SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME Star Tom Holland Clarifies Second Trilogy Reports; "[There] Are Conversations"

Spider-Man: No Way Home star Tom Holland has addressed recent reports that he's been enlisted for another trilogy of Spider-Man movies, while clarifying his potential future as the MCU's Peter Parker...

Spider-Man: No Way Home has been a huge box office hit, not to mention the best-reviewed movie of 2021 (earning it some well-deserved Oscar buzz). While franchise producer Amy Pascal has confirmed that a new trilogy is in development, Tom Holland - who hinted during the threequel's press tour that he might be ready to walk away from Peter Parker - has now clarified where he stands.

"We've had conversations about the potential future of Spider-Man, but at the moment they are conversations," Holland tells Entertainment Weekly. "We don't know what the future looks like."

Acknowledging that Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige and Sony Pictures Chairman Tom Rothman are "thinking of something" with Pascal, Holland claims that "at this moment I don't know what that is" before adding he's "not really thinking about the future." The actor concluded by saying, "I'm still riding the wave of the success of the film and enjoying that."

Last December, Rothman confirmed that Benedict Cumberbatch's presence in Spider-Man: No Way Home means Sony is "committed" to "one more lend back" with the web-slinger. Many fans believe this means we'll see Tobey Maguire's web-slinger in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, but with Holland continuing to play coy, it's becoming increasingly difficult to predict the future.

There have to be some big plans for Spider-Man after this latest movie's unprecedented success, so here's hoping Holland is either looking to maintain the surprise or simply hoping to negotiate a major new deal.

What do you hope the future holds in store for the MCU's webbed wonder?

He sounds like an athlete that doesn't know if he wants to stay with his team or not after winning a championship. Almost like Kawhi after the Raptors won, lol

As long as they build to Venom or/and The Sinister Six.

@marvel72 - or both? Kingpin in 4, Venom and Kraven in 5, and Sinister Six (Ock, Vulture, Mysterio, Shocker, Scorpion, Hobgoblin) in 6 is what I like to see

Everything Tom is saying about not coming back makes me think of two possible scenarios:

1) This is a public negotiation tactic, using the success of the movie and his own popularity to try and get a better deal going forward
2) He's exhausted from playing the character so much (6 times in as many years) and needs a break before coming back, kinda like when Daniel Craig said he'd rather kill himself than play James Bond again after Spectre, and that with a bit of time to get over it and explore other roles and projects he'll be back as Spidey in a few years.

Or, you know, both, but I definitely don't think he's really calling it quits. And actually, I think I'd like them to give him a few years off and take a break from Spidey after NWH. Usually when a movie does this well the studio will immediately greenlight a follow up and rush it into production and the end result isn't great, but taking their time will hopefully help them create a worthy sequel to everything this movie set up.

Plus, with Peter now being a more traditional Spider-Man, and with an entire origin trilogy under his belt, I think it'd be cool if next time we see him he's been living this new life of his for a few years and when we catch up to him he's a little more experienced and mature, and giving Tom a few years off to try new things and get a little older would only add to that.

So maybe when we see him next Peter's in college, probably a little later than he planned thanks to the events of NWH, he's kinda lonely and stuff and spends all his free time as Spider-Man, and maybe we pick things up when MJ and Ned return to NYC after going to uni at MIT and the emotional through-line is Peter finally reconnecting with them and whether or not their relationships will ever get back to the way they were before their memories were erased (and how they feel about having their memories erased if they find out).

@AC1 - I mean, if you're comparing it to the Daniel Craig situation, then he most likely only came back because they were killing off his version of bond.

a) where is that banner image from? I know it's not official, but it looks damn good.

b) he's definitely gonna return for another trilogy. These conversations are probably what's it is gonna be about and which studio gets what profits, because no way they wouldn't continue such a partnership like this.

Who's looking forward to the next spidey? It's a weird thought but it's also inevitable, just like Iron Man lol

I've said it before I'll say it again: If Holland walks away from the role, I'd be fine with that. He concluded his arc from really what was "Spider-Boy" to his decision at the end of NWH that turned him into "Spider-Man". If he swung off into the sunset, I'd be okay with that. Bring on Miles Morales!

However, if he decided to do a more mature take on Spider-Man, bring on new villains and new love interests (Catwoman, I mean, Black Kat, anyone?) I'd be down for that too. But if he does go this route I'd encourage him to take a few years off to do other things and give the character a rest. Then come back as a fully realized Spider-Man.

About as convincing as when Chris Nolan said he had no plans on making a third Batman movie after TDK.

I hope we get another trilogy with TH as a more comic accurate Spidey.

But would love another movie with Garfield in the role. Since we know Sony will probably want to do something with Spider-Gwen, how about something like this as a TASM sequel:

Harry Osborn hires the Jackal to clone Spider-Man in order to finally rid himself of his decease which has gotten way worse the last ten years.

Jackal is successful in getting a DNA sample and discovers that Peter's blood is just what he needed to create viable clones.

Being a former co-worker of Gwen's at Oscorp, Jackal was obsessed with her and bkames Spidey for her death. He soon decides to clone her instead. He is successful but a side effect is that the new Gwen has shares Spider-Man's powers.

Meanwhile, aunt May keeps pushing Peter to meet her friend's niece Mary Jane. He agrees and is left completely speechless when she shows up.

Jackal manipulates the new Gwen into screwing with Peter's mind just as he was finally starting to move on and feel good about himself.

Harry deteriorates resulting in his skin turning green. He breaks out of Ravencroft and goes to Oscorp to get his gear.

In the end, Peter and the new Gwen has to work together to take down the Goblin (in a more comic book accurate costume). Jackal sacrifices himself to save Gwen. Afterwards, she leaves the city (setting up her spinoff) and Peter has his second official date with Mary Jane.
