SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME Almost Included Venom In The Final Battle; Writers Address Apparent Plot Hole

Spider-Man: No Way Home's writers have revealed that they considered including Venom in the final battle, while also addressing an apparent plot hole. Needless to say, MAJOR SPOILERS for the movie follow!

Spider-Man: No Way Home brings back a lot of big names from the franchise's past, though there were some noteworthy omissions. For starters, both Kirsten Dunst's Mary Jane Watson and Emma Stone's Gwen Stacy didn't appear despite rumours to the contrary; that disappointed a lot of fans, but there were versions of the movie with...well, pretty much everyone in it.

"Let’s write the script that is the kitchen sink and we’ll just act like we were going to get everything we wish for," co-writer Chris McKenna recently told Variety. "And like Peter’s wish, it became a nightmare, and it required very, very talented people to help us not die at the end."

"We went down different roads with different characters that just didn’t fit," he continued. "We can’t get into the details of that because it might be the kind of thing where they’ll find a way to explore those ideas. So I’d hate to spoil anything, because I think we had a lot of fun."

Co-writer Erik Sommers agrees, adding: "The first draft, we bit off more than we could chew."

It sure would be fun to read those earlier drafts, but having seen Spider-Man: No Way Home, it feels like the writers probably made the right decision. Elsewhere in the interview, they confirmed that Jon Watts directed Venom: Let There Be Carnage's mid-credits scene and the one we saw at the end of this movie. The writers also admitted that Eddie Brock being in the final battle was "definitely discussed."

As for that apparent plot hole regarding how Venom was pulled into the MCU alongside those who know Peter Parker is Spider-Man (there is no Spidey on his world), McKenna has an explanation for curious fans. "The idea is that the symbiote has knowledge of other universes," he reveals. "Buried in his brain is some knowledge of that connection."

Putting Venom and Spider-Man in the same world but not having them meet seems baffling on the surface, but it appears the reason for that was to bring the symbiote into the MCU. How the alien reaches New York City from Mexico remains to be seen, though it's hard to believe the tease would have been included if it's going nowhere. Then again, we still haven't seen Scorpion after Spider-Man: Homecoming!

I'm just glad Leslie Nielsen's Venom is out of the MCU after just 2 short post credit scenes. Bye bye.

Now give me a good Venom in the MCU!

@Moriakum - apologize. Leslie Nielsen’s Venom would’ve been the best character IN the MCU.

@TheWalkingCuban - I agree. Leslie Nielsen was the man. But you get what I meant by call this Venom Leslie Nielsen.

@Moriakum - that he tried to be as goofy and funny as him but sucked

@Moriakum -

I honestly saw that as a complete cop out.

Could have just introduced the symbiote for the first time if in fact Marvel is working towards a Secret Wars film.

But I guess with this new symbiote, hopefully its acquired by the FF, and they keep it in containment, Peter meets the FF (we get the Amazing Spidey #1 Cover shot), and he acquires it similarly from Secret Wars.

Kinda glad we don't get to see this Venom go against Tom's Spider-Man. Kinda hope the off-shoot finds it way to Harry Osborn and we'll get a Ultimate Spider-Man Venom/Red Goblin situation going on

@bkmeijer -

Absolutely not. Not yet. Let’s please get Eddie Brock done right first before we get into the other Venom hosts.

I already heard people talking about getting Flash Thompson’s Venom, which seriously almost made me throw up.

@SatsuiNoJXA - I doubt Venom 3 is gonna do Brock a lot of justice, and I'm not sure how much I wanna see a third Brock iteration in the MCU.

Big no to Flash as Venom too though, I just don't see that work with the MCU version at all.

The latter just wouldn’t make sense.
I just want to see the symbiote done right. Right voice, Symbiote logo on his fhest and with an Eddie Brock that has a deep seeded hatred for Spider-Man. Give me 90s TAS Venom with a bit of First Appearance of Venom. I wanna see him stalk Peter, and whoever he decides to get close to. I want to see mind games. No humor. Just straight up haunt Peter day in and day out until their battle.

@SatsuiNoJXA - oh yeah I definitely wanna see all those things too, only difference being that I don't really mind who the symbiote ends up bonding with (as long as it is a character we haven't seen before, unlike Flash)

@SatsuiNoJXA - I just don't think they'll do Eddie Brock this soon after Hardy. I think Harry is more likely.

"The idea is that the symbiote has knowledge of other universes," he reveals. "Buried in his brain is some knowledge of that connection."

Plot convenience to ITS FINEST, but sure, we'll take it.

What about Electro tho? Got an answer for that as well?

@Doomsday8888 - Say what you want but this is not something that they pulled out of their ass since I believe the symbiotes do possess some kind of shared knowledge across the multiverse.

Yeah, right before dying, he got his haircut. By Peter Parker! Also his throat cut.

@Doomsday8888 - as for the electro, maybe harry told him about peter. I don't know, I only saw the movie once.

I'm not an avid Venom comicbook reader and just from distance, i kind of feel sick even watching what Cates is doing/did but i know shit ton of people dig that edgy stuff, same for Scott Snyder's Batman who keks, but i digress...

To me, it looked like a last half-ass attempt to steer the ship right to connect the Venom movie (with its post-credits scene) with NWH.

Manmarvel - 12/30/2021, 7:35 AM
@Doomsday8888 - I think they could have on screen explained this if they would have had Topher Grace setting at the bar in the end credits scene and had a short dialog between venom voices.

Or simply just have HIS Venom instead of Hardy's!

BOOM, problem solved!

Just like Dock Ock, Goblin etc... he gets picked up by Dr.Strange's magic before he dies, leaves a bit of Venom in the MCU and then goes back to his timeline.

So simple and in line with the overall plot.

AYO Disney, y'all should pay US! :P
