SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME Becomes Sixth Highest Grossing Movie At U.S. Box Office This Weekend As THE 355 Bombs

It's been another interesting weekend at the North American box office, with Spider-Man: No Way Home once again swinging to #1, while Simon Kinberg's (Dark Phoenix) The 355 proves itself a massive flop...

Spider-Man: No Way Home continues to dominate the North American box office, earning an estimated $30 million this weekend. That's actually better than how the last few Star Wars movies performed during their fourth weekends after opening in December, and by close of business on Sunday, the Sony Pictures/Marvel Studios threequel will have grossed a whopping $666.5 million.

That makes it the sixth highest-grossing movie at the domestic box office, usurping Titanic

Is Spider-Man: No Way Home a blip on the radar? A one-off box office hit before we start seeing movies underperform causing another wave of delays thanks to those rising COVID-19 cases? No one seems quite sure right now, but Deadline's Anthony D'Alessandro makes a great point in his piece.

"It's an event that plays to all quads and sub-quads and underscores how you can still draw audiences away from their sofas with the right mass-appealing product," the trade says of this latest Spider-Man movie's unprecedented succes, "even if we’re freaked out over the variant."

One movie that has flopped this weekend is Simon Kinberg's female-led The 355. Why any studio would trust him with any sort of high profile project is hard to say, but with a dismal 26% on Rotten Tomatoes, it looks set to gross just $4.3 million this weekend. A single digit debut is never good, and while it has earned a B+ CinemaScore, its $75 million budget might have made it a better fit for streaming.

So, Spider-Man: No Way Home continus to reigns supreme. Until The Batman arrives in early March, we won't truly know if its success if a one-off, but Uncharted should be a good test next month. With Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg in lead roles, it has all the makings of a box office hit. We'll see.

Closing in on 1.5 billion ww

@TheWalkingCuban - it topped Age of Ultron, so Frozen II up next. Wonder if it'll top Avengers, or maybe even Jurassic World

@TheWalkingCuban - 1.6 was my prediction. These are amazing numbers with Omicron blowing up shortly after the film released.

@GeneralZod
def avengers very soon. Probably by Monday. So it did like homecoming in the sense that yes, it had drop that shortened its legs from force awakens to TLJ percentages, meaning it would end at about 720ish but THEN it’s legs strengthened and it can now end up about 800, it’s fluctuating sure but check it: it’s starting to open in territories that were closed. Japan and Philippines, maybe even your place soon BK. So with strong domestic legs and more territories, not to mention that it could have Frozen level legs in Japan, this joint could reach 1.7 passing lion king and jw.

@GeneralZod - basically it has hobbit 1 or Aquaman legs instead of the 4 big recent December Star Wars films. If that holds, then yeah. Bout 800 domestic. I’m truly expecting somewhere around 1 billion foreign. That makes 1.7 billion very realistic

@TheWalkingCuban - 8 domestic is going to be a VERY heavy lift.

Love to see it happen but that will require some serious attendance in the historically worst performance stretch of the calendar year.

@SauronthePower - This is true, it would have to stick to the legs it has right now which are better legs than it had I the past two weekends. It could either keep these legs or a weaken again, But even with the weak legs that it had it would’ve made 715 to 730, somewhere in that range, so now if it weakens again, it would be above that, Even if it doesn’t reach 800. I’m going to call at 750. I would love 100 but 750 is my guess. With 900ish foreign. So at least 1.65 billion

@TheWalkingCuban - I'm still kinda surprised Lion King did so well back when that was released. Guess just like with Jurassic World it had a major nostalgia factor

@bkmeijer - exactly that

@TheWalkingCuban - agree on all fronts.

I could see 780 domestic given the lack of competition but winter misery, Omicron, time away from up-front are all going to come in to play very heavily

@SauronthePower - That’d be a lovely number. With foreign 200 ahead of domestic and widening the gap, I can see 1.1 billion foreign. So somewhere around 1.9 billion ww

The film’s performance amidst the pandemic is simply incredible. Japan and the Phillipines finally get the movie this week so expect the box official total to rise.

The trailers for Uncharted haven’t really impressed me but I can see it being a decent hit with Tom Holland coming off one of the biggest movies of all-time. It won’t be a billion dollar movie but I don’t see it flopping either.

I’m excited to see how The Batman performs. I think it has a shot at $1 billion if it manages to blow everyone away and get incredible word of mouth but only time will tell. With Multiverse of Madness moving to May and Turning Red going to streaming, it has all of March to itself.

@MovieMonster - oh snap more countries rolling in can take it to 2 billion especially if japan loves it with like Frozen type legs

A little off topic but I saw the kingsman last night and it was so stupid but god damn did it have 2 awesome fight scenes! And 1 surprise twist with a character no one saw coming that deserves some credit.

The 355 flop was predictable. No promotional campaigns in the last two months, facebook and twitter accounts connected to the movie practically dead.
