SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME Has Now Passed AVATAR To Become Third-Biggest Movie Ever Domestically

We knew this was the next milestone for the movie, and Spider-Man: No Way Home has now officially surpassed James Cameron’s Avatar to become the third-highest grossing release of all time domestically.

Spider-Man: No Way Home has now officially become the third highest-grossing movie of all time at the domestic box office, unseating James Cameron's mighty Avatar to claim its spot.

Analysts believed Sony Pictures' block-busting threequel had a very good chance of catching Avatar, and sure enough, after taking in an additional $1 million on Monday, the wall-crawler and his amazing friends passed the sci-fi epic's $760.5 million at the North American box office.

This is a spectacular feat, but No Way Home's unprecedented "pandemic era" performance may stop here. The movie would need to amass another $100 million in domestic ticket sales to catch Avengers: Endgame ($858 million) and claim the No. 2 spot, and quite a bit more to bump Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($936 million) to take first place.

“Though Spider-Man: No Way Home benefits from a much higher average ticket price than ‘Avatar, this does not detract from the enormity of this achievement coming during a pandemic-impacted marketplace,” says Paul Dergarabedian, a senior media analyst with Comscore. “It would have been unimaginable just a few months ago to think that the latest ‘Spider-Man’ film would even have a shot a leapfrogging over ‘Avatar,’ which has been a mainstay on box office Mt. Olympus for over a decade.”

Spider-Man: No Way Home is currently the sixth-highest grossing movie of all time globally with an astonishing $1.8 billion.

Oh wow, I heard from a pretty reliable source that this definitely wouldn't ever happen 😏

As expected, this movie's BO performance has been ruthless! Whoever was deetzy enough to think it wouldn't break that barrier must have had their standards frozen in mid 2010's or something.

@DrReedRichards - It came down to the MCU fans being willing to embrace the Sony variants as canonical. I and others didn't like the idea. I and others were proved wrong. But that wasn't a matter of being ditzy. Just badly underestimating the tolerance of the MCU fan. And of course its a pretty good movie.

@lordSTALE - Dude your post is awesome!
I'm so happy for Spidey, and so happy that Cameron, the egomaniac, has been unseated by Marvel. Again.

I was referencing the same user that the thread's first comment is addressing, mate. Before her current Quinn moniker, she's had other usernames like the ones I typed in bold.

Nothing wrong with having low expectations, though, especially in this post-Covid day and age. But to actively wish against it, only to see said spite miserably fail? Priceless.

@DrReedRichards - Frankly I had never watched either of the previous Fox Spiderman movie series. I admit to being a bit biased in that I wanted Spidey to come home.

If what I am seeing is what I think I am seeing Feige played way nicer than he had to. Imo he bailed Sony out. YMMV.

Good lord, I remember when Endgame fought tooth and nail to dethrone Avatar and it was a question of IF it even could.

Now we have No Way Home casually passing it during a pandemic. Unreal.

Goes to show the true power of utilizing nostalgia juuuuuuuuust right. Because, come on, it's barely a competently written film. But then again, neither was Avatar.

@ElricReturns -

There are fans of amazing Spider-Man and the raimi films who aren’t even fans of the MCU and so when you combine those forces, plus spidey is just way more loved than Eternals or Shang Chi (😂), then you have a recipe for a hit.

People forget that Avatar also had insane ticket prices for the time with the RealD price tag plus all it’s re-releases.

Imagine what NWH would have done pre pandemic...might have even beaten EG

@ElricReturns

I'm still questioning whether the pandemic hurt the movie. It was initially scheduled to come out in the summer, and no doubt it would've made incredible $$$. But it also doesn't have the competition it would've.

Prolly would've made its money in a much faster time? It's hard to say.

Regardless it has done incredible.

Precisely. With China, it would have surpassed EG I think.

Especially with the sequels on the way, James Cameron will just keep re-releasing Avatar to try to continually take the spot back.

That's easy when:
people have nothing better to do during this super real pandemic but sit and watch movies

When theater prices are way more expensive

No competition

Nostalgia addicts.

Well deserved. Can’t wait to get this on digital to watch a second time. I wanted to do repeat theater visits but between time, money, and Covid I figured I’d just wait and enjoy it on my big ass tv in a recliner lol
