There's no beating Spider-Man: No Way Home and with a $27.8 million Wednesday, and the web-slinger managed to fend off competition from new releases like The Matrix Resurrections, The King's Man, and Sing 2. The latter nabbed second place with $8 million, while the latest instalment of The Matrix franchise was in third place with a disappointing $6.4 million.
Had the movie not been made available to HBO Max subscribers at no extra charge, this could be a totally different story, but there's no chance it would have ever rivalled the latest Spider-Man movie.
This is evident from overseas takings; opening in 49 additional markets yesterday after initially debuting in 4, its opening day was a disappointing $6.6 million for a current international total of $18.9 million. It is too soon to call The Matrix Resurrections a flop? No. In additional bad news, a dismal B- CinemaScore shows that moviegoers aren't too happy with what they saw, either, meaning word of mouth is not going to be good heading into the holiday weekend. The Matrix received an A-.
Here's what we said in our latest review: "A wholly unnecessary epilogue to The Matrix trilogy, Resurrections retreads old ground, delivers mediocre action, and proves itself a tough pill to swallow despite a decent enough love story that, alone, isn't enough to justify revisiting this franchise. Time for a reboot."
The good news keeps on coming for Spider-Man: No Way Home, which has now racked up $813.9 million at the global box office, with $457.4 million overseas and $356.5 million in North America. $1 billion is right around the corner, and this character is now one of the MCU's biggest draws like Iron Man before him.
