SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME Producer Plans To Focus On "Quality And Emotion" Not "Spectacle" In SPIDER-MAN 4

Spider-Man: No Way Home is one of the biggest Marvel movies ever, but with the fourth instalment, producer Amy Pascal hopes to focus more on "quality and emotion" rather than trying to top this movie.

Spider-Man: No Way Home is easily the web-slinger's biggest movie to date, and given the sheer number of surprises, it's impossible to imagine how the planned Spider-Man 4 will top it. The temptation will surely be to go bigger, but producer Amy Pascal has another, much better idea.

"Not every Spider-Man movie is going to be a multitude of characters," she explained during a recent interview with The New York Times. "That approach was right for this one."

"You can’t think about topping yourself in terms of spectacle," the veteran producer said of the Spider-Man franchise's future. "Otherwise movies just get larger and larger for no reason, and it’s not a good result. But we do want to always try and top ourselves in terms of quality and emotion."

While it's obviously too soon for Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios to reveal anything about Spider-Man 4, Pascal went on to emphasise the importance of Peter Parker to any upcoming stories. "Kevin [Feige] and I never want to lose sight of one thing: Peter Parker. That he’s a normal kid," Pascal explained. "That he is orphaned over and over again"

"That he’s a teenager, so everything in his life is at a heightened pitch and everything matters more than anything. That he’s fueled by goodness and guilt. That he’s striving for a greater cause, and he’s vilified by the press." After watching Spider-Man: No Way Home, we're sure you'll agree that there's a lot a fourth chapter can do with each of the points Pascal chooses to highlight here.

The biggest question for many fans will be who the next villain is, especially after this instalment goes through so many of them. There are still plenty of compelling possibilities, though, including some who still haven't make their respective big screen debuts (Scorpion instantly springs to mind, for example).

What do you hope to see next from Spider-Man on the big screen?

I think its time to have Kraven in the next one. Would be interesting to see Spidey be actively hunted.

Wilding Scorpion as the next villain is an awful idea. /sigh

@McMurdo - what's wrong with scorpion? Especially since this is stated to be a smaller scale movie and scorpion has been teased but completely ignored this whole time.

@McMurdo - He doesn't need to be the main villain but could work as an obstacle to overcome, maybe hired by the main villain (e.g. Kingpin).

@Origame - just a boring [frick]ing villain just my opinion

@McMurdo - I have some thoughts regarding Spider-man's future in movies and since we don't have the editorial section on this site anymore, I'm just going to write them here. SPOILERS for No Way Home.

1. Hidden clues to the lost past.
The spell that wipes out Peter's existence from minds of everyone on the planet probably effected all regarding data as well, like pictures, videos, official documents etc. But I don't think it effected the objects that aren't directly holding information. I think it will be Black Dahlia necklaces and Lego Death Stars that'll unlock missing parts of their past narrative for some characters.

2. Mac Gargan will be the Venom of MCU.
In the mid-credit scene we saw Eddie Brock leave a pieces of Venom symbiote to MCU before returning to his own universe. This pieces will undoubtedly be the Venom symbiote of MCU. Like in the comics, it will first attach to Peter, before finding a new host. I think that instead of bringing in another version of Eddie Brock, symbiote will bond with Mac Gargan, who also did a tenure as Venom in the comics. For a villainous Venom, Gargan seems logical choice, since he is already an established bad guy in MCU. Whether or not Gargan first becomes Scorpion, maybe. Perhaps Scorpion is the villain Peter beats while wearing the symbiote himself. Anyhow, if Gargan becomes the Scorpion, it will probably be very brief.

3. If there is going to be a Goblin in MCU, it will be Ned.
Peter's best friend Ned Leeds is an amalgamation of a few characters from the comics. He is mostly based on Miles Morales best friend Ganke, he has taken the role of Harry Osborn as Peter best friend in the MCU and he is a namesake of Ned Leeds from the comics. Considering that in the comics Harry turned in Green Goblin and Ned Leeds was one of the Hobgoblins, I'd imagine there's a good chance for Ned to become a goblin. With the whole amnesia plotline, there is are a multiple good ways how that can be written. It would also have nice emotional stakes for the audience as we have now really seen how good and close friend Peter and Ne were up until now.

4. There is Norman Osborn in MCU as well.
In No Way Home it was suggested that Norman Osborn might not even exist in MCU. Oscorp didn't, that much was confirmed. I think the there might be Norman Osborn in MCU as well, he just isn't a public figure. Norman Osborn has been many thing s in comics and after No Way Home it would not be surprising at all if MCU's Norman Osborn is different version from the one we've already seen. I personally like the fan theory that Christopher McDonald's undisclosed role in Secret Invasion -series is actually Norman Osborn. A Dark Reign type of mastermind Norman menacing over MCU's future could a fascinating way to go.

@Odin - I think Ned would’ve made more sense before this movie or NWH. Before the mind wipe, I could see him being a super personal, surprising villain. Not only that, but I just think we know too much about him now. We see how utterly goofy and devoted to Peter he is, and I don’t think that guy would break bad. But also, there’s the possibility that no Peter in his life could change him 🤷‍♂️

@McMurdo - Marvel Studios has more than enough ability to make boring villains into compelling ones. They did so with Vulture brilliantly.

Symbiote suit, Black Cat, Daredevil, Kingpin and Scorpion/Kraven is what I would like for the next one. As much as I like the characters, keep Ned and MJ out of it for the time being.

@Urubrodi - Keep half ass MJ and Ned out period going forward.

@Jeight8 - Agreed. I do wish for them to return eventually, but at least for the next movie I feel like it's a good opportunity to explore some of the other many side characters he has on his stories. Plus, it will be interesting seeing how Peter will go on in a world where no one knows who he is. It could end up being the most "depressing" Spider-Man movie yet.

@Urubrodi - yeah I think those two time is up as far as this franchise moves forward. We might get Ned back as Hobgoblin at some point, maybe like an opening credits throwaway villain or something but “Michelle Williams Jane-Watson” is more than likely all the way done.
OmegaBlack13
OmegaBlack13 - 12/19/2021, 12:25 PM
@WruceBayne - You think they would have a major character turning into a supervillain be off screen and only fought in the opening credits??
WruceBayne
WruceBayne - 12/19/2021, 12:39 PM
@OmegaBlack13 - the reason I say that is because Ned’s already established and we’ve already had a Goblin in this universe. A second goblin could be looked at as kind of redundant.

Three to four solid action scenes, Felicia Hardy, college, two villains, Daredevil

I mean, I fully expect 4 to be of a significantly smaller scale and scope considering where things ended. But No Way Home balanced spectacle with emotion and quality stroytelling brilliantly.

@DoubleD - only if they get a really good writer since There Will Be Carnage was incredibly bad… and that’s coming from someone who actually liked the first film for what it was.
