SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME Has Failed To Qualify For 2022 BAFTA Film Awards

In the midst of Sony Pictures' planned Oscar push for Spider-Man: No Way Home, it's been revealed that the critically acclaimed blockbuster has failed to qualify for this year's BAFTA Film Awards...

Deadline reports that Spider-Man: No Way Home has failed to meet the necessary eligibility criteria for this year's BAFTA (British Academy of Film and Television Arts) Film Awards.

It appears a Sony Pictures error is to blame because the studio didn't upload the blockbuster to BAFTA's online viewing platform, "BAFTA View," in time to be considered for the awards ceremony. We know Sony is looking to secure a "Best Picture" push for Spider-Man: No Way Home at the Oscars, so this is a definite missed opportunity (the BAFTAs are the UK equivalent of the Academy Awards).

"Spider-Man: No Way Home did not meet the eligibility criteria for the EE British Academy Film Awards 2022 and therefore did not qualify for entry," a statement issued by BAFTA earlier today confirms. "As outlined in our rulebook, all films must be made available to voting members on BAFTA View prior to Round One voting closing to ensure fairness and parity for all titles and the film was not made available by the distributor."

It's possible Sony wasn't willing to make Spider-Man: No Way Home available on this streaming platform because of piracy concerns (Oscar favourites tend to leak online via screeners on a yearly basis) or because they feel this is not the optimum way to experience Jon Watts' epic finale to this trilogy. However, rules are rules, so it looks like the threequel won't be part of the show.

Chances are it's too late to fix this issue, which is a shame considering the movie features some great British actors like Tom Holland, Alfred Molina, Benedict Cumberbatch, and you-know-who.

Will you be rooting for Spider-Man: No Way Home at this year's Oscars?

Best picture push is an obvious marketing scheme to help make the movie look more prestigious to a demographic.

I loved NWH as a Spider-Man fan, but this awards push is ridiculous to me. NWH doesn't need Oscars or BAFTA recognition to validate it.

No it doesn’t. But it would be a nice mushroom tipped, cock slap to the face of all those pretentious, “ComicBookFilms aren’t real films” filmmakers, who shun and pigeonhold the genre as just popcorn movies.

Dredd97 - 1/10/2022, 12:37 PM
Haha and? It's a popcorn movie. These rarely get nominated for this stuff anyway. Visuals and technical stuff makes sense. Unless it's groundbreaking, which it wasn't, it's not gonna get a Star Wars type sweep

Meh.

Solid Spidey film anyway. Doesn't need Oscar awards and Whatever.

Well, I guess the movie is really going to suffer without this prestigious honor.

Whatever. The only award this film deserves is like an MTV or Nickelodeon Kids Choice Awards. It was a fun film and great to see people returning, but its not a prestigious film beyond its box office success.

Not winning or even being nominated because of quality is one thing, but damn losing out because of a clerical error just seems like such a shame.

I would’ve avoided it too because you know someone would’ve leaked the movie and spoiled the it just like how it was spoiled in the first 24 hours it was released in the USA. I think Sony did their best to keep things secret as long as possible and Andrew Garfield deserves an award for all the lies he told to try to keep his role a secret.

Award shows are for films that nobody watches and are financial failures. So they make these award shows to make them feel better even though the big successful film finance the smaller films.

Award shows are corrupt popularity contest💁.

The Golden globes were so obviously corrupt that they stopped airing them on tv🤦

Oscars are next👀

@AmazingFILMporg - so why did Titanic, Avatar and Return of the King that all made like $2 billion between them get a load of oscars?

Its common knowlege the oscars are corrupt. Those gilms are exceptions not the rule.

Who cares, the award shows are massive circle jerks where the winner is normally determined by financial incentives.

@Scarilian - Always someone with the "who cares" comment. Obviously the studios and people who actually worked on the film care, that's why they do award pushes. Who cares what you think? People who have real stakes in these films want to be recognized for their work with prestigious awards, regardless of what random people like yourself think of said awards.

The only thing stronger than the nostalgia power of a three generation Spider-Man film is Sony’s incompetence.

@BroskiTroski -
As yes, Sony... who made $600m+ PROFIT in 2021 compared to Disney's combined film LOSES of around $400m+

Remind us again why Sony is the incompetent one when it's the Sony characters people watched NWH for?
BroskiTroski
BroskiTroski - 1/10/2022, 11:28 PM
@Scarilian - First of all, calling Spider-man a Sony character is like saying Luke Skywalker is a Disney character. It's technically correct but let's not give too much credit.

Second, comicbook movie fans are slobbering, easy-to-impress children. When braindead movies like the Venom movie can make $850 million it becomes more science than art to become big in this market. It just so happens that No Way Home was a good idea and a good movie.

Finally, none of this has jack to do with anything because I am talking about their incompetence as artists. As business people they're good, but literally who cares in a day and age where Transformers films make bank.

So the BAFTA voters couldn't go to the cinemas and instead need special treatment with BAFTA view? That seems kinda pretentious
