@Ha1frican - It's always going to be a calculation, I think. If Chinese censors don't really have a problem with the movie as-is, then a minor tweak or two (even if those tweaks only appear in the version released in China) could mean an extra 30 million dollars. And most studios won't turn away 30 million free dollars.

The problem is that No Way Home isn't a model that other films can easily follow. It's not like it's popular because of some specific subject matter that Chinese censors object to.

These studios have an incentive to remain on good enough terms with the Chinese government to make a Chinese release possible, and I don't see that changing because of something like this. (It may well be changing for other reasons, though, because the global creative community and the Chinese government are increasingly at odds, and Hollywood won't blackball every Chloé Zhao.)

Broader view, though, I'm not sure this drifting apart is a good thing. Scientific endeavors, art, and sports have been ways to bridge cultural and policy gaps between nations even while their governments have been openly hostile. The people of the world can and should be part of a global cultural community (in my view). Of course, there need to be policy changes (as many governments are openly monstrous), but that end goal of a global community is always what I set my sights on. And enjoying a Spider-Man movie in Beijing or a Stephen Chow movie is Boise is part of that.

@dragon316 - at the worldwide it's not even gonna come clear, but domestically it only needs 30 million. Should be doable I guess
