SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME Star Tom Holland Responds To Oscar Buzz And The Reaction From Fans In Theaters

Sony Pictures is pushing Spider-Man: No Way Home for a "Best Picture" nomination at this year's Oscars, and Tom Holland has now weighed in by saying "that's not how we like to validate ourselves."

Spider-Man: No Way Home has received widespread critical acclaim from fans and critics alike, and in recent weeks, the threequel has been generating a lot of Oscar buzz. Given the response to the movie, there's really no reason to believe it doesn't deserve a "Best Picture" nod, though the nature of the Academy arguably makes that unlikely.

Stranger things have happened, of course, and Black Panther earned that accolade even if it didn't ultimately win (despite being vastly better than Green Book).

Doing the rounds to promote Uncharted, Tom Holland was asked by Kevin McCarthy for his thoughts on Spider-Man: No Way Home's Oscar chances. "You know, we're all incredibly proud of the film. It would obviously be a huge honour if it was nominated for an Oscar, but I think that's not how we like to validate ourselves," the actor explained. "We like to validate ourselves with the love we receive from the general public and, so far, that has been through the roof. So, for me, with this film and this character, I've already achieved everything I would like to."

Holland would go on to say that the fan response to the movie has moved him in ways he never anticipated. "You see these fan reactions of people seeing Andrew come through that portal and I've never seen anything like that in a theater before. I've never seen that kind of audience reaction and to be a part of that was so emotional. I can't watch those videos without getting really, really emotional. At the premiere, I was in floods of tears at the end of that movie."

"It was a combination how proud I am of the movie, how great the movie was, how emotional I was about the end of this chapter and what we'd all achieved," he added. "Whether it is an Oscar movie or not, it has no bearing on me. It would be amazing if it is, but if it's not, I'm so proud of what Jon Watts has achieved."

If we're being real here for a moment, Holland probably realises that Spider-Man: No Way Home only has a very slim chance of breaking into that "Best Picture" category, so tempering expectations is no doubt the best way to go. It would be a real shame if the movie is overlooked, but the actor makes a lot of valid points about how there are more important ways to be recognised.

With ratings for the Academy Awards continuing to plummet, nominating the Sony Pictures/Marvel Studios threequel would be a smart way to drive up interest in the show. A win, meanwhile, would prove that the Oscars can acknowledge more than mostly unseen, niche movies.

Spider-Man: No Way Home is now playing in theaters.

A few forced claps when you get an Oscar vs. the general audience going wild. I get the sentiment that he's much prouder of the second

Saying you've never seen people go crazy like that over somebody coming out of a portal is some next level lying. Can't knock the hustle tho

@TheManWithoutFear - Really? I think considering his success, he's extremely humble. And doesn't give off fake humble vibes either.

He's a breath of fresh air in today's world of celebrities who stroke their own ego.

Now let's say 4 or 5 years from now, will he get dumb cocky? Who knows

@dragon316 - Chadwick died in 2020 not 2018 when Black Panther came out, so your point doesn't make sense. Then again, nothing you say does.

@dragon316 - The Academy is absolutely biased against genre films, but that's not the reason that superhero movies are rarely nominated. I can count on one hand the ones that were worth a nom. Box office has nothing to do with it.

It's not hard to please the "fans".

In other words: the academy said no.

And just FYI, I hate the Oscar's for its corporate bs. I feel that blockbusters and comic book movies shouldn't be exempt from awards like best picture. And I loved no way home. But marvel really bit off more than they could chew with the Oscar push. It was a fun time and a cool nostalgia trip. Not much more. And it didn't need to be.

Some movies can just be fun movies guys.

If the academy feels like it’s deserving, it’ll get a nod if not the movie has done a lot already. I’m sure everyone involved will be happy and all the movie snubs will be happy a “popcorn” movie isn’t taken up one of its precious noms.

I was on Reddit reading about when they were talking about this not being deserving and I really hate reading movie snubs take. They really act like they’re better than other people. Shits weird.

Anyway, I enjoyed the movie and that’s really all that counts to me. I never legit never tuned into the oscars anyways

Let’s say it does get Oscar buzz. That will give it even longer legs.

I don't get the obsession with the Oscars still, especially after they lost a lot of standing.

I agree with him - these sorts of movies don't need validation from the Oscar's.

This film is a bit of an exception though, not that it needs any sort of validation, but its been such a stand out from every other film this year and it honestly would be a bit strange if it wasn't recognized with a best picture nomination. How can a film be this well recieved, this financially beneficial for struggling theaters, this much of a stand out during a global pandemic not be recognized? The fact that it's even a debate goes to show how out of touch and irrelevant the Oscar's are.

I loved the movie. I love Tom. But no part of this is Oscar-worthy. Maybe Tom and Dafoe's performances, but not stacked up against a very crowded field this year.

These movies are great fun and bring a community together, but 9 times out of 10 they aren't exactly artistically ambitious. They aren't Oscar-material. And that's okay. I wish we could accept that instead of writing embarrassing **** like this:

"With ratings for the Academy Awards continuing to plummet, nominating the Sony Pictures/Marvel Studios threequel would be a smart way to drive up interest in the show. A win, meanwhile, would prove that the Oscars can acknowledge more than mostly unseen, niche movies."

Arguing that the Academy should lower its standards for ratings and throwing shade at more artistically prestigious films is exactly the stuff that causes people like Scorsese to look down on fans, when we could instead be pushing the studios to make more CBMs that ARE Oscar-worthy.
