to be intrigued by how #OscarsFanFavorite will pan out, but voting closes in a couple of days, so you'd best cast your vote sooner rather than later.

This year's Academy Awards take place on March 27.

I really wanted to like Army of the Dead but I did not enjoy myself. Couldn’t have fun with it.

@regularmovieguy - was ok but a one time watch for me. Whereas DOTD was great imo.

@NoWayClunge

Not sure if it was unfocused for me but I thought it felt like Zack was throwing everything at the movie, from the Easter eggs to some of the more outlandish elements in the movie.

I didn’t find it all that visually appealing either…those lenses he used on the movie distracted tf out of me. DOTD is a top 3 or top 5 zombie flick for me. The opening is incredible.

When’re you catching The Batman?

@regularmovieguy - I had fun with it. I would rather have seen the intro as a whole movie though. The heist ended up being whatever but I enjoyed some of the lore. I at least liked it better than Army of thieves which I thought was a pretty bad heist movie overall

@Superheromoviefan - It was terrible, it was a bad copy of Aliens.

After how good the Dawn of the Dead remake was, and how they got Dave Bautista, I never expected it to be so bad...plus, it LOOKS bad, a Zack Snyder movie that LOOKS bad, that's a new one

Yes sir, me and two buds are going. Have a ticket for Dolby tomorrow but I don't think I'll want to see it right away. Might wait another week before I go again depending on how I feel about it!

the fact that tick tick boom its in that category right along with the summeer blockbusters is preposterous
their big plan to boost ratings is basically turn the oscars into the mtv movie awards?
and to think they have taken out editing ,the very same essence of cinema itself, from the emission .
the people on charge have no idea what they are doing

@NicolausCopernicus - It definitely feels like ABC is heavily leaning on them for this; most likely the pressure is coming from freaking Chapek - arbitrarily slashing costs, gouging prices and alienating fans seems to be his favorite modus operandi.

That said, the Oscar producers are also famously idiots, so who's to say. Can't believe ANYONE thought an open Twitter vote like this would work and not be hijacked by trolls.

I enjoyed Army more than most but we all know (like the article mentions) it’s only on there bc ZSJL isn’t eligible. Personally I voted for it, not really bc I think it was amazing but just for the chance to see them say Zack Snyder’s name at the Oscar’s and watch people lose their minds over it lol

Heard great things about Tick, Tick, Boom, which I'll probably catch on streaming. Dune is fantastic, but a Best Picture contender, so seems redundant. Same with Power of the Dog. I'd honestly vote The Suicide Squad, give genre films a little love. It was my favorite comic book movie in years.

@Waddles - I've got that and West Side Story (which is probably going to win BP) on my list; I'm a sucker for that Spielberg pizzazz. I wish The Last Duel made this list, because that movie was really unjustly overlooked.

I’m actually surprised that they aren’t all terrible films. There’s some really good, even artsy films, on the leaderboard.

…but also some terrible ones.

Spider-Man: No Way Home initially seemed like the obvious favourite [to win]

Only if you never heard of social media before. You know, like the people who thought this compromise was a good idea.

I just had to look up why ZS's Justice League wasn't eligible but Army of the Dead was- Since this article says it's "Due to it's streaming release." Army of the dead was a streamer as well.

Turns out that's not the case. It's because JL is considered a director's cut of a movie that was eligible when it was released in 2017.
That actually makes a bit of sense.
