MOONFALL Director Roland Emmerich Doubles Down On Superhero Movie Criticism: "It's Just Very Boring To Me"

Moonfall director Roland Emmerich has once again expressed his disdain for superhero movies, and this time he specifically targets a certain Friendly Neighbourhood Wall-Crawler. Take a look...

In a recent interview, Moonfall director Roland Emmerich bemoaned the state of modern filmmaking, blaming major studio blockbusters - superhero movies, in particular - for "ruining our industry" with their perceived lack of originality. Now, the "Master of Disaster" is at it again.

Moonfall has not been performing very well at the box office, and Emmerich was asked the challenges of releasing non IP-driven movies in the current climate while chatting to Discussing Film.

"Well, it gets harder and harder. I'm really not very happy about that. How many superhero movies can you make? They're making like, 7 or 8 Spider-Man [films]? It's just very boring for me, as a filmmaker. You don't want to keep making the same movies over and over," said the filmmaker, who has been making the same movie over and over for 30 years.

In all seriousness... they've made 9 Spider-Man films.

This is not the first time Emmerich has taken aim at the genre, and even said that he likes to watch Marvel movies "on planes in order to fall asleep" in a previous interview. He's obviously entitled to his opinion, but some might say his comments are a tad hypocritical. Others might suggest that they demonstrate a staggering lack of self awareness.

What do you guys make of Emmerich's take on superhero movies? Do you think he has a point? Be sure to let us know in the usual place.

@superherodevourer - dudes a [frick]ing hypocrite. He's been making the same disaster films his entire career. He even helped usher in these massive scale movies, Man of Steel and Avengers and almost every comic book movie CGI fest final battle has his direct thumb print. He has himself to blame.

@ElricReturns - it also adds a depth of richness that he is basically a hack level ‘talent’ who actually manages to make Michael Bay look good. At least with Bay you know that every single penny (and then some) of that budget is gonna be fully realized on screen.

I'm getting bored with superhero movies, and even I know he's full of shit.

I wonder if he’s watched his own movies. Moonfall actively tried to be worst thing I’ve seen in recent memory

He’s not technically wrong about the struggles of non IP franchises making it big, but let’s not act like this hasn’t been a struggle since the late 90s. Superheroes have definitely dominated the market, but it had to. for better or for worse.

@MonkeyDLuffy - movies and tv shows not comics

@MonkeyDLuffy - Right now though its because the older audiences are not going out to theaters.

Long term otoh you're right about IP dominating but the cost of production and P & A plus the risk cost of a failure dictate taking fewer chances overall.

@JDL - Not exactly true. I'm in the older demographic and have seen all the recently released Marvel movies in the theatre. Already have my tickets for The Batman as well. And I'm not a one off. Every screening I went to I saw others in my age range, some even older watching the same flicks as me. The only thing keeping people from going to the theatres is one, a film worth going to see and secondary this Covid crisis. They can blame Superhero flicks all they want, but that's just a cop-out for them not producing a product that people really want to see.

@MonkeyDLuffy - I think it's hilarious that a director that's barely 2 steps above Uwe Boll is complaining about this. The fact that it's this generic hack making so much noise is farcical. Make better movies. The trailers to this actively kept me away. Terrible.
JDL
JDL - 2/13/2022, 8:17 PM
@Mugens - Of course it's not 100%. That said the industry tracking firms are reporting that older age groups are attending significantly less. This isn't going to hurt a CBM at all but for a movie that skews significantly older it's brutally bad.

I would read this advice on movie making from Roland Emmerich, but I'm late for my driving lesson with Stevie Wonder.

The guy whose only half-decent movie was turned into a better tv-series (which he is clearly salty about) is throwing some serious shade here.

I think he’s trying to make headlines so that more people will see his movie. I think he knows exactly what he’s doing and doesn’t actually dislike the superhero genre. Smart move if that’s the case

Says the guy who made Independence Day, a film he’s tried to remake spiritually and literally in some form for almost 30 years.

His legacy is contributing to the term “popcorn movie.”

It’s like saying Taco Bell isn’t real food while pushing Burger King.

Roland Emmerich criticizing superhero genre for being repetitive, generic and ruining cinema? Oh, that's rich. What, was Uwe Boll too busy to comment?

Firs off, I'm sincerely impressed by his apparent lack of self-awareness.

Secondly, after what he did to Godzilla, he really shouldn't be talking about other people's movies.

And finally, you'd think a man who has been making the same movie for more than 3 decades would have perfected the formula by now, but no, he just gets worse.

Yeah, this is what blows my mind: how has every disaster movie he's made been worse than his previous one? 🤦🏽‍♂️

Every movie he has done since Independence day (which was carried by Smith and Goldblum) is boring and generic.

Bad CGI and awful writing and just the same old end of the world spiel imaginable. But go off Roland!
