Kirsten Dunst Hasn't Seen SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME Yet But Remains Optimistic About Returning As MJ

Spider-Man: No Way Home has potentially set the stage for big Spider-Verse stories moving forward, but could we see Kirsten Dunst back as Mary Jane Watson? And what's her take on the franchise's legacy?

Spider-Man: No Way Home brought back a lot of familiar faces from the franchise's past, though there was seemingly no room for love interests. Prior to the threequel's release, there had been rumours that we'd see Kirsten Dunst as Mary Jane Watson again, and while the actress denied plans for any sort of cameo, she did express interest in reprising the role.

Talking to People following her SAG Awards nomination for The Power of the Dog, Dunst was asked if she's seen the wall-crawler's latest movie yet.

"I haven't. I'm sorry!" she laughed. "I know I have to. I know [SPOILER ALERT!] Tobey's in it and it's such a huge surprise and everyone's freaking out. I will. I'll eventually watch it. You know, I'll watch it with my son, because he's starting to get into Spider-Man stuff. There's, like, a little-kid version of Spider-Man that he watches, so maybe he'll watch it with me."

"It's such a cool legacy to be a part of, and to be the first one and be a Spider-Man fan," Dunst said of the historic franchise. "I feel like that's a really special thing because these fans have lived with these movies for so long and have grown up with it. It's legacy things that feel really exciting. It's nice to be excited about something. All of us are dealing with so much right now."

"It's nice to have people want to go to the movie theater and see something that really makes their heart happy. I saw a reaction video [from a No Way Home screening] that someone sent me and I was like, 'Oh my God!' People really needed this right now — more than ever."

As for whether she'd be open to playing Mary Jane down the line, Dunst once again shared an enthusiastic response to the possibility. "Of course I would. Of course. I've been asked about that a few times. That's a no-brainer. That was a huge part of my career and my life."

With so much excitement surrounding the returning Spider-Men, now might be a good time to return to the world inhabited by Tobey Maguire's web-slinger to see what exactly his happy ending with MJ looks like. Hopefully, that will happen somewhere down the line; as of right now, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is a strong possibility, but who knows what Sony has planned!

What would you like to see from this version of MJ if she were to show up in a future movie?

I didn’t like her as Mary Jane. She seemed more like the opposite of what the comic book and 90’s cartoon gave us.

There's just too much money to be made. Sony should've already announced sequels for Maguire and Garfield.😂💰

I'm all for a happy ending Raimi-Tobey-Dunst Spider Man 4 film. I mean I would just hope they wouldn't use her as a damsel in distress role again and actually give her a role that is supportive of whatever battle Tobey has to fight instead of being rescued by him. Dump the vulture story and start fresh. Could maybe feature Miles starting out or having started out and take inspiration from the PS games.

MJ in the MCU, though in distress at some moments actually proved to be helpful to Spidey and that was refreshing to see that even someone with no powers or vigilante experience assist spidey in the battle and just as emotional support.

I hope Zendaya comes back in the MCU movies as well she just seemed like everyone's dream girlfriend/best friend. Also, of course bring Ned back since he's awesome. Peter deserves a happy ending with those 3

Their time has passed. I'm only invested in the continuation of Tom's story as of now. That new suit and status quo is banging.

@JFerguson -

Agreed. I love the raimi films and even though Spider-Man 3 was weird, it ended on a really good note about forgiveness and the journey of Peter, mj, and Harry came to an end.

It was obviously hinted that MJ would forgive Peter and it was obvious that he forgave her and now NWH makes it clear that they made it work. That’s good enough for me.

At the least, Sony should do a streaming service series of Raimi's Spider-Man. Would be better than a movie every 3 years anyway.

Aww did anyone actually read her words here?? A really lovely statement and I agree with her.

As for returning to the Raimi-verse? It's a yes from me.

We actually don't need her back. Thanks for your sudden interest though.

Watch it with her son? I get it, makes sense...but its unfortunate thats what it takes for her to sit down and watch it.

Doesn't sound like she's interested to me, that if it wasn't for these movies being a hot item right now that she would otherwise dismiss it... maybe I'm reading too much into her statements.
